Buying a PS3

If you're just now getting into Metal Gear, you're in for a ride.

I'd recommend picking up Ground Zeroes for PC when you're done with the Legacy Collection, then The Phantom Pain when it comes out.

If I may, I don't know what your plans are for playing, but if you're going to play through the whole Legacy Collection, you might want to hold off a bit and play Demon's Souls first, as it's incredibly short and can be completed within a day or two, especially for an experienced Dark Souls player. Metal Gear on the other hand is a serious commitment.

It's that short? Okay, will do.

Yes, it's that short.

It has no bonfires, so every level must be redone from the beginning if you die, but to counter that they allow shortcuts to be opened throughout the level. This design decision means each area is very, very short.

The Nexus System also speeds things up a bit, no trekking from one side of the Kingdom to the other in this game.

I just warped through the first archstone (archestone?) and can already tell I'll enjoy the game, and also that it is only now that I realize these games really were made with a controller in mind. I figured with dsmfix dark souls was as good with m+kb as with a controller, but the mapping of the controls and the subtleties are off just a little bit. Oh and in between this sentence and the last I did my first parry. (I've got the ps3 under my desk, tv to my side) I'm almost inclined to I feel giddy at the prospect of a game as masterfully put together as Dark Souls 1. The art style and atmosphere too are right up my alley.

Um, Last of Us is kinda the big one to get. Also Red Dead Redemption is great, I enjoyed it more than the recent GTA entries.

I was able to get an 80GB PS3 for $80, so if you can get a system between the $80-$100 range with a decent amount of internal storage (at least 60-80GB) and maybe get it bundled with a good game or two, I'd more than consider the investment.

It was how I was able to finally play New Vegas and Fallout 3.

For someone who says he likes the game, he has an odd penchant for exaggerating every negative whenever it comes to Demon's Souls. The game is NOT short at all. Not in the least bit. Dark Souls is a much shorter game, with much less involved levels. Demon's Souls will take you a good 10-20 hours to beat on your first try, assuming your skills are still sharp from solid experience from Dark Souls. But the two games are not to be confused; they're 2 completely different beasts. Some (not all) of the levels in DeS will make you their bitch, and the bosses in general will laugh at the sorry excuse for "experience" that their successor counterparts have left in your laps.

If you take your time and enjoy the game, it will easily rack up no less than 40-50 hours for a single NG run. If you rush it, I think the world record for Platinum from start to finish is about 20 hours, and that includes TONS of glitch abusing which you're doubtless completely unaware of. So, take it from me, you're going to be in for a (great) ride, not a brief one. But by COMPARISON of an entire series, knocking out DeS will be the much shorter route. By comparison of THAT, stumbling into the maze-like mess that is MGS storytelling is an even larger endeavor. So sitting through about 50 hours of cutscenes and another several hundred hours of gameplay for the 10-odd games that make up that behemoth of a series, obviously that will take much longer.

Yes, like I've said many a time, you're not doing the games justice if you don't play them on a PS3. They were made FOR PS3s, not 360s, not PCs. The first game was dedicated to its atmosphere and world building, so if you like it already after just entering 1-1, you're gonna really love the game. Also, while WAY nastier than Blighttown, Demon's Souls equivalent won't present you with framerate issues (not that Blighttown ever presented that to me, but people keep insisting it's common) while you traverse it.

The most fun I have with the game is deciding how I wish to traverse the levels when I first unlock them on a brand new character. Since you start out really weak, and every area has certain foes that you're totally unprepared to face without proper equipment, yet every area has "key" item pickups, it's always fun choosing a different route, so I'll have a completely different character by the 3rd level because of the route I chose compared to the last character, who went by a different route. Unlike Dark Souls, in which you MAY be lucky enough to acquire very rare and special drops from particular enemies early on (the Black Knight Sword from the first Black Knight, the Trident from the first Channeler, etc), these aren't subject to drop rates. It's all up to planning. It's a ton of fun! =D

This is gonna sound like bragging, but fuck it I need to make a point.

On my first playthrough of Dark Souls, blind, it took me 50 hours in total.

On my first playthrough of Demons's Souls, blind, it took me 12 hours in total.

In both I explored areas and fought every boss available (Save for Dark Sun Gwyndolin, who' pretty well hidden.)

The only bosses I died to were The Maneaters, The Penetrator and The Old Hero. I died to the Maneaters around 3 times, the Penetrator around four, and the Old Hero once.

All the other bosses were beaten on first try, with the default starting Knight armor/gear (Longsword, Kite Shield.)

My point being, Demon's Souls is a shorter game than Dark Souls, it's really inarguable, everyone acknowledges this. I personally found it miles easier than Dark Souls, but obviously it's different for different people.

I feel like Demon's Souls would indeed be done faster than Dark Souls for me, if not for the fact that I'm using an entirely different input. Using a controller is cool, especially for this game. But using a controller seriously for the very first time, on a souls game? Don't work too well.

The world records for speed runs just prove otherwise to your statements, AP. It's a SLOW speedrun to beat Dark Souls in 1:30, meanwhile 2:00 is remarkably fast for Demon's Souls. Whatever measuring stick you're using when you say "everyone acknowledges this", its measurements are clearly faulty.

Are you honestly comparing speed runs for a game's average length? That's beyond silly.

The average amount of time it takes for people to beat Demons's Souls is most definitely shorter than it is for Dark Souls.

Have a look around the internet, I very frequently see people talking about the length of Demon's Souls, they usually say stuff such as "Man that game was great but I wish it was longer!", I dare you to find someone other than yourself saying "Man I liked that Dark Souls game but I wish it was as long as Demon's Souls." It just doesn't happen, Demon's Souls is shorter than Dark Souls, that's just how things are. It's not to reflect on the quality of the game whatsoever, so don't take any personal insult from this as you seem to have done at every DeS criticism I've made, it's just a fact that DeS is a comparatively shorter game next to The Metal Gear series and even Dark Souls.

Pssh. You're mistaking Tomb Raider with The Order: 1886. Or MGS4, or one of David Cage's terribad playable movies.

Last of us is worse than a 60 dollar movie, it's a 30fps console shooter with delusions of being a stealth game and a deep story.

Yes I've seen a lot of youtube critiques of it. It really is a shame that some people are so desperate for what they view as artistic videogames, that they'll praise this so much, and even call it the citizen kane of games. But most people see how silly that is.

You know I think Citizen Kane was more of an innovator in technique than it was praised critically? So I think maybe Wolfenstein 3D or something fits that bill better. Though trying to compare a game with that movie is in itself futile.
