This thread can only end in tears. If you want people to like Bethesda/Fallout 3, you are probably in the wrong place. You won't be able to argue a change in personal or majority opinion.

I am a Bethesda/Fallout 3 fan but I am a local minority on the forum. I learned fairly quickly that a debate is pretty much pointless, since both sides are really just arguing for what they love and won't change how they feel.

Keep in mind, you are also arguing with a very small userbase (20 thousand or so people). Fallout 3 sold over 5 million copies in the first week. Most of those people do not know the difference between developers and probably those who do don't care, as long as they enjoy the game.

The people on this forum are "hard core". That's why we looked for a Fallout forum and joined it. Because we are insane or obsessive compulsive or both. Hard core people aren't going to change their opinion.

In the end, it doesn't matter what you, me or anyone else thinks of Bethesda. Their development of the game is not impacted by our feelings or speculation of "how it could have been" if it was developed by someone else.

Let's see if I can fit this all in here.

Personally, I am not so concerned with factual endings or post-end gameplay my concern and distaste with Fallout 3 is numerous and although the "General Fallout Discussion" states specifically not to discuss Fallout 3 it appears to be of no consequence.

Before I begin I want to point on the generational differences between someone who is just playing fallout 3 for the first time as opposed to someone that has played 1, 2 and Tactics. To the person that Fallout 3 is the first of the series you have played i feel bad for you, and I am sorry your parents didn't teach you what real games are about, haha you probably think Dora the Explorer is a good cartoon too, nuff said. Discrediting the predessecors of video games would be the same as saying Michelangelo's David sucks, you have to understand the times of Michelangelo to appreciate his art as opposed to that of Picasso.

Also, some prick wrote in this forum talking $%&# about Tactics, to that person I say the distinguishing part between the rest of the genre is that its title is Tactics, there is no attempt to incorporate Tactics into a RPG, I will now narrate the point of Tactics for that child that grouped it with BoS which we all know is a joke that is not mentioned for its obvious disappointing attempt to incorporate the good name into Console games, this is called Capitalism take a class. Anyway Tactics, takes the idea of a gothic themed post nuclear environment and incorporates a team play experience. The story line is SIICK! It also incorporates the technology known as ONLINE GAMEPLAY not pen and pad, but this is in a time frame when technology was just now being created to support eye candy graphics, not saying that FoT is eye candy but u get the idea. FoT requires people to create character specific specialties to defeat opponents that are doing the same thing takes not only tactics but intellectual prowess that FALLOUT IS KNOWN FOR! So to you STFU, or come on Gameranger for a lesson.

Here is a few of my more serious disgusts with FO3. I will start at the very beginning! Hmmmm i can't kill my dad, and i feel actually like a child (good idea but let's leave it for the SIMS not FALLOUT) Wait can I even do anything or is the plot written specifically so that I get where the creator wants me to go? Why do I feel like I am playing Half-life only I wear a vault suit? Look with this game I might as well have had my helicoptor shot down and ended up fighting an army of demons. Then once I got outside of the Vault which I really felt indifferent about because the feel of the game didn't support an exciting feeling of playing in my opinion one of the top 5 most highly acclaimed releases of the 21st, by the time I got through all the bologne inside the vault I was only slightly excited to experience the "outside world" which did in fact disappoint! I quickly stumbled upon a shack in the middle of nowhere with nothing around it, just an ex-hooker on the inside and what I can't hook up with her? BS!!! Why is that, is it because of the first person view would provide too mature of content for people to stomach? Soon there after I really had a hard time navigating through the game and because of the ambiguous plot line I really was sort of lost... It took too long to travel between towns, there was far too much space, it was like a big heaping pile of crap with some good ideas thrown inside. Immediately I stumbled upon super muties, that were weak as s%%% I think I killed them with a hunting rifle, they didnt run at me trying to smash my face in, and the soundtrack sucked. I felt like I was playing Zelda 64 traveling in between towns. I am not sure which was worse, the weak selection of weapons or how stupid they looked? I will be the first to admit I stopped playing this game and then went back to it and tried to press on, and I did but I havent finished it and I am not going to... I got on just the other day and some stupid chick I recruited from the BoS said "Danger is about" or some weak crap like that, I wanted to laugh her voice reminded me of the elf from Warcraft 2. I think the guys that made this game should have spent less time playing that childly cartoonish game WoW on lunch break and more time playing Fallout 1, 2...

