Wikitardation

Does this mean that all of Wikipedia will look like the Uncyclopedia article on spam? When will the feet-ballot be announced? May I wear hobnailed boots?

what do you mean by "vote with my feet" though?

Leave.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. Does our resident catman object to wikia attempt to reimburse its hosting losses?

Since they claim Wikia is a community rather than a hosting service? Yes.

Especially since it's going to be obligatory and completely screw up frontpages. And is announced four days before this new "feature" is installed.

Oh come on just, because I don't know the meaning of a particular euphemism doesn't make me some sort of idiot.

Not that I'd ever leave just, because you told me too.

I understand that it is a moral issue for not having ads on Wikia, but doesn't everybody sane use Firefox's Ad-block add-on to get rid of these junks?

I've already set it up, and works fine.

Yes.

It's a good thing Firefox is still the minority browser, tho'. That's going to seriously cut into ad revenue, which has already been crippled since the bubble burst.

At the end of the day, AdBlock *will* hurt ad-supported sites, including such sites as NMA.

Eh.

The MediaWiki engine's been abused left right and center already, what's one more abomination coming about by it.

Wikipedia is meant to be about learning, it's turning into the next Geocities with the MediaWiki garbage, this is just another step in destroying the original principles and ideals of the Wikipedia Organization.

I understand that it will hurt sites like this, but I don't understand how this ad-support supposed to work in the first place.
Am I expected to click on these? Or is it enough that they are downloaded with the page?

I mean I've never clicked on any of the ads I've seen on internet pages.
For me, it isn't just useless information, it is non-information. It made complete sense to not see something that is irrelevant to me, and in turn I'm also irrelevant to the ad.

Kharn, tell me, where is the logic in forcing a change that will propably make most of the users leave, thus REDUCING any possible revenue?

I seriously doubt it will make a relevant amount of users leave, let alone "most"

Doesn't matter. 's the same thing with TV commercials. I've never bought a product because of a TV commercial. But the people who pay for the ads believe it works, and market studies shows it works, so heck, it probably works.

That means that the service that I like to consume - like this site - is provided for free thanks to a small banner that someone is willing to pay for.

Sounds like a win-win situation, doesn't it?

It's the take-over ads and annoying flash pop-ups that fucked it up. But that's because companies no longer believes the banners were getting the attention they were paying for. All 'coz of the bubble-burst.

If biggest Wikis take up and leave? Yes, it will.

BN, did you actually take a look how it's supposed to look?

A large, annoying square ad space smack in the middle of the article. That's not what I call "a small banner".

I always add sites i approve of to the exception list in my Adblock filters. :p As long as the ads aren't VERY annoying.

Ok, now you're starting to annoy me.

Without further knowledge of the situation, I will assume that wikia, like every MediaWiki-using site on the internet, found it exceedingly difficult to foot the bills. They could either have asked for your money (have they ever? It works for wikipedia) or expand ads at no cost to anyone.

You're getting something for free and all that is asked of you is to suffer the mild discomfort of an ugly ad, not even a take-over add or flash-ad (which is what we have on GameBanshee). Your response? "Whine whine. I want it to be free because I deserve to get stuff for free"

Where did I say I want it for free? I want the ads OUTSIDE the main article space.

Seriously, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that approx. 300x300 ads in the MAIN ARTICLE SPACE will break the entire article.
