Bethesda's Lore Recons

Detroit is a ruinous mess, just like most other rust belt cities, but doesn't Chicago have worse gun violence rates?

Either way, neither would be that much different in-game then they are IRL.

Maybe that's why the MwBoS never went into Chicago proper during tactics?

Hmm, apparently Bethesda did actually explain this one. Pipe weapons are apparently pre-war items coming from Detroit.

Still retarded though.

Oh, well, that explains it perfectly. The citizens of Detroit had nothing better to do than hide endless amounts of pipe pistol in every safe in Boson just as the bombs fell. You know, in case a functionally 240 years old Vault Dweller picked all those locks on their way to save their son somewhere down the line.

Such worldbuilding. Much care.

Just because the style of gun originated in Detroit doesn't mean that all of them came from Detroit.

Nice doge meme though.(being serious)

I think the very existence of the Pipeweapons is stupid enough. I mean they even "junkified" all the other weapons on the way out too. Pipe Weapons should be available only via crafting or looting them from Raiders. Then again they have Jet mentioned by name on a pre war terminal and Meathead Hines already says they don't give a shit about internal logic on "a game with talking ghouls". (Because apparently the fact that the Ghouls can talk is somehow weird or noteworthy?).

There aren't any armament factories in Boston, or is there? If there is I haven't found any.

The whole point of the pipe weapon is that they are something you can make yourself at home.

You don't need a factory to make them, that's sort of the point of it being a pipe gun. Like real world pipe guns aren't made at a factory, they are things rednecks build at their house because they think they are cool for having a home made gun.

Boston was the site of a major military deployment or some shit. I forget specifics.

Oh okay. Then why did they originate from Detroit when you can make it at home? And that the guns will differ in appearance to each other?

I don't really mind the pipe weapons, it's just a logical progression from the early stages of Fallout 2, really. Given that pre-war guns will corrode at some point it's feasible that there'd be a lot of home-made guns from junk around.
That being said, those pipe weapons don't make much sense in pre-war safes and the junk-look of even the pre-war/"professional" weapons is quite odd, to say the least.

I wouldn't say that the guns originate in Detroit, I'd interprete that magazine as simply having a story about a few particular junk-pistols from Detroit. It's just an example, I wouldn't think about it too much.

Along with all the other guns they could have added. If they wanted to reuse so many assets why not add the Chinese Assault Rifle?

Or any proper assault rifle, while we're at it... And no, a water-cooled HMG from WWI is not what I consider a proper assault rifle, even if it's chambered in 5.56mm.

Actually, the Chinese assault rifle was in the game at some point. The texture for it is in the game files.

What we got as the assault rifle is labeled a machine gun in its textures. So apparently at some point they ditched the Chinese assault rifle and relabeled the machine gun as an assault file.

Ah, the old "repurpose during development". Classic. Gave us the Bozar!