The reason that I love Fallout is that I can do anything I want if I want to go up and hit on a chick I can, if I want to unload a full burst at point blank range and watch her body ripped to shreds I can, if I want to steal her $$ I can do that too. Fallout is violently bloody, satirically funny, and mostly fairly in tune with the real world. Seriously think about it in the 1960's duck and cover was taught to every American, the world of Fallout pretty much shows to a T what the idea of that world would look like 30 years after a nuclear war. It is very accurate granted some things debatably a little far fetch, but not really, most of this crap is stuff that you learn at your university, from the science to military science to day to day living and everything in between. Sure some of it may be a little over-emphasized but the point is... people dont still play Doom because of the graphics they play it because its fun. I like the idea of a first person Fallout world, I really do, Back in 1998 my friend and I would toss back forth ideas about what a FP Fallout would be like, butttt I couldnt give 2 craps if they still used the original engine and drew everything freehand, lol not saying that Bethesda has anyone there that can draw freehand i mean I really wonder how much freehand drawing they had to do with this cloned engine... Or they could have used the Tactics engine and enhanced it some I really dont care but the point is, the world of Fallout is easy to wrap your mind around it is not cartoony and childish like WoW or alot of these other magic games it is not really a game that you just walk through, Fallout teaches u as you go its not an FPS you just run through but it has realistic scenarios not like fixing stupid leaking pipes I mean seriously someone else should have fixed that by now. (chill on that point, the point is it was much different than the older fallouts)

I know many people that I have shown Fallout 1 or 2 to and they seriously don't possess the mental prowess to play it and be successful they dont get the idea of turn base game play, the closest they ever got to solving a quest was a key in the room goes to the door on the opposite side of the room... fallout is a world of espionage, deceit, and justice found in the barrel of a dessert eagle .44 where heroism is rewarded by sex drugs or more ammo. This game is not for the console, nor is an RTS, console games (while they have their place Halo, 007, Mario, family games, soul caliber, various other games) are meant for a target audience that just wants to plug and play not learn abunch of crap... Game developers need to be able to understand people, no one really wants to go through a bunch of tutorials and crap no one reads game manuals unless the game catches them enough that they want to know more and be the best, or it has a super sick intro like Fallout Tactics, manuals are important, people can dl that crap on the internet for free or be legit because they care about something that is important, like an epic series like Diablo or Fallout (diablo 3 is still top down.... hmmm maybe those guys at Blizzard are on to something laff) Also it important to note that GTA while it does provide the opportunity to be somewhat of a dictator its storyline is very typical and urban whereas fallout's is ingenious unique and quite intelligent... really GTA requires as much intelligence as Tony Hawk's Pro Skaters which i'll play a little bit of but that game isn't going to keep me up all night because I can't get enough and I just want to get that much further!

Fallout 3 is weak, I'd say that it absolutely flops. I choose Descent 1 or Mechwarrior over this game any day. All the people look the same, you can't join the BoS, deathclaws are weak, caves are gay, a tree that people worship but is a dude is just weird, psycho ladies wearing costumes is weak, the guns selection is very limited, random encounters not knowing what they may be is stupid, mutants are weak, enclave is weak, finding ears and fingers is really weird, they didnt build nuclear blast safe boxes on the street corners in the 60's, if I want to sleep in someone else's better i better freaking well be able to, flamer ants are too strong, those stupid enemies in caves are retarded looking and have no basis in anything remotely real ie like a mutated radscorpian, getting laid is more work than in REAL LIFE, armor looks weak, the games isn't dark enough, i can't kill everyone because it limits gameplay, there is no super awesome city where I can get more advanced weapons, water doesn't heal people, i never eat, npc's are deuschbags, I could go on but the point is this game blows, scrap the game and make a new one using Tactics engine!

Thanks for nothing. Oh and I would say that you ruined the Fallout name, but you really can't its too awesome and eventually you will sell the rights to someone who can do it justice and that's that...

also these are things that i have observed other people have had problems with it too. most people i know dont get very far in game because its just too much without anything else going on.

