Briton faces execution for smuggling heroin in China

Hm..., interesting. Does anyone know what is the legal precedent for executing another country's citizen for crimes committed inside his/her non-native country?

Well, I guess he is the chosen sacrificial lamb.

It depends on the treaties between countries. Typically for the US we give the individual to the country where the crime was committed.

And quit bitching Makenshi. No one thinks we're perfect. We're just in the best position to provide aid AND we are willing to do so.

Maybe you'd like to ask china next time? OR I KNOW! Cambodia! Or Saudi Arabia. Maybe Sudan?

Next act of god or man, I would like to see which countries that not only can match the west's capacity to provide aid, but also willing to give it.

God this is sad.

But it's not like this doesn't happen everyday somewhere else.

That's sad, they wrote that this guy was mentally ill and not aware that he was smuggling drugs.

BRITISH Prime Minister Gordon Brown confirmed that China executed a British national today, which he condemned "in the strongest terms''.

Good job Mr Brown.

Maybe if we condemn it hard enough the Chinese will bring him back.

He thought this:

Was going to make him into a popstar.

I don't know what to say to that....., really.

I am surprised nobody played this for the authorities...., but I guess it's too late now. :|

Why don't we execute a Chinese national that's in one of our jailcells as revenge?

For something completely trivial, like forgetting his passport or something.

It would be unjust. One that needs to be executed is the Chinese judge that gave that sentence or the Chinese president.

Actually, the best way of taking revenge would be finding the guys that gave him the drugs and slowly torturing these bastards to death. They have killed him and killed the people who died from their drugs.

Dude smuggles 4kg of heroin into China, dude gets tried and executed. I don't see anything remotely controversial about this.

And yes, of course he'll say that he's been tricked and random dudes put it in his suitcase. What is he going to do, confess?

I honor my brave drug dealers for going beyond the call of duty for me.

*Salute*

He shall be missed.

Except that this guy was mentally ill. It's easy to trick such a person.

So you say that a mentally ill person, who had a family and three children, managed to travel to China by himself with 4kg of heroin, and then the Chinese executed him because they can?

Sure, it's quite possible that some mistakes were made and I have no clue how mentally ill this man was, but you have to keep in mind that anyone, mentally ill or not, is going to take this route to try to get released. That he and his family are saying this is to be expected regardless of his actual mental health, so you really can't draw any conclusion from that.
But most of the reporting seems to concentrate on 'British national executed by China!' and not on 'Mentally ill man executed without psychological assessment".

Huh. He made the news in Poland too, as he used to be a homeless guy over here prior.

Also, Sorrow, I'm kind of weary of criminals taking to the mental illness line of defence. Certainly, there is much to be done in the department of diagnosing, treating and preventing mentall illness, but as Sander points out, this is a serious loophole anyone in their sane mind (sic!) is going to try to exploit to save their sempiternae.

And in fact, I don't think that the punishment is doubleplusexcessively cruel and unusual, given the amount of damage those drugs could do to irresponsible users.

For all I know, they could cause several individuals to go schizophrenic(sp.?) and go on being duped into commiting crimes themselves.

At any rate, what is more regrettable is that this man was struck with such a misfortune as a mental illness and was unable to obtain efficient help beforehand, rather than that he commited a crime and was tried for it according to a harsh law.

One thing that makes me wonder is why didn't he turn-in the people who gave him the drugs if he was sane.

Anyway, why would any sane person would travel to China?

To answer your question Starseeker- probably. The Chinese like their death penalty and make liberal use of it.

If this asshole smuggled heroin in China knowing the potential consequences. Honestly, I got no problem with him being excuted for this. The guy is a parasite.

(so ok, I am not totally anti-China)

Problem is- the guy is mentally ill. How mentally ill? Retarded? Psychopathic? Kleptomaniac? That's a serious mitigating factor.
