5 new gameplay videos

It was either the Sheriff's bad voice actor or his lack of facial expressions that made his swearing just seem so forced, like something out of a bad movie.

Ghoul's wasn't too bad though I thought he did get stuck on a loop from all that swearing.

I thought the game looked pretty decent.

Didn't the guy over the intercom keep talking because he had no way to know that the ghoul blew up, because the ghoul took his finger off of the intercom button to check his pockets before blowing up?

Burke wasn't so bad, was he? I thought be conveyed the feeling of a proud evil like he was supposed to.

I didn't think this game looked silly, but I don't think it feels like the old Fallout I know and love, either.

It fits in real life with what an average man would find as teh average day to day dialogue.

Fallout isn't based on real life. This is not about how realistic all this swearing is, but about how coherent it is within the game's setting. The whole of the original's dialogue and writing didn't come even close to how much cursing a couple of Fallout 3 demos and screenshots has shown, and so excessive it is..

This yes, I could agree with. But that cursing shows a primitive mind etc I don't. If so 95% of people have a primitive mind while the goody good people who don't swear are the normal folks...not.

*Megaton explodes.*

COMPLETED: Investigate the nearby town of Megaton for information about Dad.

....WTF? Bethesda, subscribing to the egofellatic school of design. Never tell the player they've failed, and just keep hoping they don't notice how shitty the game really is.

Just curious where you got the 95% stat of people who speak like the Sheriff in FO3.

Sources please.

Seriously, the only people who speak like that idiot in Fo3 are inner city youth with primitive minds, or truckers.

You need to find some new people to hang out with.

You didn't fail the quest; you gathered information which led to Mr. Burke which led to a different path of completing the game. Quest completed.

Or normal people as cursing is often combined with emotion and everyone has emotions.

EDIT: When Howard talked to the sheriff in the public demo he says "Oh yeah we're no longer banned in Australia."

Everyone cheered. I facepalmed.

Well I made that % up innit, but erm everyone swears. You either never swear, which is highly unlikely or you don't live in an area with much people in.

Swearing is like, expressing your emotions. They're just like any other regular word, as I said, some people decide to taboo it and make it look bad.

His voice tried to convey that feeling. His face and body language conveyed absolutely nothing. No facial animations whatsoever and his only body language were his trembling forearms. It made the entire scene quite absurd.

Compare this to Aradesh or Loxley when they were talking to the Vault Dweller. Anger them and see what happens. You immediately get the idea that something went wrong.

That, my dear grashopper, were but for the technical limitations of Fallout 1.

I don't think the issue is so much the absence or presence of cussing. It's the sentiment and quality of writing behind it.
Swearing for it's own sake, or the sake of seeming edgy, in lieu of mature thematic content is sophomoric. It's the content that makes something mature or not, not using "big kid words".

Using swears to overcompensate for lack of gritty dialogue is low rent.

Who knows. Maybe the sheriff picked up a bad case of mudcrabs from one of those hookers. Maybe that's why he's angry.

Some might say there was allot of swearing Fallout 1.

But that is no excuse to have everybody do a Dr.Fung impersonation.

Tactics for sure fell into this morass of thinking that f-bombs alone qualify as mature writing, but not backing it up with any substance. I remember infiltrating some raider base, and after tripping the alarm, the raider chief goes off on a tirad, you just had to roll your eyes. It was just lame.

Well I just watched that Megaton video again. The sheriff just says "Fuck" two times. The barkeeper says "Fucking" once, and "Son of a Bitch". And the lady at the inn said "The signal's been shit lately".

I'll be very honest, how is that excessive? Doesn't seem excessive at all!

I don't have a problem with their use of cuss words but everything else...do I really have to say it?? It looks like Oblivion. From the zooming in to the bad dialog to the lack of dialog choices, it's Oblivion over and over again. And I really dislike the zooming effect when you talk to an NPC, it takes me right out of the game. The guy you get the Megaton quest from is an Imperial Guard if you couldn't tell. ;)

Considering most people here hated Oblivion I doubt they recognize the voices, if they even played the game :P

Lucien Lachance, moreso. Same guy, though.

Same character type, same sort of dialogue...

It's not auto attempt, it's forcing the lock, like trying to bash the lock. But if you fail you can't bash it again.

That's all I know from the previews.
Where did you read or see this? I've been keeping up to date and the only thing that ever mentioned bashing/breaking locks was the G4 interview in which Todd explicitly said that you couldn't.

The Sheriff's swearing was extremely forced and completely unnecessary. I don't care if he said fuck one time or fifty, it was poorly written dialogue with f-bombs thrown in for the sake of it.

EDIT: Also out of the four lines said (one when he walked up to you, one when you first got into a conversation with him, and two responses), he dropped the f-bomb in two (when you first talk to him and the second response). We didn't hear him say much but he swore in half of his lines and it sounded forced in both instances.

Gstaff said it on the forums. I'll try and find the quote and link later on today.

Well, I finally created an account, after lurking since mid- 1998.

It was these five gameplay videos that pushed me into making my account; they look flat out sensational. Unlike a lot of other posters, I adore the selection of music. I'm sure you can toggle your radio on and off, and when it couldn't be heard in the demo, the non- diagetic sound, especially in the town of Megaton, was extremely well done, very remenisce of the original Fallout games. As for the other stuff, i'm a sucker for the old 50s sounds anyway, and it reminded me of The Inkblots intro score from Fallout 2. A good thing.

One post in particular caught my attention: Brother None's. Well balanced views and whatnot, but I thought the ghoul's voice was just fine. The voice acting on the whole I felt was far superior to Oblivion's. Also, the lack of a reaction to the ghoul blowing up was due to the fact that the guard wasn't standing on the other side of the wall. It was an intercom, and therefore, the guard would've been some 500 feet away, inside the building. Also, the explosion happened whilst the guard was talking, and the ghouls hands were scrabbling around on his own body to locate the grenade, so his finger was not pressed on the intercom, making the explosion go unnoticed to all but the player, and the unfortunate recipient.

Overall, an incredible first impression for me. I'm looking forward to this more than I have any other game for years.
