Why Game Developers Fear the Steam User

On top if it King Pin also had a plot that was pretty grounded compard to most games that I remember. A guy out on revenge against a mobster or something. While also becoming a mobster in the process.
The Kingpin guy was pretty much a mobster to begin with, and not a nice person at all. But yeah, the story was a bit more down to earth and just grittier than other games at the time. I mean, you had stuff like Half Life and Unreal at the time, and quite a lot of shooters were similarly colourful and scifi and so on. Blood and gore, fine, yeah, but Kingpin was one of the first to really go all grit and grime.
Also, it had phantastic art direction, but by now everyone here should know that I'm a huge fan of that game.

And characters that looked like a human-ish skin draped over wobbling, boneless sacks of meat and gas.
Definitely a fun game back in the day but it has not aged well at all.

Yeah, Quake 2 engine had some quirks. Kingpin had some excellent fire effects, though, and those did age quite well, I think. Kingpin really needs a sequel or at least a remake. Those grimy, gritty back streets would look awesome in CryEngine-levels of fidelity.
Also, it had one of the most satisfying shotguns of any video game.

Ah, the animations of idTech 2... Hits me right in the nostalgia.

Some of my favourite games were done on idTech2. Quake 2, Kingpin, Soldier of Fortune... And the other games made with it were also cool, like Anachronox, SiN, and Heretic II. Shit, I even liked CIA Operative: Solo Missions back then :D
