Inxile talks about Van Buren

Most interesting. Accidentally, today after few years I installed Van buren tech demo again and read some stuff abouit it. Even recreated account on this forum. A game that would incorporate more of what Fallout 3 Van Buren could have been would be great.

hmm inxile use our sentiments toward VanBuren to gauge the temperature for some new unrelated product..

Now days everyone throw names of classics into the air in hope to open our pockets.. I have zero intention to put any more money into kickstarters, now that they know there is a market here, i am going to wait until they put up complete product before i buy it, no more vague promises praying on my nostalgia.

Hm...so VB would/could be a direct prequel to NV?

Takes place in 2277, and leads up to the First Battle of Hoover Dam, and along the way you find Victor Presper and foil his plan

I'm almost tempted to suggest that the Courier and Ulysses show up, but that would lead to some contradictions with NV, wouldn't it?

I've re-read Odin's FAQ linked in the EG article and now I'm really melancholic. Turn-based combat system, in Fallout setting, placed on hex-grid, with features like this:
The moves could be split into these groups: hand attacks, hand combos, foot attacks, foot combos and hand-foot combos. For example, the character could have Jab, Cross, Uppercut, Elbow Smash, Backhand, Sucker Punch, Spearhand, and Ridgehand as standard hand attacks, each with their own AP cost, bonus or penalty to hit, DT modifier, and damage. However, the character could also gain "two-in-one" combos.

For instance, Jab-Elbow. The combo would do both moves, each at a different hex. The Jab would go into the targeted hex, and the Elbow Smash would go into the hex back and to the right. The combo would cost less AP than both moves individually, but it would be at a lower chance to hit with each attack, and would incur a fatigue cost. Another combo might be Cross-Backhand-Ridgehand, hitting the first hex targeted, the hex to the right, and the hex two more to the right.
What a great game with excellent replay value thanks to its mechanics could have it been!

Only if they don't mind getting sued to hell and back by Bethesda...

Wouldn't it be nice if game companies that make the same game (same series, at least) could work together to spit out something polished?
I'd happily go into Tranquility Lane if they had a game like that I could play while my body rots away

While its too early to make anything of this, I am generally happy about what we may see down the road in a year or two.

Sadly, this. ^

Not to mention, Bethesda WILL totally do it. Some companies will file lawsuits because the crappy way the legal system is design quite literally forces them to preemptively "defend" their copyrights and licenses. But Bethesda does it because they want to own it all, and fuck all the rest. Those who don't remember what they did to Interplay... because I don't wanna repeat it all and you can google it... we've seen what they're willing to do with the legal system at their disposal. The chances of ANYONE making a prequel or sequel to the FO series while it's in their clutches and without their "good graces" is zero percent.

Anything they could make in the genre would BE Fallout 3, the same way that Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos is effectively "Eye of the Beholder 3"; despite there being an official EoB3.

It doesn't matter if they use nothing of the Fallout IP; that's their old work, and they know the formula, and how to improve upon it. Bethesda is stuck with just the original pot of sauce, and they are already scraping the bottom of the bowl for what remains of it. They cannot make any more of it; it's garnish on the plate now as it is.

I'm not sure I have that much faith in Inxile pulling this off anyway. Many of the ideas were already used for New Vegas, they can't use any Fallout related stuff...what would be the point? Wasteland 2 didn't impress me as far as writing goes, so I'm not sure I could expect Fallout 1 and 2 quality dialog either.

Well, they can always just give Ghouls another name, include the Dam Troglodites, change the NCR to some other "Postapocalyptic organized society", etc.

Many of the ideas in Van Buren where used for New vegas, true, but they were also reworked heavily, they have some common themes and locations but as far as tone and plot they are night and day, hell even the Legion was different and there was no Mr House.

I think Circle Junction would be a great location to use. I just find it strange that they would want to recycle an old Fallout concept just to get attention from fans of the original. Why not create a new series with new ideas?

THey probably are looking to cash in on dissapointed fans of the older games after FO4's E3 conference. Maybe they are watching us....

I thought that was the point of Wasteland 2. I'm still waiting for it to get to the state it should have been.

Never Played Wasteland 1 nor 2, what is wrong with the new one? I have heard very positive things about it but I am kind of out of the loop with that one.

For me... it is that WL2 is about as close to a real Fallout 3 as can be hoped for in this mess caused by Interplay with their shameful sale of the IP to Bethesda. (Why is that bad? because it doesn't play like a Wasteland 2, it plays more like a FO2/FO:Tactics clone than a Wasteland sequel.)

Are you referring to the entire Fallout MMO thing with Interplay? I thought that was supposed to be a good thing.
That said, I agree, I'm thinking ZeniMax has some good lawyers and they're always trying to find ways of suing people or cheating them out of their money. From what I remember, there are some very big names on the board of ZeniMax, so this isn't really surprising really.
To be the Devil's Advocate for a time, however... What company would even let another just use their IP without their permission? Isn't it common sense that you have to ask for permission from the people that own the franchise to use it in any way possible?

More on topic, I'm not falling for Fargo's bullshit again, Avellone or no. Wasteland 2 was hyped to be "awsum best RPG evar 99999/10" or, at the very least, more like a Fallout 1 with better combat. All I got was people telling me that the game gets better when you hit LA, then I get there and it actually got worse. I couldn't even finish it.
