Anyone ever feel Disconnected to other Gamers?

1magus

First time out of the vault
I'm curious to know, because lately I almost always feel this way. There are few exceptions, like when I was watching Bethesda's conference, but even then it would seem that I am still not on the same page as Fallout 1 and 2 fans. I felt excited for everything they showed us, especially for four, but I still feel odd.

Let me back up, though. It almost always seems like I am either two steps behind others, in regards to other games or two steps to the side. I was never out in front and with the other crowds, though, often I could be found there. When Fallout 3 was first revealed and that hype train was steaming along I decided to check out its origins. I figured Fallout and Fallout 2 deserved my attention and boy was I glad I found them. From the moment I laid eyes on those two games I was in love. I still feel the art style is something you can't match if you tried and anyone who says those games are ugly can eat my ass. But this was going two steps back. Plenty of the fans on these forums I'm sure were into these games at launch, when they were new. I always fall late into the game, so to speak. When I was a kid I was into games, but I didn't read every magazine or try and find out everything about them. I didn't start that until the PlayStation 3 was announced. As a result there are tons of things I never got into until much later in my life. Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, N64 just to name a few. PC games in general I wasn't into until much later. I played them, sure, but I didn't own my own "rig" until I was in high school.

Watching the footage for Fallout 4, I couldn't help but be excited but also a bit scared. I saw a character delivering dialogue which can easily restrict the dialogue choices you get in the game. I saw your character limited to four choices mapped to four buttons that mean nothing on a PC. I saw no vehicles... which okay. I saw a game quite possibly taking itself too seriously to be anywhere close to Dark Comedy (it was a nice touch, Bethesda, but light music doesn't count as funny). Part of me also worried they were showing us too much, that I would play the game and just know how to do everything with no exploration or free thought of my own. No way to absorb the game at my own pace. In the end I was left more excited than nervous, but still cautiously optimistic. Somewhere in the middle?

I came to these forums, after ignoring them and read a few responses. They compelled me to make this thread. Now, I may be assuming things about (would it appropriate to call Fallout 1/2 fans Retro Fallout Fans?), but I take it plenty of you are not big fans of 3/NV?

I'm not even a fan or advocate of pre ordering games and I want to do that for 4. I want that working pipboy and I want to support the game. I know someone should never have to prove themselves to be into the things they are, to have fun how they want to, but I just feel conflicted. I worry so much about games becoming this bland corporate thing where graphics are so detailed that they have about as much depth as a game of pong. Still, I want to be excited for this game. I am. Does anyone here ever feel like this?

Plenty of us are fans of New vegas, but the opinion on 3 is very much mixed 8altho more negative than positive).

I always want to feel excited for new games, but more often than not they always dissapoint, most games nowadays are streamlined for idiots and most of the focus goes into visuals and preorder bonuses. Is good that you are not part of a mass or the other, is always a godo thing to not get swayed by popular opinion.

I'm usually just swayed by what I want. And, yes, plenty of games built today are streamlined far too much. I enjoyed New Vegas just a bit more, way more personality. While I don't feel as excited for newer games, I just felt that way for 4. Then again... E3 has disappointed before, it just can take a while...

I am not gonna even Buy 4 on discount as all the changes done to it disgust me to the very core. I am not supporting something that offends me. But I am not gonna try to make others do the same.

What excites me about the stream [the only thing], is that there appears likely to be improved scripting where the mouse is concerned. That feature with the dog fetching the wrench could mean that the modder might have a built in feature to extract the clicked on location.... That could mean that it might be possible to script a point & click interface. If the dog can go where the player clicked, then the NPCs, and even the PC probably can as well.

The rest of the stream was pretty predictable; pretty disappointing, except for the change to the PA, and interaction with it ~minus the PC modding it of course... that was nuts.

Which changes specifically? The one change I am very worried about are dialogue. Not that he's talking, I'm okay with a series trying to evolve beyond what its origins were. No. I am afraid you will lack dialogue options, dumbing it down.

