Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines

You have to slash them in chronological order, look at the four paintings and figure out the sequence of events. If you mess up the order, there will be a red vortex, and all the paintings will "heal."

In case you are not familiar with your White Wolf mythology, Lilith was also cast out by God. That should help you figure it out.

After all, there are only four paintings. You could figure out the order by trial and error.

I got it right after I posted that.

Any way to get the sisters to....kiss and make up? That whole incest thing is.....weird.

Not that i know of. But you can bang Jeanette if she survives

The Hollywood warrens are now officially the most fucking annoying dungeon EVER. My non-combat malkavian got his undead ass handed to him lots of times before i gave up and invested a lot in Melee.
Then i realized how damn great the Malk looks with a red biohazard overalls complete with yellow rubber boots, gloves and a sledgehammer

SPOILER

yes. That's all I'm saying.
</spoiler>

Just wait until you meet Caine, Sander.
If Caine really appears, I'm going to kill you for ruining this surprise. SPOILER tags exist for a reason.

This entire thread has been spoilers for a while now, someone should put that in the title really.

Anyway, I was just kidding around with you Sander. I doubt I'm farther in the game than you, I haven't met Caine.... or at least I didn't know it!

Really, I think it's pretty likely that you will meet Caine during the course of the game, it would be a very hard opportunity for Troika to pass up. Saying that, I would bet that they do it true to White Wolf form, it wouldn't be obvious who you were speaking with, just someone you meet casually.

Speculation though, my dear Sander, based on far too much Vampire: The Masquarde literature.

Damn, this game is fucking awsome.

Is anyone playing a female characther ? Im doing a runthru as a prusuasive female from that socilate clan (cant be arsed to remember right now).

SPOILERS

The beachhouse where you recover the explosives, you can sweet talk your way past the first guard. Dunno past there since I decided to triger a fight and just drain em all.

SPOILER

Probably not. There's only one place left for me where he could be, and possibly, he's in there. But really, you wouldn't encounter him if you wouldn't want to, and you'd be pretty damned moronic if you'd really want to (or have a save game right before it), seeing as how you constantly get warnings about that thing.
However, I can't find out yet, because I can't get past the first end-boss. Dammit!

PsychoSniper: Persuasion will get you into many places and will allow you to do many interesting things.

basically i've played for about 30 hours now with two different characters (a Gangrel & a Tremere) & it is a fact that the game lends you less freedom than you suspect on the first runthrough. the story makes up for a lot btw.

in my opinion sneaking, lockpicking & hacking have been the most useful skills up til now. but thats just a matter of taste.

oooooooooooooh, i so love the special stealth death animations with their custom musical chords...

i haven't tried the guns yet though. well, expect to shoot at certain stuff & not people (no, i won't tell you at what ;) )

PS: did anyone get a laugh out of the 'the way it's meant to be played'-Nvidia logo at the startup of a Source engine based game? lol

PPS: [mild spoiler] the reason why i restarted with another clan is because i can't get past GB (well i can, but the game always crashed after taking the zodiac). damn fucking warez...
but no worries, in 5 days it will FINALLY be officially released in belgium so i'll have the official version then. 8)

This game is now officially elevated from "pretty good" to "damn good"
Only thing that i can really gripe about are the god-awful loading times.
*enter building*
*Wait 2 minutes*
*exit*
*wait 5 minutes*
Argh! Teh ADHD!

no such problems over here, loads within 20 seconds tops (and i don't have an uber top of the line system either). although the original bootup of the game does take a while usually...

The game suffers from the same stuttering problem many have with HL2, because of some sound chips issue, and there are other minor bugs, Leon is asking for people to report them here.

yeah, sometimes my Audigy seems to screw up a bit... i disabled high qual sound & it runs just peachy.

non-combat malkavian? LOL, what an idea!

btw, most dungeons can simply be run through without killing anything (yes, even the warrens)

Well, a Malk has ... interesting seduction&persuasion lines.
And the funny wiggly font at the subtitles.
And he can have arguments with the scenery

Just finished the game... Great ending, but the "end boss" sucked great big floppy donkey dick.

MAJOR SPOILERS UP AHEAD

Finished it. A bit dissappointing, though, I must say. The choices you make throughout the game have little influence on the eventual outcome of the game (I could've smooched up to the Prince, or the Anarchs, it would've made no difference), you can only side with people at the very end, and even then it seems to make little difference. From what I've been able to discern, I could've sided with anyone without it making a difference at the end. There is no information whatsoever on the places you've been and what happens to them. Cain apparently does exist and appears, which was actually a nice touch, and the ending in itself is quite decent, but the fact that your choices have zero influence just pisses me off. I was expecting a bit more...choice cand consequence. Also, for some reasons, I had to fight endbosses. Twice. Bah. Arcade-style ending fights.
Meh, still a good game, though, but they could've done much better with the endings.

I just ordered it.

Can you like buy clothes and customize ur vamp the way you like or are you stuck with a certain set of skins?

bummer Sander... a pitty, but i kinda expected as much.

i had my first conversation with a chick that didnt have speech btw. kinda in depth talk with loads of details & skill reqs so i think only 1 in hundred gamers will ever go so far in the dialog. can't really blame em for not making a soundrecording of that particular part of the conv.

your look is defined by:

1) male/female: (duh)
2) clan: a male gangrel will be a rasta-m0n with a basketball T while a Tremere will be a supposedly savvy guy with a shirt.
3) clothes/armor: light clothing, heavy clothing, light leather, heavy leather,...

