Anime

Not much of a anime person myself as im more into some more realistic manga, but ive enjoyed allmost all of studio ghiblis stuff, yeah also cowboy bepop, new Hellsing and Read or die ova were pretty good stuff. I never really liked that much of akira, i think its a bit overrated but such are the ways of taste and opinions...

Oh yeah and Monster, i think that really rocks.

I usually just need to watch one episode to see if it`s worth it, my fav`s so far:

Texhnolyze
Cowboy Bebop
Gungrave

No one like Hellsing? Damn. I liked the old series (not OVA that is), though it was a bit silly (on the other hand, which anime isn't?). I don't watch anime frankly, so my two favs are Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop.

ah right. there was a good 4-part OVA of kenshin; nice story, and much better artwork than the series. the series was way too cartoonish. it would have been great if it focussed more on the dystopic elements (a millennia-old empire on the verge of revolution/extinction, the aftermath, destruction of traditions etc).

Recently i saw The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya a really funny series about a girl who, unknown to her, possesses the power to change reality and she thinks that the world around her is really boring.

Also a hint to anyone who is interested in watching anime and has a limited experience with them, never, never NEVER watch anime with english language only jwith ap sound and subtitles. Although there are few films with decent dub every series I watched including Cowboy Bebop and GITS SOC have awful dub(those two are considered to have a great dub by some).

Anime is pretty hit or miss for me. I loved Cowboy Bebop, the first Ghost in The Shell movie, and Akira though. I liked what I've seen of Samurai Champloo as well.

I recently watched a 26 episode series based on a manga called Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad. Simple character animation, and ridiculously cheesy and emo at times, but I loved it nonetheless. A story about a 14 year old discovering music and joining a band. Great musical satire at times, and some of the songs in the show are actually not half bad. I guess a dubbed version was released in the states, I saw a video of one of the songs and it was fucking gross. It loses most of it's charm without the Engrish lyrics. You might need to be a musician to get into that one though, probably not for everyone.

Also if you ever want to get incredibly fucked up with some anime nerds, grab a couple bottles of whiskey and play the Akira drinking game: You take a shot everytime someone screams a name.

"Kaneda!"
"Tetsuo!"
"Kaneda!"
"Tetsuo!"
"Kaneda!"
:vomit:

Ghost in the Shell (mainly for sentimental value though)
MONSTER
Nausicaä
Infinite Ryvius
Wings of Honneamise
Kumo no mukou, yakusoku no basho
Boogiepop Phantom
Seikai no monshou
Azumanga Daioh
Dennou Coil
Cowboy Bebop
Otogizoushi
Mushishi
Piano no mori
Grave of the Fireflies
Perfect Blue
Last Exile
NHK ni youkoso!
Death Note
Eureka 7
Kaiba
...

sadly, your avatar file name gave no hint whatever where it was taken from. its so absurd... i like it. what is it?

alsoplustoo, why are they hatin' gits? i love that distanced way of telling the "story", it is the perfect way to tell a story in such a dystopian environment. imho.

Akira
Cowboy Bebop (Great soundtrack, cool characters, good finale.
Outlaw Star
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Niea Under 7
Naruto (Watched it for a long time, before cartoon network really fucked it, makes nice yaoi)
Lupin The 3rd (Love the characters, usually get a good laugh, neat animation)
Afro Samurai (Samuel L. Jackson as a samurai out for revenge, good enough for me)
Samurai Champloo (Nice soundtrack, like the style of animation, good story)
FLCL (Just weird crazy entertainment)
Berserk (Dying for Miura to make another season after the manga's finished)

You talking to me? That would be Dennou Coil. It's a kids' show really, but it's slightly phenomenal. Best anime of 2007 in my humble opinion (ha, let the flame wars begin).

How come none of you guys have mentioned Perfect Blue. The best Anime-Thriller ever made!

That one was f'ing freaky. Watched it for my anime class last year. Pretty well-done, but not favourite tbh.

I thought that the creators of the original Hellsing didn't do as good a job as they could with the kind of material they had. It was too short, and they abandoned a lot of side-stories halfway through. I thought the cop vampire-girl had a lot of story potential that was not developed. I like Trinity Blood much better than Hellsing (well, until the last story arc about Cain, anyway).

Can anyone recommend a good 2008 anime.

Depends on your preferences really. Personally, I'd recommend Shigofumi and Kurozuka, as well as the second season of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (and first if you haven't seen it, but it's from 2007). If you liked Haruhi, you might also enjoy Toradora! If you're looking for a place to get 'em try getfnsub.com or Fansub.tv

Ah, I love that show. Definitely the best drama of the year, but Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei as a comedy is still my overall favourite. Densuke was awesome though ;) The "Boku, Satchi"was pretty annoying though

I wouldn't say it's a show for kids, it's too serious and deep, it's a show ABOUT kids, but hey, so is Sky Crawlers (damn, I wanna get my hands on that.)

Series:
- Ghost in the Shell SAC and SAC 2nd Gig (loved 'em both)
- Full Metal Alchemist
- Full Metal Panic 1 & 2 + Fumoffu (it was...amusing)
- Last Exile (pretty anime. interesting premise)
- Gasaraki (didn't like the 'mystical' elements...but I enjoyed the mecha action)
- Gundam 8th MS Team
- Armored Trooper Votoms (almost halfway through the original... Pailsen Files was nice, tho')
- Area 88 (new and old. I liked the premise...both could've been much longer)

OAV/Movies:
- Jin-roh (awesome film. I'm still pestering folks for a protect gear mod for FO3  )
- All 3 Ghost in the Shell movies (loved the visuals for Innocence, esp. that massive church-like structure they saw from the air, but which had statues of what i think were chinese gods)
- Akira
- Shiro no Laputa
- Nausicaa
- Spirited Away
- Dominion and New Dominion Tank Police (for laughs. I'm a Shirow fan)
- Perfect Blue (got reminded of this one from the above posters. I liked the twist)
- FMA: Conqueror of Shamballa (I found the entire series + this movie ultimately depressing, tho')

I'm sure I've managed to forget a few...
Waiting for: the next step in the Kerberos Saga and the next Ghost in the Shell thingy

Well, you HAVE seen the GITS:SAC Solid State Society, haven't you? It's not on your list... If not, you're missing out.

If you like mindgame/gambling (think Akagi) anime I'd recommend One Outs. Yes, yes I know it's a sports anime, but it's not as ridiculous as Prince of Tennis.

I've seen it (it's on the list as 'the 3 GitS movies').
I'm actually going to watch it again after re-watching the entire 2nd Gig (again...)

Any new good cyberpunk anime?
