why fallout 2 sucks (spoilers) (no I don't like fo3-4)

You get at least to the Hub / Boneyard. The punny ghouls in Necropolish arent a threat either. The only real threat are deathclaws and super mutants. The fight with the gang in the Hub can be tough too, but that's about it. Like i wrote, the hunting rifle lets you completely skip the 10mm pistol as well as the shotgun. Due to range and your playstyle it can even surpass the combat shotgun. The next best thing would be the sniper rifle in the Hub. Of course, this also depends on your playstyle a bit.

I always stick to rifles in the classic Fallout games. Something about being able to critically hit someone in the eyes and blinding them always appealed to me whenever I pick a playstyle plus they help with Deathclaws (managed to kill the one near the Hub with a hunting riffle and a lot of luck).

I may eventually try a unarmed run for 2 someday.

I personally went for hunting rifle, and leather/metal armour.

Then move onto sniper/combat armour.

Then to plasma (tag energy weapons from the start, and dump excess points into it, fallout 1 doesn't have much use for the majority of skills, unlike fallout 2) rifle and power armour/hardened.

Usually preferred one of the automatics, myself. Though in Tactics, a full squad with hunting rifles felt pretty great.

AR/Combat Shotgun eh?

Yeah, not a fan of burst weapons. XD

I tried using the minigun for a crit build, it worked quite well.

The Vault 15 is a pretty good example. The items you can find there simply arent necessary. In fact, the hunting rifle alone can already shift the balance drastically, as it is better than a shotgun in almost all cases, therefore makes you skip the early game shotgun completely up until even tye combat shotgun or the assault rifle (depending on playstyle).

Therefore, if you accidentally find the item by pixelhunting (there aren any other such situations in thr game), you probably feel very rewarded.
And you get a hunting rifle for free in Junktown most of the time, anyway.

/edit: Unarmed run with RP is exhausting, yet satisfying. I took "Mutate" to exchange Heavy Handed with Bloody Mess to increase my crit chance, and the additional damage is miniscule now that I have power fist and haymaker. Getting the car really helped with the rapey random encounters, but I really need better armor now. And a Mega Powerfist.

Not sure if RP did it, but the encounters where you are literally surrounded by enemies are absolute bullshit.

How the hell would that even occur in a DESERT!? D;

Even worse, I had an encounter where a caravan was 'fighting' fire gecko...Except the fire gecko and caravan was mixed into a single 'ball'.

In literally 1 turn, and 5 or so fire breaths later, the entire caravan was ash.

Don't forget carrying motion sensor, that would help you avoid random encounters a little. Too bad that Narg is gifted and dumb simultaneosly, he's often short of skill points. Custom-made characters are definitely better for unarmed run, I'm rolling through the Mariposa base right now:

is that true? Motion sensor will make encounters less bullshit?

No, motion sensor grants +20 bonus to your Outdoorsman skill. High PER makes positioning in random encounters less dangerous.

I have like...9 perception, and nearly 100 outdoorsman... DX

And yet I spawn in between enemies who tarpit me, luckliy I have like 5+ followers to take the hits.

That picture has to be photoshoped because that fight is impossible! /sarcasm

Curiously I just recently beat that encounter, admittedly with a load of companions with good guns (G11e's are free...As are their ammo) its piss easy.

First time I fought him, I still won...Alone.

killed everything on the first 2 floors of the enclave main base, then left my companions behind b4 the puzzle room b/c I didn't want marcus dying any more. on the next floor, everyone acted like I belonged there, even though I made my intentions clear in dialogue. imagine that pacing, it was awful... but it felt like I was supposed to be in there alone, figuring out how to win without fighting. unfortunately with narg and an int of 6 (increased previously somehow), it wasn't possible. so I went back up, got companions, wiped everything in floors 3 and 4 out, but didn't get back to my imprisoned tribesmen to rescue them. I just went straight for the exit. funny thing, the ending credits said that I saved them. I assume after leaving the base, we went back for them and it just wasn't shown, okay, lol.

side note: the first time I killed horrigan the app instantly crashed. the second time he was mostly obscured by the side of a wall so I didn't really get to see him get torn apart.

more complaints: can I just load the damn game? why do I have to wait until the action is on me to pause and load the game? a party member died, just let me load.

can my hit points just automatically get reduced to w/e they are? do I really have to watch them go down and down well beyond -100 before I can load?

do I have to watch characters get up for 2 seconds every time they get knocked down and don't want to stay down b4 the next action can happen?

do I have to watch characters slide all the way across the screen after getting hit by melee or unarmed so often?

also, I remember an NPC in san fran or ncr casually mentioning that the enclave was what was left of the former US gov b4 the war. that sort of killed what should have been a shocking moment at the enclave, again making for bad, awkward pacing.

funny sidenote: I remember saving in the middle of combat in FO1 all the time, but not being able to do so in this game. but I just realized that it'll let me do it at the very beginning of my turn if I hadn't started my turn knocked down to the ground. I know I tried it b4 but I must have just been knocked down. what a thing to learn at the end of the game, so many headaches could have been saved....

I can't lie though, it was satisfying to finish and all of those custom, tailored ending voiceovers about the places I impacted were brilliant. I think the game would be a whole lot better without combat at all, it's a nice option, but I feel like I missed out on the game. I started a 10 int, 10 luck, 10 cha, 7 agi, 1 str, 1 per, 1 endurance character with the good natured and jinxed traits (b/c I don't plan on fighting so only the enemies will suffer its consequences), tagging sneak, steal, and speech. hopefully the game is a little better this way and running away from battles works the way I imagine it will.

so far: temple of trials was really easy and seemed far less tedious. I hope this is an indication of what combat will be like for the rest of the game. stealing in order to gain xp seems to be the new cause of the save/load aspect I hated so much.

