What's your opinion on Minecraft?

yes, and what do you hear from Notch today? What was the last game/project he worked on.

Minecraft is for sure a very fun game, but I think it got a bit to much hype for what it was/is. It is very different to many of the other games you find on the market, it is a very stark contrast to the typical Biowaseque games and blockbuster titels that you get from Ubisoft, Activision and the like where you get something that has a higher focus on graphics then gameplay.

Minecraft so far, is for me a one hit wonder. Notch said once by himself, that he doesnt feel to be like a typical game developer, as he likes to experiment and just work. But to create succesfull games requires I guess a bit more then just that. Thats why I saw minecraft a bit as "accident" here.

It wasn't an accident, Notch simply managed to cultivate a culture around his product. That's the hardest thing to do as a game developer, but also one of the most rewarding. The fact that the game is constantly being added to, that there's incentive for long time fans to keep playing, is definitely a plus.

hey, I am not telling you that the game is "bad", that you can't enjoy it or that it didnt left some impact on gaming.

All I am saying is, that its not the baby jesus of gaming, like some people describe it. It has some very great ideas inside it. But its not the kind of game that I want to see everywhere. Particularly as I personaly find the visuals, from the design, super ugly, where some 30 year old games look better.

do you missunderstand me on purpose? You like the game! I get it. Thats ok for me. I definitely see the quality it has. But outside of that, I say it again, it does not deserve the huge hype it got, because the impact it had on the gaming world was very little if any at all.

That's what I am talking about. Its not about the quality of the game per se. For me, personaly, visuals play a huge role, not the power of the grahpic, but the aesthetics, and minecraft for example has none. But outside of that, I dont see minecraft for example pushing gaming foreward in the same sense that for example Diablo did (as game) or if you want Fallout or PT.

I think the claim that a game is over hyped because you failed to play it is spurious at best, Minecraft has sold more copies that all of the fallouts combined. It's impact in the gaming world is undisputed and will be felt for years to come.

So popularity = quality? Is that what you want to say?

I think I said somewhere that minecraft IS a good game. But please, be my guest. What kind of impact did minecraft had on the gaming world?

Only the fact that almost everything coming out these days is voxel based or has some element of giving the player the ability to create their own content/levels ect.

Just look at the new Everquest. And like 20 other games coming down the pike.

Edit to add: And I'm not really a big fan of this trend. You have survival horror voxel games coming out for chrissakes.

Well, we could have worse trends than entirely gameplay dependant games, even if the gameplay isn't that incredible we could do worse. We could have an influx of Cut scene dispenser games coming out on the indie scene too.

No. I'm sure we understand you well enough. It's easy enough to blame us for your own shortcomings, but the truth is the fault lies in your projection, not our reception. The only way forward is to improve yourself, not drag everyone down to your level.

As for this current trend, there will be some who like it, and some who don't, and it doesn't matter in any case. It will pass eventually, just like the faux retro fad that we just went through. The market will demand voxels, become saturated with voxels, and be purged of voxels within the next few years. It's all cyclical, and I'm excited for what will come after it.

The development of DayZ is following the minecraft model closly, as Dean is a big fan of what Markus did with Minecraft.

I love Minecraft had a ton of fun playing it with friends and because it did so well it helps to show other indie games they can do it to like DayZ.

It had a lot of potential in the early days, but it seems Notch didn't know whether to appeal to the people who wanted a wilderness survival game or the people who wanted a building/crafting game where Zombies come at night and knock your building blocks down, so he went for a mix that doesn't really satisfy either.

It's still pretty fun, for a while, but I definitely think they need to stop focusing on the hamfisted "RPG" elements and instead improve upon the main features of the game, like why is it that a dirt block house is as sturdy and can take the same kind of attack from Monsters as one made of solid iron? Why is Hunger still a thing? why not revamp the ore system to add longevity and variety? why not make crafting a bit more complex and mining a little less tedious?

The game should feel like building a a lego fortress/base that gets assaulted at night by hordes of ravenous monsters, and you have to earn and build the blocks, and certain blocks are tougher than others (I.e a wall made of mud will be smashed easily by a monster, but one made of solid obsidian is going to be invincible.)

I'm with you on that. I do like when I was still on pc some of the rpg mods for it like trading with the villages was cool and making you do things faster as you leveled up.It would be cool if they made the day and night cycles longer and added the full on assaults.

yeah the graphics areb't great on deafault but with a texture pack it looks alright
for gameplay side of things not many games have kept me entertained for so long as this game has i've been playing it for over two years now and occalsionally i'll have a break from it for a week or two but that's usualy because i've lost inspiration of what to build next as thats the side i love to it the creativity but the surving stuff is also pretty neat and the game is so much better when played with friends so you can talk to them. as for the game changing it has an update ever so often the last one introduced new biomes and new blocks, when i started playing the game it was in beta and things have changed so much since then with new biomes, new code that generates villages and temples and you can trade with villagers, the end, new enemies, new animals like horses all of this is in the default game and not mods because i don't play with mods
