Rock Paper Shotgun said:
Bethesda, developers of Elder Scrolls and Fallout and publishers of Dishonored, Doom, Wolfenstein and more, say that their policy now is to send out “media review copies” one day before their games come out. That’s what they did with DOOM earlier this year and that’s what they intend to do with the approaching releases of both Skyrim Special Edition and Dishonored 2.

Traditionally, when a company holds back review code it’s because they know that the game they’re releasing has flaws and they want to delay the low scores of reviews til as late as possible. At the very least they want to withhold information from consumers until after the release of the game so that those who pre-ordered don’t have a chance to cancel those pre-orders.

To be clear, I don’t think the quality of Bethesda’s games is the issue here. By all accounts, DOOM is good. Wolfenstein: The New Order was good. I loved Dishonored and everything we’ve seen of Dishonored 2 so far has been promising. Fallout 4 released with plenty of bugs, as the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series seem to do, but was still beloved by many, is still being played by tens of thousands right now on Steam, and was supported post-release by the developers with plenty of bug-fixing updates.

But I don’t think any of this matters. Because as noted above this is fundamentally a statement by Bethesda that they want their consumers to be less informed for longer when they make purchasing decisions. It’s also emblematic of an industry that wants to control the flow of information for themselves for longer. Companies do this either by handpicking and sometimes paying the “influencers” they want to work with, or by hiring their own writers and journalists (the review policy post is written by Gary Steinman, former editor of PC Gamer US) and streamers to talk about their games in the way they want them talked about.

Bethesda’s games might have been good of late, but that doesn’t mean they won’t release another Elder Scrolls Online, another Wet, another Rogue Warrior. It doesn’t mean that their currently strong series’ won’t misfire.

I hope it’s clear why the information that Bethesda release officially – even when it’s livestreams done in partnership with media outlets as per those happening today and tomorrow with Twitch, IGN, GameSpot and PC Gamer – is less trustworthy than a review, because Bethesda will choose what parts of the game they show. These livestreams, like game trailers, exist primarily to sell the game and not to inform you about the quality of the game, and make the press – ourselves included – complicit in the marketing of games.

Just to point out a few of more important(or at least i believe it is) parts to read, to get the full story i suggest you check the link.

Guess they believe they can do everything they want as long those Bethdroids out there still believe Todd is their lord and savior, i wish people who still having common sense will start to thinking about how bad it can be.

Woow. Yeah I'm not trusting them ever again even with published games.
Their fans must be the "he beats me becouse he loves me" domestic violence type equivalent already. Not only their fans, but the consumer. They are only money bags with legs now for good old Bethesda

That is some anti-consumer behaviour right there. That kind of policy indicates the lack of confidence Bethesda has in their games until they require consumers to have minimal knowledge or impressions of their games. This line here is just wrong and Bethesda ought to be called out for even saying something like this:
While we will continue to work with media, streamers, and YouTubers to support their coverage – both before and after release – we want everyone, including those in the media, to experience our games at the same time.
That is disingenuous of Bethesda to claim that they are creating a level playing field when in reality they are encouraging a lack of impressions and detailed insight on any game of theirs (plus the RPS article pointed out Bethesda's hypocrisy: that Bethesda already gave out early copies of Skyrim SE to certain Youtubers despite their 'policy').

Good on RPS for calling out Bethesda on their anti-consumer bullshit right there.

Also, some of the comments on that article are so... cringe-worthy in terms of Bethesda apologist behaviour. I'm wondering how on Earth do people come up with arguments defending anti-consumer behaviour. Heck, compare 2K Games that, while often having pre-order DLC bullshit attached to their games, are more willing to release review copies long before a game's official release. That is acceptable consumer behaviour (though they really have to stop with pre-order DLC bullshit regardless).

EDIT: Here's the link to Bethesda new review 'policy'. Feel free to tear it to shreds:

Well after Fallout 4 it seems doing this was imminent. They should change it from a day in advance to two hours so that way there isn't enough time for people to see how terrible the game really is until after the game is released and they collect their money.

Fallout 4 released with plenty of bugs, as the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series seem to do, but was still beloved by many

Fucking what? Yeah right loved by many, this hollow shell of a game.

Add another brick to bethesda's grave. I hope people tear them apart but unfortunately apologists will defend everything, even being raped by Emil or Todd because "it gives them inspiration".

Brain Dead Idiots

take with grain of salt to every AAA company that stop hyping their games. it could be sign of cut content and half assing so there's not much material to spoiled as hype device (look at Mankind divided for example)

Not to be a complete asshole, but,

They still haven't given Bethesda a score for Fallout 4, games been out a while, this one day test wouldn't have mattered for Fallout 4, why should it matter to other games.
Game reviewers are no longer treated with respect by Bethesda, boo hoo. If you don't know to be wary about buying a Bethesda game, watching the shitheads lie about 10/10 IGN greatest game eva isn't making matters better or worse.

Fuck the devs, fuck the reviews, fuck the fans and fuck the franchise for that matter.

So now the "journalists" have less time to brag at all the parties about the advance copies of the games they've gotten while putting the finishing touches on their pre-written "reviews" which all say, "10/10, a near perfect video game!!!"

