Actually, thats what most of intellectuals are trying to do for the last 2 centuries: secularization.

They're being quite successful until now, considering the time that would take.
 
It doesn't have much to do with secularism, it's all about being a consumerist society. The root of the problem goes back to just after WWII when the government was encouraging everyone to buy a bunch of shit in order to fuel the economy. Businesses picked up on it and ran with it and the baby boomers were fully engrossed in it.
