And Scott Everts the first map with the lights and shadows does look good, although unfinished, as one can see in this female char. I mean she wouldn´t be wearing that on the final version, right? :D

Not again.

Dude do you have any idea on how many Star Treck games ScottE worked? I mean he has to be hearing this joke for over a decade now, someone has to say it, or the universe will be unbalanced :D

Yes, that was an error and of course the pre-alpha demo was not finished. You could play the simple mission, go to both maps and fire your gun. Basically showed the combat and scripting system. That version only had the real time combat option. We hadn't gotten the turn based version in yet. It was never meant for the public but then after IP frakked up and cancelled it, it didn't matter anymore I guess. Though I like people to know (especially those unfamiliar with game development) to be very aware this was not final game art. Think of it like production sketches you see for movies. It was an outline to show upper management what we were trying to do. Nothing more.

I just hate it when people bitch about the ugly art. Please realize it was not finished! And also realize it was like 2 years ago! You can't compare it to currrent games coming out. It's no different than complaining that Fallout 1 looks dated.

As for Trek jokes, yes I was a big Trek fan and that was one of the reasons I was hired at IP back in 1991. They were working on Star Trek 25th and wanted someone familiar with the license to help them test it. After doing that I got promoted to designer on the CD-ROM version and then associate producer on Judgment Rites. So yes, I've heard them all! Back in the days before everyone was on the Internet and you actually called BBS's with a phone from your Apple II on an AppleCat modem I was known by the handle "Chief Engineer". Becky Heineman ran a BBS called the Electric Warehouse and gave me that handle. This would have been around the late 80's. Yes, I'm getting old. :)

Frissy: They obviously haven't used FSAA or any shaders, genius. Not surprisingly, since it's a *pre-alpha* version of the game. In truth, Van Buren would have looked *much* nicer than, for example, Neverwinter Nights.

Truth is almost any game looks better than NWN... and plays better... and sounds better and...

quick Q: did bethesda get f3 off the paper yet?

Logically,Bethesda will have taken f3 out of the paper (since they 've been working on it a little bit over a year and since they have a working engine to do so) but don't expect anything fantastic. My best guess would be that they have developed a simple tech demo like the VanBuren one to see what works and what doesn't.Generally don't expect bethesda to show us anything untill at least next year's E3,if there...

I had to register just to say this.

I would pay $50 gladly to play Fallout3 made with the FO1/2 engine. As long as they have a story and new items that live up to the first two, its money well spent.

Better than the $10 I spent on used Arcanum to try to get a Fallout fix.

Does anybody have any sketches and/or concept arts for Van Buren weapons? I am very interested in seeing in which direction the VB weapons design would have gone.

Rather useless arguing about the graphics, since one of the few things we do know is they intend to use the Oblivion engine. Which to me is a good thing, since having a engine already will free up time to release faster, or better yet, spend working on storyline and gameplay elements.

You are talking about the company that limited ranged combat in Oblivion to bows so they have enough time to do it right.
I somewhat lack faith that enough time for them to get Fallout 3 right exists in the universe.

fuuuuuuuuccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkk youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu innnntttteeeerplaaaayyyy

how could you fucking do this shit you fucking tart...

sorry..

Sorry

Sorry i have to be the asshole who said this.

But the graphics and the movement system looks like they messed around with the "Alone in the dark" engine.

iam glad Beth. got the new engine, they made a remarkable game (Morrowind) who not alone have nice graphics, but also have great gameplay, with lots of freedom. wich i think is a VERY important aspect of the fallout games (the good ones (F1/F2) ) .

And if you want the old engines (well, similar to them) use the mods and let beth use their proved skills to show us a new fallout experience.

My 2 cents

 */me thinks bigtime flamebait and presses submit.

Those are some brilliant thoughts, SoulRaven. You must be really smart and perceptive. Do you have a PhD in game design?

There are two quite different ways of creating "freedom" in a game. You can have well thought out and carefully designed quests that anticipate more than one approach and cater to them. Or you can create a huge world where any approach is allowed because they're all essentially generic actions in generic situations. You can either have a detailed world where player actions have meaning or you can have a seemingly randomized world where most things have no particular significance.

Guess what sets Fallout and Morrowind apart?

As for your "gee I'm glad Bethesda won't use the original Fallout engine" sentiment, it's time someone got banned just as a warning to all the other clones who think this is clever or original.
