An analogy for the "mods 'll fix it" argument

Let's say I buy a factory-new automobile. Straight off the assembly line.
To my intense displeasure and dismay, the vehicle to lacking many critical components and parts.
The components that are there are deficient and unusable. Thus, I am forced to gut the whole entire thing.

Leaving me with just a pretty paint job, yet no substance or enjoyability.

Fallout 4 is like ordering a pizza and the delivery guy brings you nothing but a pizza crust in a box. All the toppings you love, the cheese and the sauce are no where to be found.. you just have the crust to eat.

You call the place you ordered it from and they tell you that they're closing soon but will give you a free pizza tomorrow. Problem is you're hungry today and all you have is that damned pizza crust, some ketchup in the fridge and some Kraft cheese singles.

Making the best of a horrible situation, you put together a sloppy home made pizza with all the ingredients you have plus the crust you got and bake it for ten minutes. It is the most underwhelming thing you have ever eaten in your life, but at least you got a little sustenance from it..

Am I doing it right?

PS: The next day you call the pizza place for that free pizza they promised and apparently they've no recollection of ever promising you that and promptly hang up on you. :(

You take a look at a new house for sale that you are in love with, the representative shows you around to see if it's what you want, as you walk out and look next door to the house you see an abandoned decrepit house with broken windows covered with 2x4s with a porch sinking in the middle and you think "I'm glad I'm not buying that house.". So moving day comes and you are ready to move in but then the representative calls back and tells you you actually paid off the house next door...the old decrepit house next door...they were off by a number and due to bad luck can't do anything about it.
They tell you that for a couple grand they can spruce it up for you.
To make things worse you haven't payed for the rent that month at the current place you are living in because you thought you were going to be moving out...

Sorry I'm not the best at analogies.

It's like buying new pillow, but the pillow has only half the stuffing in it and you can't buy any stuffing from any other stores. Instead, you just start cramming soft stuff into the pillow case, until you have something that sort of represents a full pillow. When you finally try to sleep on that pillow, it's very lumpy, and still isn't as good as a pillow full of the original stuffing.

This is how computers themselves used to be sold.

Fallout 4 is like ordering a steak and they walk a cow up to your table and tell you to ask your fellow diners to make it for you, all while charging full price.
My sides :lmao:

...and that's why buying the components and building it yourself is the best option.

It's like buying a new Fallout game but then you discover that someone put a Borderlands disc on the package instead.
That is...a surprisingly and unfortunately accurate statement regarding how I felt the first day playing F4 and continue to feel.

Mods will fix this "mods'll fix it" argument.

Paid mods will fix it.

I would say you buy a really big house that is called a Luxurian Palace. In fact you are buying a really huge swamp, with some foundations on it, some plans for the building, that were made by another guy that won't get royalties for architecture plan. Using those plan, you call buddies to help you to build the Palace, after you dried up the swamp. Then, once the Palace is built, the guy who sold you the swamp and the plan will ask you additionnal money for building something using the swamp and the architecture plan they sold you. You only paid for the ground and the plan, not for the right of using them. Then, they take a picture of the Palace you built and use it as commercial material to sell new swamps. Of course, they have exclusive right for those pictures. If you want to share pictures of your house, you have to pay them.

Mods are awesome but if the game is boring broken or not very fun out of the box then what's the point of buying it when you have to wait years for the modders to clean up the developers mess.

Those were dark times.

Great analogy but who actually buys physical copies of PC games anymore?
