Thoughts on the Borderlands franchise?

Mad Man with a Mad Plan
I recently bought the Borderlands games and have been having a lot of fun, so I was curious as to what you guys think of the franchise.

What do you think of it in general? Is Borderlands better than Borderlands 2 or vice versa? What do you want in Borderlands 3? Just say whatever comes to mind.

The games themselves are just "meh". I like them well enough, I suppose but there's lots of potential for an actual rpg series there. And if nothing else there's potential for an interesting expanded universe.

Fun shoot n looter.
But the first one pales in comparison to the 2nd one.
Hell, it almost feels like the first one is just a prototype for the 2nd one.

They ought to continue with the kind of storytelling that the sequel had but the gameplay needs a bit of improvement when it comes to damage sponges and shit.

I also think the game needs more variety. Gameplay focused games are only as fun as the game mechanics are fun to dick around with and the moment they become tedious you can pretty much predict how the rest of the game is going to turn out. Different types of gangs with their own strategies, weapon favorites and camp designs.

They also need to add more variety to the RNG of weapons. Again, it's a gameplay focused game. If there's nothing new in it then why bother playing it?

And finally I do think that they should go all the way and finally do a proper open sandbox map. They could always have some sort of blockade to prevent the player from exploring all of the map at once when they start a game and they could always still have dungeons and shit that take place in their own worldspaces. But this semi-open world design doesn't sit well with me. Vehicles are a necessity to get to places in a timely manner but it's annoying to drive around with all of the nooks and crannies and twists and turns that are drivable sections.

I haven't played Telltale's game or the Pre-Sequel but the first two games are pretty damn fun, however, a sequel to them needs to build on what they have. Unless I see some big improvements in these areas I don't think I want to play what will essentially just be a reiteration of what I already have.

I'm not a fan of cell shading either, but graphics I don't care about unless they are Dwarf Fortress low quality.

I play for story, and thus for me, Borderlands is a non-starter. Borderlands 2 however is AWESOME. Tales from the Borderlands is closer to an RPG, but it it's really not. But it has more wit and charm than Borderlands 2, which is actually saying something. Not played Pre-sequel, and not going to unless there's a way to create bots for all the other playable characters.

I played Borderlands 2 for like 20 minutes. Stopped playing it. Don't really know why.

I can't play Borderlands by myself, I get bored really fast (also I suck at FPS), but if I play with mates I usually have some fun.

Borderlands.

A billion guns which all look the same, act the same and take 1000 bullets to kill a basic enemy.

A handful of broken guns which break the game, but take 1000 replays of the same save killing the same boss to acquire.

A handful of enemies with minor changes and nothing more than new names and stupidly scaled HP.

A handful of characters, some broken, some underpowered to the point of uselessness, all of which have a handful of viable builds and viable weapons.

Humour which only works for the first hour, then becomes stale.

Plots which make no sense and are full of holes (Why is the ENEMY of you reviving you? They OWN the revive stations...)

Hey are okay... but there's a billion other games I'd rather play.

In any case, I'm a huge fan of the second game, didn't at all like the first game, and was tepid about the third.

Tales from the Borderlands is one of the funniest games I've ever played in my life, though.

Everyone should play that.

See, as always, I'm on the contrary. While BL2 is fine the first couple of times, NG++ onward it's all about the meta and breaking the game to even be able to handle oneself. All weapons are shit unless you do X, period. All the classes are differentiated by having worse stats. Otherwise all weapons in the class are. But I know you are talking about the humour and the story. The "humour" and the "story", I say. The third time it's not so funny. Out of Mr Torgue, Krieg and some other loose line, BL2 is all about memes and references.

In the other hand, the first one (and The Pre-Sequel at an extent) had a story that didn't consist in you being a superhero. It made sense. The atmosphere was spot on, and weapons, even the randomized ones felt very different from one another. Burst long range SMGs, LMGs that can hit something, revolvers that range from McCree's and a hand cannon, shotguns ala Dinner Bell. My favourite was a Hyperion SMG (HK42?) that could reliably hit afar, and had such fire rate that it provoked me a headache when getting trigger happy. Also, guns lasted more than a single level. A Bloody Justice carried me 20 levels since I got it.
It feels like a space Fallout with sparse shows of high-tech cyberpunk style elements.
My only real complaint with it is no toggleable FoV, terrible UI (not fixed for 2, just more PC friendly), underwhelming final boss and a bit tubby on the gritty side of things.

The only real thing I liked from 2 was Tiny Tina's Raid on Dragon Keep. That one's great (and of course bloody needed for high levels)

And *every Borderlands fan. Don't overstate it.

Nope. ;D
Just agreeing.
Oh derp, I got it now. Anyway, the jokes there felt a bit more deserved. Like shocking Claptrap with a taser-y thing after beating the whole DLC where he sent some of the toughest enemies after you and being robo communist. Or the zombie DLC being a nod to the older House of The Dead instead of just Halloween. And helping some guy "do justice" and clean a town of baddies and his brother, to come back later and finding him having made the place even harder.

They took the worst parts of MMOs, cut the player count down to four and threw on some really shitty shooting. Me and my ex put about 35 hours into the first game. The bullshit you endure for love...