This post from Leon Boyarsky is quite interesting, opening his soul to the world like that doesn`t happen often:
Maybe he liked the combat. I can't vouch for the writing quality, but this review is closest to how I feel about the game. I love the combat (especially the disciplines combined with melee), but my concern has always been that players would find the main story line too linear. Don't get me wrong, I like the way the main storyline unfolds, it's just that in Arcanum, for example, we had backup/alternate quests up the ass (that's a technical phrase), and we have alot less of that in Vampire.

I'm just glad that most people seem to be enjoying the game.

leon

He`s talking about this review

I`m going to get the game, i`m finally convinced. Next month though, too many stuff to do right now.

Its somewhat linear, but still a good play so far for me.

I also had the sound stutter mentioned above, disabling hiquality sound fixed it.

That's probably caused by mp3s not having been copied. Try running console mode and checking the messages, it probably says "couldn't find file *.mp3", I've had that with several combat sounds. An odd bug.

i dont have a save at that point anymore & i doubt i'll get there anytime soon with a high speechskill char...

Would any of you know where I can buy some new clothes or armor? I'm already up to Hollywood, and I hear new armor can be purchased in each zone, but I can't find the seller anywhere Downtown or in Hollywood.

Also, I'm on the Santa Monica quest to find the Asian vampire, I'm supposed to check the morgue, but I have no idea where it is in the hospital or how to get in.

Aside from some annoying glitches, it's a great game.

Thanks,
Radial

[Disclaimer] Having most recently finished HL2, I might be spoiled in certain areas, so my criticism might not be entirely sound [/disclaimer]

I have also played the game for a couple hours now. I'm afraid I cannot share the widespread enthusiasm I see here. Actually, I'm quite disappointed. Granted, the combination of Source, Vampire and Troika gave me high hopes in advance, too high, as it seems, now.

Sander said:
So, I just played it for a couple of hours, and I have but one thing to say: great.

Troika has done it, they've created a game that is great roleplaying-wise, but is at the same time beautifully done in a 3D world, with a good combat system. Everything feels fluid and looks great. The atmosphere of the game is dark, gritty, and darkly humorous at times.

"Great roleplaying-wise"? Frankly, playing Bloodlines, I feel like wearing a straightjacket. Hardly any character customization (you can only more or less choose from a bunch of pre-made characters. no visual customization at all aside from clan and gender choice - a must in a strongly visual game such as this), super-small, non-interactive game world, laughable inventory, NPCs you cannot interact with, other NPCs forcing you into dialogues where no answer even closely fits the character I would like to play.
Damnit, I felt less restricted when I played the linear fps that is HL2! (I know this isn't true, but it felt that way to me)

"beautifully done 3d world"? Err, what? I could agree on "great variety of individual NPC skins and models", but beyond that, where's the beauty? Agreed, I have not seen all locations, yet, but one should expect the first ones to be dones especially carfully. But what I've seen so far are thoroughly sterile level with empty rooms, textures of mixed quality, very odd animation and really bad cut scenes.
And no, I'm no big graphics junkie - I thought Wiz8 was looking great when it came out, and I think Fallout looks good even by today's standards. The problem here is different. You see, a game can only look as good as its engine allows it to. That's fine, as long as everything fits together well. However, a game can look much worse than it's engine allows it to. That's a sin - moreso if the result looks incomplete. Quite obviously, Troika either didn't have the artistic talent or wasn't afforded the time/resources needed to polish this game as much as the engine evidently would allow. If they had realized that early on, they might have adapted to that, for example by adapting a more distant 3rd person camera (isometric-style) that would hid many of the flaws I mentioned and at the same time allow for more (low-poly) objects to fill the world with. Apparently, they didn't, or couldn't.

"good combat system"? C'mon, it's twitch action - I wouldn't call that a 'combat system' any more than the player-game world interaction in Pac Man. AI is ridiculous. Sure, it's fun most of the time, but and there might even be some tactical depth (when do I use my disciplines? close combat or ranged? oh, I forget that ranged is pretty useless), but not much. Still, no problem for me if there wasn't my next gripe.

"everything feels fluid"? Such as? Certainly not the animations, which look twisted and choppy. Combat? Well, kind of, until you try to do some melee combos (yes, combos) against multiple enemies. The interface? Equipping/inventory managment is a pain, and may I mention the dialogue in xbox-friendly(tm) font where you have to fumble for the right number key to choose answer number 3 - no mice here...
Of course, movement is rather fluid (as long as your system is up to it, that is - for some mysterious reason, this game runs a lot worse on my rig than HL2 did), but that's not really an accomplishment when using a 3rd party 3D engine, is it?

"The atmosphere of the game is dark, gritty, and darkly humorous at times"? Well, I hope so. Unfortunately, my woes with other parts of this game so far have successfully prevented any kind of atmosphere from materializing. Certainly, the sound problems I experience have not made this any easier, too.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am convinced that there is a great game somewhere beneath all that. I have enjoyed both Arcanum and ToEE immensely despite all their flaws, and I have no doubt that Tim and friends have not lost their skills at game design since. But for the moment, I will first need to digest my disappointment and fire the game up again in a few weeks, hopefully augmented by a few mods that enhance things the way I feel it might be enhanced. (What do you mean, there is no modding support at all? ;) )

Until then, I will play the Fall. Sure, it's nowhere near as fancy, graphically (but visually much more rich, instead), and I highly doubt it will feature anywhere close to as deep and well-wrought a plot or intelligent dialogues. But then I never expected it to, and I got what I expected, and that's a kind of beauty all by itself.

@Sander: I did not intend to proof you wrong, specifically - really no offense intended - your worthwhile review simply offered some good quotes for me to oppose my opinions to. :)