Boo fucking hoo.

Eh? There are no scores on any of RPS's reviews.

The single day can matter quite a lot. Say a game is as borked as something like Batman Arkham Knight for PC or Assassins Creed Unity and those kind of cases. Then a single day could mean the consumers who pre-ordered cannot cancel it in time, either due to getting physical copies which have already left the warehouse or just not hearing about how shitty it is in time to cancel. Takes time for people to play enough to know it is completely broken all the way through, and the scuttlebutt takes some time to get around besides that.

Imagine if everything worked like the game industry.
Like if you want to invest money.
Or buying a house.
Or making a contract for an insurance.

What do you complain about! You had one day to decide!

Companies try to screw people all the time, nothing novell about hat. But, gaming companies have a few properties that work in their favour. 1. Gamers don't care, not enough. When was the last time a lot of people sued a gaming company for bugged games? 2. Hype. It really is incredible how easy people can be manipulated when it comes to entertainment products. YOu make a car that kills people, and well, someone will care about it. But games? Or movies? Who cares! It's just entertainment.

I'd like to agree with what you're saying, but reviewers are all in dev pockets, tiptoeing around truths.

Out of all those professional reviews, those "Broken games" you mentioned still got an average of 70 out of 100. Those reviews are nothing more that lining the pockets of the developers with lies. When you look at the user review counts for those games they are mostly accurate.
Batman Arkham Knight : 2.5 out of 10
Assassins Creed Unity : 3.0 out of 10

If reviewers were honest and did as journalists do, reporting fact from a non- objective point of view I would agree with you 100% Sadly they are no better then the shit game makes. One scratches the others back. At least now that the reviewers feel like they have been wronged, perhaps the reviews will be a bit more honest.

Bethesda is now a cash grab company, reviewers are developer ass kissers so that they can get paid. Now they are all streamlined. And honestly, if someone didn't know BAK was unplayable at this point, they should loose money for living under a rock.

Under ordinary circumstances I'd agree, but it's not like we could trust these clowns in games "journalism" to tell us about buggy, broken or just plain bad games anyway, even if they had all the time in the world to play them before release.

It doesn't matter how badly Bethesda treats them - in the end, RPS, IGN and all of the rest of them will just continue to suck Todd Howard's dick anyway.

Not that they really want so, at least heterosexual part of the journalists. It's either this or no materail to work with, Bethesda just won't send the review copies of their games to the 'honest' reviewers. (or published by them)

Might be a little derailing but what happened to Bethesda around the point of Fallout 4? Before then one could argue that they wanted to do things right by the fans and that they wanted to produce games just that they had poor management and prioritized the wrong way. But with Fallout 4 it's like they've been hit with a magic retard stick.

Pre-Fallout 4: Skyrim mods can now be sold on Steam! Except we'll take most of the money cause fuck you. Oh that didn't work out? Aw...

Fallout 4 - Let's completely ruin the game and not even pretend to give a shit about anything anymore. Let's just copy whatever else is popular out there because we are creatively bancrupt. And let's even halfass it so that the crap we 'do' produce isn't even good in any way. But before we release it:

Pre-order - Let's allow people to pre-order the game right after its official announcement cause people hyped yo! Let's coax the dullards into giving us more cheese! And while we're at it:

Pre-order season pass - Let's put out a season pass out of all things because that's necessary as fuck yo. And let's allow the "fans" pre-order it too so that they can give us even MORE cashmoney whoop whoop! But hey... >_> This game kind of uh... Sucks. *Pete Hines walks in* Yeah I don't wanna sit through our dialogue it fucking sucks. Yeah... So let's uh...:

Censoring Information - Let's show as little of the game as possible cause, well... "But what about the big gaming events when we have to show the gameplay" Euuh... We'll.. We'll confiscate their camera devices so that no information is leaked out!

Season Pass - Well, we're glad you're enjoying the game so what we're going to do is that we're going to hike the price up because we plan on making more DLC's!

DLC's - What the hell are we gonna do? Let's just take base assets that modders already unlocked for the settlement crafting and sell those to players. Brilliant! Oh and writing quests is difficult so let's just steal a modders quest.

Forums - Fuck the old forums, we need a mobile friendly look so let's start up Bethesda.net.

Bethesda.net mods - Oh gee, I guess fans are taking other people's mods and uploading them without their permission so that they can be available on the consoles. Whoopsie!

Pete Hines - Not interested in talking about [insert topic of the day here] in a game with talking mutants and ghouls.

Skyrim re-release - We need more money... Let's just repackage Skyrim and sell it for full price with mod support.

Playstation fuckery - Except for Playstation, they're kind of unreasonable so let's just allow esp's on that version.

And now this thing about review copies.
I mean, what happened?
Bethesda weren't necessarily 'bad', just a bit incompetent but the future for them wasn't grim or anything. And after the skyrim paid mods on Steam they turned full retard.

I don't get this at all.
I love it cause I get to shit on Bethesda even more.
But I don't understand why Bethesda seems to 'want' to fuck themselves over.
Or are they just trying to see how far they can push people without going overboard?