Just because your post was so long and to play the devil's advocate, I'm going to reply to some points:

All the people look the same
There's not a great deal of variety in Fallout 1/2 either

You can't join the BoS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjynMXSgy5Q

You are more or less a member of the Lyon's Pride when you do the main story line

deathclaws are weak
Turn the difficulty to max. Deathclaws weren't particularly powerful in the previous games once you had power armor either.

caves are gay
What about the caves are different than any previous cave?

a tree that people worship but is a dude is just weird
This started in Fallout 1/Fallout 2, he was already growing a tree out of his head:
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Harold

the guns selection is very limited
There are more guns in Fallout 3 than in Fallout 1/2 combined:
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_weapons

random encounters not knowing what they may be is stupid
Is this different than the previous games? Information on all of the random encounters can be found here:
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_random_encounters

mutants are weak, enclave is weak
Turn up the difficulty to max

they didnt build nuclear blast safe boxes on the street corners in the 60's
This is a '50s/60s style alternate universe, we didn't get nuked and the states didn't annex Canada. Cars were not nuclear powered, etc.

flamer ants are too strong
Shoot their antenna/use mines

those stupid enemies in caves are retarded looking and have no basis in anything remotely real ie like a mutated radscorpian
I guess you're referring to Mirelurks? Those are crabs: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Mirelurk

Some of the Fallout 1/2 enemies were just as far fetched:
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Wanamingo
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Floater

water doesn't heal people
Neither does Fruit or Iguana-on-a-stick but it does in the previous versions

i never eat
Is this even a requirement in the first two? I ate constantly at the first in place of stimpacks.

Soon there after I really had a hard time navigating through the game and because of the ambiguous plot line I really was sort of lost

There is a quest log and a marker on the map... the compass even shows you which direction to go.

It took too long to travel between towns
There is a quick travel system

psycho ladies wearing costumes is weak
caves are gay
armor looks weak
finding ears and fingers is really weird
the games isn't dark enough
npc's are deuschbags
there is no super awesome city where I can get more advanced weapons

The above are more opinions than factual arguments.

It would have been easier to simply say you don't like Fallout 3 and liked Fallout 1/2 rather than use some of points above. Much of what you wrote was opinion presented as truth and truth is subjective. Some of the facts were also not entirely accurate.

It's one thing to have an opinion and prefer the earlier in the series to what's out now but once you start making assumptions about the kind of people who enjoy Fallout 3 and detailing incorrect information as part of the argument, you end up way out in left field.

Just to go off on a (slightly ridiculous) side note, I don't understand how people can attach realism to Fallout 1&2 when it features Dessert Seagulls that aren't jamming, useless pieces of shit.

Haha, dessert seagulls... they're the worst.

( Please read the whole post, partly reading it will make you think I am biased or harsh when I'm not)

Look maybe it's wrong of me to seek compromise but comeon. The fights dismissing Bethesda is childish.

Look I know you guys like FO1 and FO2 and their good games. But you act like Black isle Studies were gods. Fact is they made other Fallout games and they DID make them wether you'd like to pretend to yourself they did or not. And so you pretend they didn't and just say they made the two games you consider masterpieces: Fallout 1 and 2.

As for Obsidian their games have been buggy/Sub-par/ or actually pretty good but Average in scale. Meaning :o Surprise! Because their humans not everything they do is perfect and also the fallout veterens have been with them for awhile so don't pretend they JUST joined the team to make New Vegas.

I mean afterall, only Michael Jordan is God in disguise! *coughs*

Jokes aside Bethesda have made mistakes too, their games being buggy aswell like..well a lot of other RPGs. But their a class act RPG maker.

While Black Isle and their workers who moved on to Obsidian made Fallout 1 and 2 they made missteps aswell(Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and their recent games have been mediocore. So please don't protect them and treat them like gods because fact is they haven't been doing too well recently.

Now while yes they are making Fallout: New Vegas don't pretend like Bethesda is giving them free rein, fact is behind the scenes their helping aswell. Kind of like the situation with Devil May Cry where Team Little Devil and Hideki Kamiya helped the DMC 2 team to make DMC 3, a masterpiece in the hearts of DMC fans.

Look at both their strengths. Far as I've seen Black Isle's team(Some of them in Obsidian now) had strengths in story and writing. Bethesda's strengths are in making the game itself along with a bit of humor and writing.

What I wish would happen would be if Bethesda made Fallout 4 with a new engine and dabbled the game with ideas and humor and Obsidian was hired alongside to work on the story and writing.

Remember, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.
So is true for Black Isle/Obsidian/ and Bethesda team members.

Let me explain this in simple terms:

People in NMA like games like Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. Black Island made games like that.

Bethesta has a different style. Their games (at least Oblivion and Fallout 3) can be classified as of a different genre than Fallout 1 and 2.

When Bethesta brought the Fallout trademark, they effectivelly killed the possibility that a spiritual sequel of Fallout 1 and 2, with the same type of gameplay, could be made.

People in NMA would like to have a Fallout 3 like Fallout, but Bethesta denied that possibility.

Therefore it is trivial to note that NMA is angry at Bethesta.

See: There is nothing wrong with the "f*ck bethesta" attitude.
