Where do you see RPGs in five years?

do you think that RPGs will continue to be dumbed down till theres no difference between a rpg and fps shooter?. Or do you think with the success of games like wasteland 2 and pillars of eternity that RPGs are making a comeback.i think it's a mix of the two. I think Kickstarter RPGs are gonna be popular while AAA games will continue to dumb down the rpg genre.

AAA games have been dumbed down for a while because Publishers are afraid to take risks.
The indie market doesn't have that to lose, so they take those risks and 9 times out of 10, they pay off.
To be honest, the industry is at a point where no one knows where it's going.
We just have to wait and see what happens

AAA is going for the sweet spot in fun, action based gameplay, some character development and open worlds, imo. Going too deep they will lose out on the short attention span crowd (or people who just don't want to bother), going too linear they are just making another shooter with worse mechanics. I think Witcher 3 is the new standard for AAA rpg games.

Mainstream RPG's will keep withering away from under the continuous trending of conventional action gaming. I don't see anything out there to suggest otherwise -- what with the most hailed upon examples being something like Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 (both with very loose ties to the conventional RPG genre left anymore).

I do believe, though, that the newly built niche for those more oldschool games like Wasteland 2 et al will hold its place. I don't believe it'll grow much anymore, but I don't think it's going anywhere either.

There is a difference between them and Fallout 4? Ho, well. I guess there is. But I would argue, it is really not very large. How much can you water down Fallout 4, I am curious? You could remove the leveling I suppose ... and limit the dialog to 2 answers, like Yes and Yes, but later. ...

I predict RPGs will become so dumbed down that, in the near future, there will be no semblance of choice left, and all we will get are Last of Us-type games, fully focused on a storyline.

In 15 years time, people will remember Fallout 5 as "that one game with a cool storyline" (even if it's actually shite).

I think it's gonna be similar as today''s RPGs. I doubt AAA games could be dumbed down even more than Fallout 4 already is and still be called RPGs.

Still, we will have great indie/Kickstarter games so I don't really care about what passes as an RPG for most gamers.

"Border-Call-Cry-out-5: The quest for more generic loot"

Games are going to look like that parody of CoD that was released with Bulletstorm. If you haven't seen it look it up. It's called "Duty Calls."

I had totally forgot about that game, thanks for reminding me.

SERGEANT OF THE MASTER SERGEANTS MOST IMPORTANT PERSON OF EXTREME SERGEANT TO THE MAX!

Still better than Fallout 4

I think a divide will develop (or rather continue to develop) between real RPGs made by indie devs and "RPGs" made by triple-A developers. AAAs will continue to slap an RPG label on games with different weapon stats but hopefully the indies will be able to set in a new renaissance for RPGs a la the Infinity Engine.

Hopefully less like shooters.

Everything used to be a side scroller.

No everything's a shooter.

Maybe RPGs (like the witcher 3) will be next. Who knows?

I'm mostly interested in indie or mid-level CRPGs. Games with tactical turn-based combat, lots of dialogue, and hopefully a good amount of choice and consequence. Age of Decadence is probably my favorite game of all time. In general I think RPGs are too combat heavy and I miss the old school games where most combat was avoidable if your character was smart / charismatic enough. Sure combat should be an option to advance through the game, but not the only option and not necessarily even the best / default option.

I have very little interest in most AAA "RPG"s, which really seem to be made with Console / Action players in mind. I'll probably check out Deus Ex: MD though, because at least you'll have the option to play it as a stealth game rather than a shooter.

5 years isn't that long in the gaming world, especially not for rpg's. A lot of the games that will be released in about 5 years are probably already in the planning stages. And I don't think much will have happened when it comes to AAA games, at least.

The indie and semi-indie scene will hopefully grow with some studios doing well and putting out some bigger games. So far, the rpg genre seems to have been relatively spared from the shovelware crap that every kid who just learned 3D and some scripting in their favorite game engine is selling under the Early Access banner on Steam. Maybe because an rpg, no matter how basic, actually requires some writing and planning, instead of just copying the latest fad, slapping some pixel-art or their cousins mad 3D-skillz on. So hopefully that will stay the same and the actual indie rpg's we get will actually have some thought and labor put into them.

It will be very interesting to see where especially Larian and Obsidian are. I hope they can move away from Kickstarter, but still remain fairly independant and create their dream games.