I'm usually pretty sharp when it comes to analyzing trailers like this. Lately I can easily tell when what a game company is showing you is BS or not. So, why was I not disappointed? What am I not seeing? Other than the dialogue 4 button option prompts? That was kind of stupid...

I don't call any of Bethesda's work an evolution; it's certainly an interpretation. The lack of dialog options IS the concern, and is the de-evolution IMO; to a simplified interaction. I mean... in Fallout 2, the PC meets Lynette, and you will ~never get a conversation like that from Bethesda, or one with the kind of pitfalls, and hidden outcomes like it. Also, they refuse not to telegraph, and they refuse to have NPCs that are dishonest with the player.

Voiced protagonist with only 4 dialogue options at a time and the removal of Skills. THose 2 things are like a bullet to the head to the spirit of Fallout.

I tend to withhold my enthusiasm until the game actually comes out and I've played through it for a bit
I've had far too many instances where I let the hype build and then was severely disappointed with the result

Unfortunately, that requires me to actually either get a PC that can support Fallout 4...since even with lowest settings, low quality packs and numerous fixes, I can't get Fallout 3 to work on my current rig, yet New Vegas runs fine

I dunno, there's dozens of popular games that pulled it off beautifully

(Knights of) The Old Republic, Mass Effect...

There were far too many NPCs that were literally pushing for you to do good in 3 and even some in NV. Part of me hopes that the demo they showed off is only limited in your options because it's a demo... but the rational side knows that probably isn't true. I saw a distinct lack of many things that were common in 3. I don't know what to think...

Neither of those had the Skill check system and flexibility Fallout 1/2/NV had. Just because it works on another kind of game doesn't mean it will work on Fallout.

That's a very good point. Some people are claiming this 4 button dialogue option is optional, but I don't think Bethesda ever announced that. Just wait and see I suppose.

THat's like saying "Hey, piling up blocks worked well on tetris, it will work on Fallout". A very short sighted argument.

I share the contempt companies like Bethesda and Blizzard have for their customers. As a whole, 21st century gamers are a pathetic sludge of people. They act like a combination of spoiled, bratty, illiterate children and hardcore junkies ready to spread their butt cheeks as necessary to get their next fix. They disgust me. I couldn't be happier to have grown up in an earlier time when games were made, to a much larger degree, by and for enthusiasts.

The difference between me and the people who run the big, soulless, AAA-factory game companies is that I can't imagine ever profiting from the weakness of gamers.

KOTOR (both 1 and 2) had skills and NO voiced protagonist. Mass Effect had voiced player characters and it worked out okay, but Bioware are much better writers than Bethesda.

In general, my opinion is very similar to 1magus. I actually kind of enjoyed Fallout 3 even though it was dumb, and I expect to enjoy Fallout 4 at least a little bit.

I just hope they take a page or two out of Obsidian's book. Inject some comedy or something. I am tired of games taking themselves way too seriously just because of their inflated budgets.

I usually feel disconnected, but only lately. There was a shift, and I never really appreciated it before. Back when I played FO2, I would meet others, irl, who also played it, as well as 1 and Tactics.
But since, I feel more and more unenthusiastic about what I percieve as games that are way too similar to each others, and rarely bring anything truly new to the table. Shoot bandits, shoot zombies, shoot bandit-zombies, shoot infecteds, shoot infected bandits, shoot zombie bandits who are also infected - no wait, now you can actually climb - while shooting zombie bandit raider infected mutants, it's STILL the same game.
And I am feeling more and more alone in observing this, among the people I interact with both online and in real life.
One of my best friends is SO enthusiastic about every damn game ever released, he even does get repeatedly dissapointed at the final product because it turned out to be more of the same, but his optimism never suffers, and he keeps pushing these shooter-trailers on me "Come on! Tell me what you think!!!"
Eh... yeah... they were shooting a lot of mutant zombies?

I am an aging niche gamer who mainstream AAA development is passing by more and more everyday. Luckily for me digital distribution, indie development and crowdfunding has taken off some and I'm able to play stuff like Pillars, Wasteland or Dragonfall that wouldn't have seen the light of day 10 years ago.
