The music in Saving Private Ryan is used so sparingly, so subtly - I thought the movie had no score, for the longest time May 30, 2023 at 9:26 PM

Every commander of a major war must contend with unforeseen elements. Battered morale and general incompetence, I bet was foreseen by Putin

I imagine Commodus in Gladiator, Putin gasping and sobbing to his generals, "And now they love Zelenskyy for his bravery. So I can't just kill him, or it makes me even more unmerciful! The whole thing's like some crazed nightmare."

The rampant incompetence of Russia on this is kinda appaling.... Are they baiting for something worse or has Putin really gone that smoothbrained from being surrounded by Yes men for so long?

I think it's practicality. The US has an image to uphold, democracy to maintain - public opinion matters to democracies, because leaders and parties will lose their shot if they fuck up too hard. Russia has the luxury of not giving a shit about that, and can conduct warfare much more wrecklessly.

Chechen war was a meat-grinder. I remember Google Earth featured visible flames scattered around Grozny for a long time, until images were updated.

Woke up to the centrists bots trying to make the stuff in Ukraine the fault of the leftwing candidate. That level of brain damage on the lead up to elections is usually a good thing for a candidate, isn't it?

Rus v Ukr is a geopolitical standoff as old as the khanates, I always cringe when I see simplistic takes like "this is his or her fault, they are too corrupt or lame or power-hungry"

The world is full of frozen conflicts, like the Berlin-Paris rivalry that is kept in check through EU and NATO partnership. If that goes away, back come the wars, and Americans will be talking about Biden or Tucker Carlson.

"Min herre, jeg skulle gjerne kjøpt en ørret, takk."

We don't have "sir" in Norwegian, so you'll have to call people "my lord" or just skip it entirely.
Girlfriend works in a restaurant in the city, and they are always super bemused whenever once a year American troops swarm the place, and call everybody "sir" and "ma'am"

Honestly, I think they're just hammered by the realization their living loved one is no longer living, and so soon after, there's too many intricate personality traits to pick from, so they all land on "loved to live". Watched some court thingy, where lke 3 relatives in succession described the deceased as "loved to live", despite the person seeming interested in a bunch of specific stuff.

But US and Russia are both the type that by their own nature, by now, cannot permit any sort of significant change, because the path chosen is by now too deeply intrenched. Too many people of too substancial means depend too greatly on the system not only persisting, but intensifying.

We boast about having so much biodiversity and farmers are still doing their thing in the mud with no roads or infrastructure yet we also shackled them with having to respect Monsanto's rules on agraculture so no reusing seed, we destroy surplus crops and their stock is bought for cheap. It's so stupid, it's not even capitalism it's just a couple of families hoarding money the dumbest way possible.

I have them off, because I *loathe* the idea of having Google try to get to know me, and try to personalize my internet - it sounds like a fucking nightmare - but it DOES cause some confusion in Google's results - including quirks that seem utterly random, like Hindu-focused search results and such.

What I MEANT to find out was: It seems there is a consensus of 3000-5000 words being "adequate" chapter length, with 5000+ being overall considered too much, while nearly all my chapters are betwen 5 and 10K words. NONE are 100 pages long :'D