When you blow up the reactor, it opens the prisoners cells... Yet, i don't recall if it is explained how they pass through the guards. (especially if you don't release the virus and set the alarm)

Saving while in combat was disabled with Sfall by default. It's because the game is buggy / can fuck up if you load a game saved in combat (like losing a turn, etc). I think this has been the case in Fo1 as well.

Code:
;Prevents you from saving in combat except at the start of your turn to avoid a few bugs
;Note that even with this option enabled, it is still not advisable to save in combat at all.
;Set to 2 to block all saving in combat
SaveInCombatFix=1

Yes, with Sfall.
Code:
;Set to 1 to speed up the hp/ac counter animations
;Set to 2 to update the hp/ac counters instantly
SpeedInterfaceCounterAnims=0

Yes, because this game is turn based. It works in turns.

Does he actually have any arguments related to the actual gameplay? Or is he just going to complain that a TURN BASED GAME BASED OFF A FUCKING PEN AND PAPER GAME is slow!?

Fuck, I don't want to see him play an ACTUAL GURPS pen and paper game, he'd have a stroke.

uh yeah, SO MANY. so many, in fact, that most ppl can't bother to read through them b/c the many lists of problems that I've posted while going through the game result in very long posts that ppl tend to skip over.

I don't even think I covered how far fetched it is for the US gov to think that spreading the FEV virus is a good idea after only inoculating those at the enclave and navarro (who were actually all dead in my run, so it made no sense at all. nvm the fact that I killed everyone in the first 2 floors of the enclave and then after proceeding to the third level, everyone acted like all was normal and I belonged there).

I'm almost positive that the pres said something along the lines of, "we used your tribesmen as test subjects for the FEV and inoculation," and my only choice of dialogue was, "but you didn't test the inoculation on my tribesmen?" to which the pres replied, "I hardly think that would be necessary." that's extremely poorly written and self-contradictory, sorry. I actually loaded and had the convo again b/c I couldn't believe it was really that bad. even now, I'm not 100% sure. I feel like this must be a false memory. feel free to correct me. even if I'm wrong in that, it was still amid a whole mess of plot holes and nonsense. why would the pres even tell me all of these things? why can I just waltz into his office? they couldn't think of any other way to get this info through to me? it HAD to be a one on one convo with the pres, who, after informing of my intentions to sabotage, let's me go and doesn't say a word to anyone? try to make sense of this: 1. no one's inoculated yet. 2. they plan to spread the virus via jetstreams. 3. they're injecting ppl with the virus. what? it's clearly an airborne virus, is it not? it would already be everywhere, especially since it's established that the virus was made elsewhere and that upon its release in a single remote location, everyone in the world would be dead within a month. and if it's airborne, why are they injecting ppl with it? that's not how they plan to spread it across the globe, so why would they test it like that? how is it that their reasons for releasing it are to kill everyone who's been affected by radiation? I know a lot of ppl are bigots, but goddamn. you wouldn't even be able to look at someone's DNA and tell that they're not human just b/c they've been exposed to radiation, first off. secondly, if they were so different, why would a virus that targets a specific species have an effect on humans, those non-humans, but no other species? is it versatile or not? if it is, the most unrealistically deadly virus in history is too dangerous to let loose in the environment, and if it isn't, then you're not killing any non-humans anyway. also, how does the destruction of the enclave base completely eradicate such a virus? that's like soaping a plate or boiling some water and expecting to kill 100% of the bacteria. the player could have at least had the ability and foresight to secure the anti-virus that the enclave also supposedly had, like any non-idiot would. the slides at the end were great and made me want to play through it differently, but it requires a suspension of disbelief to take their content as factual, seeing as how I can't believe anyone would have lasted very long after the enclave base self-destructed. (who creates a mechanism for the purpose of destroying their own base anyway? wouldn't such a large complex require dangerous explosives everywhere for that to even be possible, and in the event that it's purposefully used, aren't you in "ready to die" mode anyway, making it not worth the risk, let alone expense, of setting up the system in the first place? "well now that the installation is fully constructed, all we need is a button that blows the whole place up in case we have no other option but to destroy ourselves, but not without the measure of a generous time limit which allows any intruder to escape the complex with whatever they need anyway!" it's the sort of thing that only exists as a plot device for James Bond type villains to make for increased tension, at the cost of realism. it's stupid. it's something I liked it as a teenager in one of the resident evil games though. I suppose it's a guilty pleasure for me too tbh.)

I did actually enjoy the story anyway, even that final section at the enclave, but it's far from the masterpiece ppl make it out to be and it's probably no less faulty than 3 or 4 in any aspect except for customization (from what I've heard).

So in my very first melee run I'm now level 14, just got the GECK, have APA, a Mega Powerfist, Marcus and Goris as companions, and am now going to save the villagers.
Melee is fucking annoying. It's better now that I have APA, but I seriously need to start using drugs (Psycho and Jet, specifically) if I want to murder my way through Navarro.

Just beat the game with a unarmed run and the killapp patch (2.3.3 something). The weird part of the horrigan fight part is that i couldn´t get the turrets to switch side using the room console. It asked about Id pass but I remember only needing a high sciense skill to hack it.

Also, New Reno ended with the Mordino Family winning but I joined the Salvatore family and the ending didn´t mention anything about them.
