They are bitching about L4D 2...

Apparently, some people are upset about Valve's plan for L4D2 and prepaid to boycott the game.
http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/06/08/left-4-dead-2-sparks-consumer-protest

Here's the list of complaints:

* Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
* Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
* The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
* The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
* The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
* L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic
* The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
* L4D2’s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
* The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

Seriously, "L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic "
What the hell? Are they saying fighting zombies during daylight is unfun?
I'm not much of a L4D player. The game does have some interesting AI director but it's going downhill quickly due to lack of maps and mod. support.

Half the things they mention are what have me enthused for the new game (I love the daylight scenes) and the other half are not that huge a deal. People on the net like to complain though, that is the way it always is.

I want to kill stuff on daylight too. But beside this, I agree that L4D2 comes pretty fast. At the moment I think that I will not buy this game.

Oh fuck off, L4D1 had a great style but this one looks just as good and just as stylish. I liked how in L4D1 the whole game was fought in the dark and at the end of the last chapter it faded to morning at the end of the game.

As for "Unnapealing characters" No, just no.

these protesters need to get a life and stop being whiny little bitches, the list seems half assed, written by a bunch of 12 year old Valve fan boys, besides after they released the trailer for Left 4 Dead 2, Valve said there is still L4D1 DLC in the works.

and no one is asking you to buy it, stop trying to fuck it up for the rest of us.

Some of those complaints are incredibly retarded, but I do sympathize with them considering the fact that the support promised for Left 4 Dead was entirely forgotten and what did come was incredibly underwhelming.

I don't support developers exploiting their fans further when they've made empty promises that they never delivered upon, it's almost like they're saying "Listen, we treated our consumer base like shit, now buy our fucking sequel that we're pumping out right away to get some more money in our pocket because fixes and additional content doesn't do shit for our wallets."

Nobody at Valve said they're dropping L4D. Everyone who says they will apparently doesn't know Valve.

I understand that, but they still haven't shown any real support, things that were promised quickly have been trickling out at a ridiculously slow rate.

Being untimely isn't a virtue, and saying you'll "eventually get it out" isn't an excuse.

I am not 100% sure but this reads like you a referring to my post. If this is true, I wonder why you are so agressive. I only said that I will not buy it in my actual state of mood (and it is even not possible to buy it yet). So- what's the problem?

They already dropped it, pretty much. Post-release support is nothing like what they've talked about. And Turtle Rock is not exactly Valve, made apparent by Gabe Newell commenting on how L4D2 "goes against the character of the company".

oh no, that wasn't directed at anyone here, just the boycott idiots, I'm just tired of these people thinking that they have to buy it, its pretty easy not to.

From what I have gathered, L4D2 uses all of the resources in L4D and adds more so I see little point in providing any support beyond bug fixes for L4D.

What's wrong with boycotts? L4D2 sounds like it should be an expansion rather than a sequel, especially if it's being pumped out in a year, and it is likely that much of what was promised and not delivered for L4D will not be prioritized if made at all. Valve tends to be pretty good with post release support, usually with balancing and finishing the game by adding more content (TF2 is an example of both) though I have to say that it's the only Valve product that I can think of that did that... CS and DoD were both originally mods and had almost all of the new content added while they were mods.

L4D2 is going to be the first valve game I'm not going to purchase.

I had followed the original since the first few tidbits of information trickled out, and the final product was incredibly disappointing. The campaign has almost no replay value, and the director is a joke. They promised more content, and what they delivered is a gamemode that feels like it was slapped together in fifteen minutes.

The only part of the game that is actually enjoyable is versus mode, and that's only if you can manage to grab 7 other friends since almost every public match is going to end two minutes in with one team quitting.

It's even more insulting when you take note of how long valve takes to develop games... and then look at the state L4D2 is in. It's painfully obvious what they were doing instead of creating the DLC that was promised. The 49.99 price tag on L4D was a joke too.

Is the protest going to accomplish something? Of course not. Doesn't hurt to bring light to a company pulling the old bait and switch on loyal fans though.

Uh...

Isn't the release window of L4D2 to L4D identical to that of Fallout 2 to Fallout or GTA:Vice City to GTA:III?

I'm not sure I get why this is a problem.

Valve is like Blizzard. Fortunate circumstances allow them to endless delay games without publishers pulling funding so now fans associate delays with the quality of the product. No delays obviously mean they are selling out.

Or that they planned more efficiently this time.

Seriously, yes it is a reskin on the same engine. Many quality sequels (including the two I mentioned) have done exactly the same.

So what's the complaint then? They're not giving free stuff for L4D? Gasp. Horrifying.

Not giving the additional content that was promised to make the game worth the price tag? Gasp. Horrifying.

L4D simply wasn't a $50 game. Valve promised additional content (opening up the two other maps to competitive hardly counts as additional content, it's more completing the game) and they haven't really delivered. I don't think anyone would really have a problem if L4D2 was actually a $20 DLC expansion, but it's being touted as a whole new game; where the majority of changes are cosmetic.

Remember L4D is a multiplayer game. If you release a sequel so quickly for an MP game, you decimate the modding and competitive communities, which have only just started to attain any sort of strength. Hell, a proper ladder system for competitive L4D in Australia only started like a month ago.

Quake 2 - 1997

Unreal - 1998
Unreal Tournament - 1999

Unreal Tournament 2003 - 2002
Unreal Tournament 2004 - 2004(18 months)

Call of duty - One per year since Call of Duty 2 in 2005.

Multiplayer games get quick sequels all the time.

Quake 1 + 2 - Pre Mainstream Internet gaming Era

Unreal + Unreal Tournament - Unreal was primarily a singleplayer game.

UT 03/04 - From Wikipedia
The game features all or most of the content of its predecessor, replacing it on the shop shelves. Unreal Tournament 2004 boxes sold in the United States include a $10 mail-in rebate requiring that a short form be completed and sent to the publisher along with a copy of the manual cover for Unreal Tournament 2003. Versions sold in the United Kingdom had a similar offer, but required sending in the play CD for Unreal Tournament 2003 instead.

Call of Duty - Fuck, primarily single player games as well.

Most of what you've mentioned are single player games with multiplayer elements. L4D is a multiplayer game with singleplayer elements (playing with bots).

EDIT: I noticed you added Doom1 + 2... Dude, wtf?

Honestly given the fact that valve takes years to put stuff out, I dont mind paying a little and getting everything one year after the first release, especially with some core changes.
