why fallout 2 sucks (spoilers) (no I don't like fo3-4)

So in my very first melee run I'm now level 14, just got the GECK, have APA, a Mega Powerfist, Marcus and Goris as companions, and am now going to save the villagers.
Melee is fucking annoying. It's better now that I have APA, but I seriously need to start using drugs (Psycho and Jet, specifically) if I want to murder my way through Navarro.
Only 14? Must've skipped a lot. Also, sounds like someone didn't take Bonus Move. (or just have low AP)
Just beat the game with a unarmed run and the killapp patch (2.3.3 something). The weird part of the horrigan fight part is that i couldn´t get the turrets to switch side using the room console. It asked about Id pass but I remember only needing a high sciense skill to hack it.

Also, New Reno ended with the Mordino Family winning but I joined the Salvatore family and the ending didn´t mention anything about them.
Pretty sure you always need the president's ID to get them to switch sides, but can switch them off just using science.

Also, New Reno usually ends with Mordino on top if you don't kill any of their men and don't pick up Myron. Details here http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html#end

Even as a ranged character I pretty much always have 2 ranks of bonus move.

4 free AP for movement makes fights against deathclaws/melee/etc so much easier.

Yeah, I haven't really done anything in Reno yet (tried to get the money from Renesco, but the dialogue option isn't there), for example.
I have 10 AP (having taken Actio Boy once), but yeah, skipped Bonus Move. Burned one perk on Mutate! so I could get rid of Heavy Handed. My char kinda sucks, but it's still all possible. I'm now dumping a lot of points into speech and science so the fight against Horrigan will be a bit more pleasant.

I started with 8 Agility, got the +1 agility needle from EPA, then used 'gain agility' to get to 10. ^_^

But...I am using energy weapons...Which frankly I find aren't as OP as they were in FO1... ;(

Gauss rifle seems to be the best weapon in the game.

Yeah, Enclave troopers have insane laser and plasma resistance, so they're not that good. I usually go for Turbo Plasmarifle and Pulse Rifle with 10+ action points so I can get two aimed shots per round, frying eyes all the time. Most often I have rather low luck, but going for the eyes gives a pretty good crit modifier anyway, so the damage is quite high in the end. But yeah, Gauss Rifle is a beast. Maybe I should put a few more points into small arms so I have >100% when I get one... Good to get rid of fleeing enemies.

Fixed the end for you. ;P

Right now I have the turbo plasma rifle, sad all it has going for it, is a minor damage buff, a teeny bit more range, and a different item slot model.

I miss the days of -1 ap cost for it. ;(

I gave some of my companions gauss rifles, but I preferred the pulse rifle myself. It was usually a one-hit kill on every enemy, just about. If I needed to conserve fusion cells, I would just use the solar scorcher instead.

Just found myself another pulse rifle (I gave mine to Marcus, because the big lug can't be trusted with anything else), and have found it a hell of a lot better than the TPR...

Which is sad, FO2 had a shitload too much power creep.

Imagine thinking what's arguably the best in the series as "boring".

Your all entitled to your own opinions!

I love Fallout 1’s lore, atmosphere, and worldbuilding, but in terms of gameplay it’s barren. There are literally...12 locations, and 5 of them are dungeons. After playing it once I don’t really see any reason to play it again.

Quality>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Quantity. Later Fallout games are guilty of filler locations with no point. And the reason for being "boring" is the lower amount of locations, that's such a weak reason for that.

If anything, that makes Fallout 1 more replayable since all of the locations are of quality and the playthrough doesn't take forever.

Quality? What makes the Fallout 1 locations better quality?

Also, yes it does matter. It’s supposed to be open world. How fun is an open world game where the world is %99.9 empty desert squares?

Handcrafted, clearly thought through with great level design. As much as i like Fallout 2, a lot of locations are filler with reused assets, victim of the rushed development of the game. Honestly, if they were removed, the game would be better off, even if i like some of the locations.

Not when most of the content is filler, like the Bethesda Fallouts. Filling a world with shitty content just to make the world seem big is ass design. Even New Vegas is guilty of filler locations with no point, even if they make sense given what the game is based on.

Except Fallout 1 (and 2 for that matter) aren't really open world games in the traditional sense. Sure, you can roam around aimlessly, but the games clearly want you to go in specific directions, even if you can ignore them. And an huge chunk of Fallout 2 is also just a desert, so i guess Fallout 2 is boring as well.

Plus Fallout 1's map isn't really big enough to make the lower amount of locations feel too apart from each other. So the amount of locations in the game is made around the size of the map, meaning 99,9% of the map being a desert is a big ass exaggeration.

Like I said, Fallouts atmosphere and lore are good, it’s just the game itself that’s boring and buggy.

My favorite parts of F1 are from the start to reaching the Hub, but I wish they could’ve added more locations. I like filler locations, they’re great!

Fallout 1 is awesome. If you need filler locations, just play 1 and then jump straight into 2. Basically the same game, but ridiculous amounts of content. Honestly, I think of them as 2 parts of the same game.

I don't really know why you would find it boring unless you don't like the combat, in which case I don't know what to tell you. I love it. As far as buggy? Uh, I guess, but not in comparison to so many other games in its genre...
