Also I want to check the legality of carrying a knife. I realise most people carry knives usually, because there so handy and you never know when you'll need to cut something, but I have no idea if it's ok or not.
Oh I forgot to mention that when I thought about being armed before todays interview I decided against it due to the fact that I'd never kill anyone except in blind uncontrollable anger which I'd no doubt regret. I have sinced changed my mind.
Knives are legal, but there are local laws to consider. In nearly every state an automatic opening knife is illegal. Spring assist is fine, but push button knives like switchblades are usually outlawed. Butterfly knives or balisongs are usually illegal as well. Some states restrict sheathknives, others may restrict blades over 4 inches, and for some few three inches.
Check the local laws but the safest bet is to get a well made three inch spring assisted tactical folder. What you get specifically is up to you, I prefer something with a half serration as it's handy for sawing through rope and other things.
If you decide to look into concealed carry, it's a very different lifestyle. Familiarize yourself with the laws, state and local. Do your research before you pick a gun, find something reliable, but before you let people pressure you into glocks, sigs, or HKs, just find something quality that feels natural in your hand, it makes more difference on your accuracy than anything.
Concealed carry is not something to commit to lightly. I personally bet that you'd be a reasonable enough person to consider a gun a last resort, but if you have any reservations about your self control, think through your decision carefully. And finally, if you decide to get a firearm, learn how to shoot it, unexperienced shooters are a danger to all. Don't worry though, it's something that's fairly simple to pick up, but I do recommend some instruction.
Good luck with whatever you pick. Many people assume that carrying a firearm would make a person cocky or foolhardy, but I've never met someone who carries that hasn't been more reasonable and thoughtful for it. There is a feeling of caution and responsibility that comes to most from legally carrying a firearm.
