They are bitching about L4D 2...

All of them had big multiplayer communities that had modding and competitive parts. You can't dismiss them because they have single player campaigns(some of them).

So way smaller community that had a far greater upheaval when the sequal got released.

Unreal + Unreal Tournament - Unreal was primarily a singleplayer game.

Still had multiplayer and modding tools that were used and got completely decimated when Tournment came out.

UT 03/04 - From Wikipedia

Save $10 from a new release that has less new content then L4D2 has.

Call of Duty - Fuck, primarily single player games as well.

I played Call of Duty 4 multiplayer for over 24 hours. I'm ranked around 4 million on the xbox leaderboard.

I noticed you added Doom1 + 2... Dude, wtf?

The big start of deathmatch and mods and yet a sequal gets released a year later.

Just take a look at Team Fortress 2 and how the game is completely different now from what it was with the vanilla release.

Now imagine if the exact same additional content and support + different skins for the characters had been called Team Fortress 3...

Doesn't sound so good right ?

Because let's face it, L4D 2 is but a DLC. Did you read the list of additional features ? Most new weapons are re-skinned weapons. The new infected was designed by a steampowered forum member. There are no new game modes...

The only really valuable content is the set of new campaigns.
Now I don't say that Valve should have given this content for free. I would have been more than happy to buy it as a DLC ( 19 dollars max ). But to claim that it is a sequel is just laughable...

And yes, Unreal 2003 was a beta version of Unreal 2004...Wonder how many people still played it a few months after 2004 was released...

Unreal Tournament 2004 - 2004(18 months)

Call of duty - One per year since Call of Duty 2 in 2005.

Multiplayer games get quick sequels all the time.

Stop quoting dates. Those games and their predecessors didn't suffer from a developer who promised content to improve the existing game but never delivered.

you do know Valve recently said there is still Left 4 Dead DLC on the way, just because there is going to be a new game doesn't mean that L4D1 is dead.
That wouldn't be their first broken promise, y'know. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
If they'll continue to not-deliver DLC at the same rate as they've been doing so far, that's not too likely to be of any significance. Months to patch bugs, half a year to add in a single new level with the survival game mode. And it's not as if extra L4D1 content is going to make the game any less obsolete when the sequel rolls out, given that L4D2 is going to be able to run content made for the previous game.

Oh it's dead.

There's no way they're going to deliver the content that they promised, since it just doesn't fit with their business model.

For TF2, with each major content update comes a free weekend and a sale to draw in new players.

Each update generates a huge spike in sales.

People aren't going to be buying L4D with L4D2 coming out, so what's the incentive to create new content for it? There isn't one.

They're following microsoft's vista to windows 7 model.

-Generate massive hype.
-Release an unfinished/shallow product.
-Promise to update said product in the future.
-Allow a year or so to pass.
-Announce a *new* product, which is essentially the last one with all of the features that were originally promised.
-Sell said new product which is nothing more than a glorified expansion pack for full retail.

Umm, you know Left 4 Dead 2 isn't out yet right? there are about 5 months left until the release, more then enough time to release DLC.

but thx for teh info, you must be in teh biz.

Again, "teh" updates are there to generate revenue.

At this point they're hyping up L4D2 as a "bigger and better" product, which is obviously going to turn people off from buying the original... which means there is no incentive to update the old game, despite previous promises.

They may release the SDK, if only to say "Hey, we gave you *SOMETHING*, so quit bitching".

you forget that Valve is a COMPANY, they don't run on sunshine and farts, they need money to keep the company going, a lot of people forgot that when Valve started releasing free stuff.

and its been stated, in the last few days that they are still developing L4D DLC, these "protesters" heard Left 4 Dead 2 and nothing else.

still these idiots make me laugh, I mean its a fucking video game, get over it.

Man 1: I'm on a peace keeping mission in Africa, we are healing and giving these people hope, what are you doing?
Man 2: I'm protesting Left 4 Dead 2.

Well, this is exactly what "the other" told us about Fallout 3 and all teh rant.

In general, this all reminds me on all the Fallout 3 regarding stuff we got here and on other places in the internet. But this is the other side now.

I mean the people and their "rage" and not the developers. See my quote from UnidentifiedFlyingTard above as example. It's 100% the same - it's just a game, why you care about it? Get over, god damn! The game will be great!

This is not meaned to be a insult, it's just what I see.

The difference being, the bitching about L4D2 is not about the game itself, but the fact it exists. Our bitching is usually about the content of the game, not the fact that it exists.

Calm down dude, it's not as if we are planning to sabotage the steam servers, to bomb Valve's offices or to cut Gabe Newell's balls à la Tyler Durden...

Some of us are just planning not to buy it. Pretty big deal eh ?

I WILL buy it ( unless I decide that it sucks, just like I did for Bioshock 2, which I won't buy ). But certainly not 50 dollars...
I will patiently wait for a sales weekend, just like I did for L4D 1.

It's easy to do that, isn't it? Developers certainly love doing it. Shovelling all complaints into one whine-o pile, effectively forcing people to admit all complaints are valid or none.

But that doesn't make any sense. Complaints are valid when they're logical, it doesn't matter one whit how fanboyish or angry the consumers are if their complaints are logical.

It actually sounds like me like some of the points on L4D2 are pretty valid complaints, but it kind of depends on how many changes L4D2 has vs L4D and how they handle the multiplayer transition, neither of which we've not seen as much of as people like to claim.

The only thing that amuses me in a glittering gem v fanboy way here is how the intense love for a company can so easily turn to intense hate because the fans have built unrealistic expectations. Oh well.

that made me laugh, I'm waiting for that group, mostly I want to see how over the top this whole "situation" gets.

I probably wont get the game right away either, I will wait until Christmas

I don't like this whole L4D2 situation because it seems to me like Valve could just keep improving L4D for a long time. Really, look at TF2. Updated for many months now. No signs of TF3 being in the production.
