Rattus Rattus[/i]]Besides, Poll also made a few mistakes in your favor. For instance, your second goal was irregular, because the ball was clearly in offside. Still, Poll also ignored one of Tomas' idiotic moves in the penalty area, so those two oversights kind of even out.

Funny thing about Stjepan Tomas - no one has been able to explain what the hell he was trying to pull, playing with his hand in the penalty area and all. Another funny thing - he is a very good friend of Mark Viduka. Word got out that SOA (the Croatian intelligence agency) might haul Tomas in for questioning, because it's just mind-boggling that a player with almost a decade of experience playing for the Croatian national team could do something so stupid, not once but *twice* in the same match.

Regardless, even if SOA don't subject Tomas to their excellent interrogation techniques, he can start looking for a new job, because his football career is over. He need not fear, though - I hear the national handball team is looking for defenders.
Don't be silly. Handballs are quite common, Maradona's most famous goal was a handball. Hell, it happened a lot more conspicuously in the Mexico-Portugal match (Marquez) and I believe twice in the Serbia-Cote d'Ivoire match.

And the refs don't hate you, don't be silly. You got a few decisions against you, big deal, it happens in football.

I joke. But not for no reason. We have received a much higher ratio of fouls than we deserve considering how things have actually gone, maybe because of the 'roughest team' myths.

Poll wasn't good enough, but neither were his supporting staff. Actually, the whole system isn't good enough. I strongly believe that in competitions as important as the World Cup, organizers should make more use of technology, such as when field officials are in doubt about a decision, but punishing players severely for misbehaving or abusing the system. A 3 second replay can make the difference between victory and defeat, so people would be willing to wait. I know that it would put huge pressure on refs if the system was still based on them (but probably little more than they have already), but a good balance could be worked out and people would get used to it. Video refs are well worth thinking about.

There were a lot of coincidences in the Aus:Cro match though, even if mistakes mostly balanced out. Interestingly nobody mentioned Kewell's being offside in our media (I didn't notice myself).

Or maybe you got refs who weren't from England, or refs that blow at very minor fouls. Whatever. It's tough, but over the course of a tournament, looking at it objectively, you'll probably be judged fairly.

Not if it comes to the level of American Football. The problem with football is that it's a constantly revolving play, you can't just stop play to look at a replay for a bit. For such things as balls over the line I can see it working, though. Possibly for off-side. Very possibly for cards. Not for the rest.

Probably not. FIFA does employ professional referees, but its tendency, as mentioned, to take on referees from smaller countries as bargaining material rather than objectively taking on the best referees does hurt the game.

This is funny because you're forgetting that in the AFL, amusingly enough, they *don't* use professional, full-time referees. It's fucking ridiculous, I know, but they don't.

Replay is something football could use, though. As Marco van Basten said, what football needs is actually stopping the clock to allow for camera reviews and 70 minutes of playing time instead of 90 (if you look at analysis now, the actual playing time usually boils down to 60 minutes out of 90, which is pathetic).

Though no camera reviews for shitty advertisment requests, please.

That's true, but that's a pain for every team, not just the Australian.

...
What? (Not that our refs are full-time, most have jobs as well)

It depends. Not if they're going to stop the match for every foul, that's silly. Mainly because it takes a lot of speed and excitement out of the game, and removes the wonderful advantage-rule.

Fuck American Football.

I'm serious. Multi-billion business and the Superbowl is whistled by a highschool teacher. Shit.

Off-side is something that may or may not be up for discussion constantly. Football would certainly be more exciting without it.

But it's certainly one of those rules that'd be easier to review. Just think of how many times the commentator, with his view-screens disagrees with the ref.

I'd think it'd get more boring. Michel Platini said that the game would just get back to throwing long balls across the pitch, hoping that someone gets on the end of it. Off-side is what makes the game a lot more intelligent, because it forces the attackers to pay attention to the defense instead of standing a couple of metres behind them. It also benefits teams that play up the pitch, and hence more offensively.

Very true.

My predictions for the next games.

1)Germany 1 - 0 Sweden
2)Argentina 3-1 Mexico
3)Portugal 2-1 Holand
4)England 2-0 Ecuador

1)This should be a cracking game. Germany the obvious favorite here. But Sweden will be tougher then anything the Germans have played thus far... ditto the other way around too... It also depends if ibrahimovic plays against germany...

2)the chances are much in favour of Argentina. In the match with Holland the Dutch players were very rough, intimidating the Argentinians with their hard tackles and faults. Mexico cannot play that harsh. In my opinion, in the match with Mexico the coach Pekerman will test a few players and some new tactics but it wont be enough.

3) Besides the past I will go by saying 50-50. Anything possible. And as with a lot of games this tournament, the referee might have a big part in this, sadly enough.Still my money is on portugal.

4)England are better than Equador, there is no question about that, but on their day they could give them trouble, particularly if England give Equador as many counterattacking opportunities as they did against T&T.

You wouldn't think it the way the game is going at the moment. Sweden is getting a brutwurst in the anus from the Germans. 2 - 0 and Sweden down to 10 men.

Well, that was rather dissappointing. Good show by the Germans, though.
At least they're getting a lot better as the tournament progresses.

I'd hate to shatter your illusions, but all football referees, including the world top, are school teachers/policemen/architects etc. during the weeks. There isn't a single football referee, not in Europe nor anywhere, that does this full-time. The WC final will be whistled by a schoolteacher too.

But y'know, in a way this isn't really all that horrible. Fulminating on bad offside decisions is, in my humble opinion, an integral part of football's charm.

Also, Argentina-Mexico was an excellent match.

Yes there is. Colina. Too bad he had to stop.

Yep.

As for the refs, it's a bit weird that they earn a lot less money than anyone else involved in the game. Colina made a maximum of some 80,000 euros a year, which is ridiculously little compared to everyone else in the game.

I know, it's fucked up. The refs are on the field just like the players, and are, in a way, their bosses during gametime. They shouldn't earn as much as the players perhaps, but they should definitely be more than is considered well paid for regular, mortal occupations.

Plus, a better pay would avoid scandals like in Germany or Italy.

Because, y'know, they're only human.

Of course, this form of insight (or any insight, for that matter) is of course not to be expected from the short sighted idiots that lead football associations.

I just overheard a clip from two years ago of the FIFA President saying he wanted such professional referees.

And Poll has been predictably hammered by his colleagues, in spite of his past good performances. Go the Poms.

Bah.

Ah well, congratulations, Briosa. A decent game, very fun to watch, but incredible refereeing. 16 yellows, 4 reds. Bloody hell, that Ivanov should never be allowed to ref again. He's got an average of almost 9 cards.
Ah well, a somewhat deserved win, although I think we should've at least gotten extended play.
