Perception is an attribute. You can not "use" perception.
Examine is a skill. You "use" it.
Skills are, in part, derived from attributes.
What are you having such a hard time understanding?
You can't use Perception but you can use Examine. It sounds like Perception just gives you base points in Examine and whatever other skills use it as a base stat, like in Fallout.Sub-Human said:The question I'm asking is - if a character has a high Perception, does he really need a good Examine skill if he can just take a look at a wall anyways? Or, similarly, if a character has a high Examine, does he need to invest in Perception to be able to notice things clearly?
Sub-Human said:How useful would Perception be if a character is specialized in Examine? What's the point of a modifier which you cannot use if you dumped points into an active ability with a similar function?

It's not useable. And your examine skill would suck without good perception.
Sub-Human said:But could you use a null Examine skill to look at a wall? So does that mean I could dump my points into Perception, getting a boost in several skills, then put a single point into Examine and have the advantage of being able to look for clues?
If that is true, that would make Examine a rather useless skill, since you could just get Perception, which gives you a boost in several other skills and free skill points which you can invest into Handguns or Cyborg Tech.

Uh, sure, you could probably dump all your attribute points into Perception (up to whatever the maximum is) which would give you a higher starting Examine skill, among others. But obviously, that would give you fewer points for your other attributes and you would still have to put skill points into Examine for tougher checks against that skill.Sub-Human said:So does that mean I could dump my points into Perception, getting a boost in several skills, then put a single point into Examine and have the advantage of being able to look for clues?

- Toaster repair : general repair skill ?
- Examine ?
- Brute Force : i would have say it was intimidate but like you already have this skill it's maybe one more combat skill then ?
- Cyborg Tech is the only "science" skill ?
- Outdoorsman and Animal Whisperer could be use to do what kind of things (set trap for example ? travel faster if like in Fallout ? )
Lot of combat skills, not a bad thing in a party cRPG (i don't wish perfect balance but i do hope none are useless)
