After the ending... What is there to do?

Mr Fish ...The pain of being dead...

So, I finished the game. I broke it completely with the use of mods and upping my levels through console commands because fuck it, I wanted some more levels. Difficulty was thrown out the window as I didn't want to constantly tweak my health because it reset all the time. So I pushed through the main story, finally, and sided with the Railroad. I went to the hole in the ground. It's a nice hole. Got some rads swimming in it. Talked to some of the companions to see their reactions. Preston was a cunt, the others were cool. Strong disappeared.

    ...

    What now?

I mean, what was the point of allowing post-ending continuation at all if there is absolutely fuck all to do? Apart from generic repeatable quests is there anything at all?

The point was to satisfy all the people who believe that New Vegas shouldn't have an ending, which is actually a big part of the community.

Well they got what they wanted. Now what? *sigh* If they just released their mod kit at least then I could look forward to porn mods or something. But this just feels pointless. Great, I can now roam around a wasteland full of bugger all to do. I guess I still have that kid in a fridge to go and save...

A big part of the Bethesda community that is. I mean look how amazing Skyrim's and Fallout 4 endings were. It was so amazing to continue to piss around with radiant quest that had fuck all to do with anything and an ending where there was no closure in contrast to New Vegas awful multiple endings that talked about the choices you made and the consequences they had on the factions and characters you interacted with. Soooo stupid! Fallout 4 for the win! /sarc/ :V

You can make an ending that shows consequences too. There was a mod for NV that allows post ending gameplay with the faction you sided with in control of the mojave, but it got taken off for some reason...

Theres no excuse for Bethesda dropping the ball here but DLC bait

To be fair, making an ending that shows consequences in a way that isn't shallow is pretty hard considering to which extent you can influence the world in Fallout (I'm basing myself on the old ones since I haven't played Fallout 4).

I think the ideal solution is to do it like Fallout 2. Show the consequences of the player's actions through ending slides, give them a message that anything that happens from now on is non-canon and let them do what they want in the world.

Well, the slides could just say what happens ten years after the ending and on, yet drop the player off immediately after the ending, have the immediate effect be that factions you supported are more prevalent and certain side quests are shut off depending on your choices...

That way you can show some consequences, and it isnt shallow because you know the bigger effects shown in the slides come later, they couldve done that with Fallout 4 but no, they stuck with some forced tried-to-be emotional bullshit.

It's bad when games developed by one man have better stories than AAA games.

The funny thing for me is that I was happy with the idea of not having a proper ending, right up until I played the game. Continuing to play after the story was done sounded to me like a good idea, but all it did was make the thing ring hollow. Worse than the lack of things to do was the degree to which your choice of factions totally failed to influence *anything,* including the remaining factions. "God you're an asshole, how could you?! Oh, there's still more tech to find, can you fetch this haptic drive from the Super Duper Mart?" It was really disappointing. And lazy. Why in the name of whomever can't the dialogue on the radiants change after the ending?

Oddly enough, I loved Skyrim for some of the same reasons I'm not thrilled with FO4. Changing tastes, I suppose. And I think some of these things worked better for me in a different context.

It's sort of funny. New Vegas can't continue after the end, because the game assumes that you care about the setting and the characters so it tells you what happens to the people and the places in the years to come and this is assumed to mean more to you than "you can kill as many Fiends and Cazadors as you like." So you play to finish the various stories and once the stories are over, so is the game.

Skyrim and Fallout 4 take basically the opposite approach. There's virtually nothing there to care about, but there's an endless supply of settlements that need your help. You play pretty much until you get exhausted of playing and then you do something else instead.

I can't say that it's wrong to enjoy the latter approach, but it's something I just don't understand the appeal of.

Agreed, though I still prefer the actual endings idea, it sums up the game really well.

Well you could do what all those FO4 players do after moving on from Pornhub by downloading the nude and pregnancy mods, because that's what Fallout is definitely known for. Not good writing, those consequence things, or anything like that.

I will say Fallout 4 is the one of the greatest Minecraft patch updates I've seen in years.

    Great job, Notch.

Nah, Notch makes simplistic yet fun masterpieces. Bethesda sure scores a hit with simplistic... but none of the other criteria.

I've never played minecraft, but my son does and he says you have to eat and sleep, so already a better hardcore mode.

I hardly play it but whenever I speak of it most people praise it, and when I do play it I find it quite fun and it does what it sets out to do well.

It's been two years since I played it, but Dr Fallout is right----it has a simplistic foundation but it's fun. And it does have a "hardcore mode", and limited inventory (not lugging 2000000 pounds of scrap and salvage with you, with minor movement restrictions).

Furthermore, the settlement building has infinitely more options than just concrete blocks or glitchy metal walls. Plus, some of the downloadable campaigns have more complexity and depth than Fallout 4's story, though that isn't saying much.

Nothing else to do you say? Why not build a city in the sky?

Yeah but seriously you're better off with the uninstall.exe option unless you wait for the Gamebyro Kit to be released so we can get some of those super realistic naked women mods, now with animal ears and tail!
