Tumblr users drive girl to suicide attempt

Speaking as someone born in the faraway universe known as the 70s, I have a hard time fathoming all this cyber pathos and social media nonsense (wtf is with catfishing?). I'm sure social media just facilitates, accelerates and exacerbates what's always been there deep down in human nature, but goddamn.

It isn’t just a show for kids, it’s a testament to what a modern family can look like....
Oh good grief. Where do we go with this? Ninja turtles raises awareness about reptilian discrimination? Ren and Stimpy - domestic violence in same-sex unions! GI Joe indoctrinates kids with facist dogma (Cobra were the inevitable response to US's imperialist transgressions!). and on and on...
I watched SU once with my kids, gimmie a break will ya?

Not to mention that the location isn't the problem, but the behavior of others.
Censorship and social engineering here we come!

What baffles me the most is a bit thick political correctness on sites dedicated solely to 18+ rated video games, where all the registered members are supposed to be folks who've played those games. How can be someone 18+ years old and dealing with mature content in their games on a daily basis overly sensitive to some harsh word or a little edgy opinion?

Because none of this is about "sensitivity" to mature content. It is not about being shocked by content, but about the realization that every bit of content reflects and reproduces societal norms. And some of those norms reflect harmful power relations like racism and sexism.

That's why my very first exposure to Metzger's harmful opinions was so great! BIS guys surely have caught the very essence of human nature in good and bad sense, which makes their games so good. It gave me feeling that I'm walking the streets of my hometown.

Back on topic tho - verbal bullying or cyber bullying is really nasty thing which cannot be tolerated.

Well said. No one would ever seriously argue that there are not worse things that can happen. But that still doesn't mean that it has to be tolerated. As a normal human beeing you would not tolerate bullying either if it happend to you or someone you knew in real life. So why feeling that it's a non issue just because it happens online.

Anonymity is only a tiny part of it. The grossest shit is said with incredible regularity in Facebook comment threads -- where people use their real names.

It's easier to say something mean on the internet regardless but I get your point.

There really is no solution for shitty behavior I think, though I can reiterate what I think is a need for most people who are affected emotionally by internet happenings, to step away from the computer when such a thing comes up.
The internet is a central part of people's personal and professional lives. You can't "step away from the computer" any more than you can just not go out on the street because of harassment. Not to mention that the location isn't the problem, but the behavior of others.

I said that in the next sentence. But when people on tumblr are making communities purely for hating on you, maybe you shouldn't go on tumblr anymore, at the least.

I don't get why you're so obsessed with finding fault with a victim for just living her life, honestly. What you're saying is "don't do this thing you really like to do because other people are assholes."

These people have mental issues. Tell them to stop thinking deluded thoughts and acting on compulsive tendencies and see how it works.

I propose that we make an entire subforum for akratus and sander and anyone who feel that they agree strongly with either of them.
Let's call it the thunderdome!
Also, let's keep it there and not in the website subforum! That would be great.

I don't agree strongly with either side, I agree that sexism is a huge problem and that fiction and games could use more variety in characterization, not just on female character, also on settings and philosophical observation instead of safe americentric shlock, at the same time I don't believe games or books promote sexism any more than they promote violence. Sexism in fiction is a REFLECTION of society, not the other way around. I also realize that the narrative of the discussion is pretty skewed by both sides (altho the most "moralist" one is the one that skewes it the most) so that both sides just have to fight made up strawmen evil monsters because they think they just can't give credit to the opposing view at all as most of them come from a country with a very strong Bipartidist view on every aspect of life.

Also as a creative I despise the very idea of censorship, even with things I find offensive, I also despise white washing and cultural appropiation and mob rushes and witch hunts of any kind but I have no patience for people being obviously ignorant when talking about topics they obviously know shit about.

So true. I've googled Fallout 4 ESRB rating just out of curiosity and to my biggest surprise there's not any sexual content warning anymore. It looks like Fallout, the game dealing with forced prostitution, rape, and many other disgusting parts of human society, has taken a safe way in the upcoming part and has left this questionable content for good. Censorship wouldn't make any society better, it just create false and unbelievable picture in your product.

That means "Support News" won't get us into Piper's pants?
Damn.

I find it strange that people think it's only authoritarian leftists on Tumblr when there's a VERY large neo-nazi community on there, as well as your typical monarchists, libertarians, anarchists etc

It's because the authoritarian leftits are the loudest and most hilarious of them.

One line is now an obsession, which I immediately counter with a counter thought straight after. It is obvious you are the one with an obsession. Just a little one though. I wouldn't want to be so needlessly accusatory.

I believe that's the reason social justice adherrants have to try to change society.

Still as horrorible as this is, I don't see what this has to do with the topic ...

Nothing, it just hit me, that internet "violence" is a somehow a worthwhile problem in the face of people getting their heads bashed in for being raped in other parts of the world. I think schools should have some sort of a program for this kind of issue, as a confused mind somehow finds a reason for suicide in the most comfortable of existences.

FINALLY, SOMEONE THAT SEES!

Truth is, the people in the middle east suffer far worse. One of the reasons I have never gone to suicide even in depression, I just reflect on my life and how lucky I am, also reflecting on other peoples lives.
