Verizon blocks 4chan.

....Aand, as a consumer, this is why I'd never pay a cent to Verizion. When I'm getting the Internet, I want it to be UNLIMITED Internet, and TBH the company has no right to limit my freedom of speech. If they can get the legal system bring action against that shithole, then all the better, but I'd say outside the country's government, nobody should have the right to block content. Because next, there will always be some religious fanatic pricks who'd like to see something else banned, ad infinitum. Who knows, NMA could be next, for it's a forum discussing games involving child-killing, extreme violence, prostitution, drugs, cussing etc etc. There's no way a disgusting thing like that should exist, and we should ban everyone from using it. Glory to the Lord (or whoever the fuck else).

Seriously, it's sometimes scary how much influence China has on the US.

Verizon is a private company offering a service. They have every right to do this, just as you have every right to not buy their product and hurt them financially.

Although perhaps the (total failure that was) the sale of 3G frequencies gives Verizon a few more responsibilities.

I swear i'm the only person left in the world that uses a cellphone to make a call. I actually have Verizon and they've screwed me over a lot less than other phone companies.

And I can visit any site I wish on my pc and netbook. Who the hell is looking up porn on a tiny screen? Or better yet, who the hell needs a porn fix so bad that they can't wait to use a regular computer?

in practical senses I agree with you, why the hell to see porn and immoral things in a screen tinier than our hands, but I think if you pay for internet, you have the absolute and divine right to use whatever you want. So I cant see the real reason to ban 4chan, since it doesnt force you to enter into it. Its a kind of "I dont like you, and my friends dont like you either, adios" resolution that the company did.

I have a feeling this isn't going to effect the average Verizon cellphone consumer though. I mean, if they're blocking like CNN.com or something, sure. But how many people are going to be on a plan going, "Damn, I could go for some hot 4chan action right now."

I don't think the casual browser or texter even knows what 4chan is.

Other than that, I guess people can just go to some other provider.

Well, I may be wrong, but don't they also act as an internet provider, a major one as that? I don't think we're just talking cellphone-browsing here.

Verizon provides phone service, internet, and television.

I really don't care about this. Verizon reserves the right to block certain sites. I'm sure they have their reasons. They are not just going to block something because they just feel like it. If you use the services that Verizon provides, and you're bummed out that you can't access some stupid horrible site, complain to them or switch to a different provider.

Verizon is a Tier 1 ISP, which means a fairly large part of the shared parts of the internet goes over their uplinks and so on.

Now, I presume Verizon only blocks 4chan for their subscribers, but by your logic, what is stopping Verizon from blocking 4chan on all their infrastructure?

cencorship is never a good thing. Regardless if the target of the cencorship now is the most stupid source of informations or a valuable free political platform.

It's definitely not blocked for all Verizon customers, as I've got friends who are fios subscribers and they can still access it just fine.

Not a fan of censorship in any form, but if they had to block something, that shithole is certainly a good place to start.

verizons ability to do that would depend on the peerage agreements.

what would let them? the peerage agreement

what would stop them? the peerage agreement.

it all comes down to the peerage agreement.

Actually they don't (in the US), it qualifies as an anti-competitive practice. It's the same reason that Verizon can't block ATT, Google, Microsoft, or NMA.

the judge who finds them in breach of contract :P
they could pay a fine and from then on no longer sign any contracts that do not exclude 4chan. ;)

Yeah, what he said. ^ It's a slippery slope, and I don't trust them (or any company, not to mention government) to not jump off, cackling madly.
On the topic of 4chan, I can't stand the site itself but thoroughly enjoy many of the memes that come out of it -- I even occasionally laugh at the raids and such that they (used to?) do. Chanology, in particular, I found to be an odd blend of hilarity and justice -- I'm just that fond of Scientology.
