Straight from Robert "fourzertwo" Bowling's Twitter feed - by now the most up-to-the-minute news source for all things Infinity Ward - comes this image, and the following message.

Just recieved the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. "Shit just got real."

You'll note of course the addition of the Call of Duty name to the package, which is abrupt if not surprising given the marketing magnitude of that brand. I reached out to Activision for feedback, so I'll pass any comments along as they're received.

But let's not get distracted from the important issue: we're all gawking at the box art around here, and, hey, wait a minute. Does anyone else think that thing in the background looks a lot like the American Capitol Building in Washington D.C. with a chunk taken out of the dome?

Modern Warfare 2's Prestige Edition includes fully functioning night vision goggles

Now this is how you do a special edition. Activision and Infinity Ward look to be going all out for its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 "Prestige Edition," with not only the usual accoutrements like a special casing and an art book, but also what is described by Community Manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling as a "fully functioning NVGs -- night vision goggles." No idea how well they work, but it's got alternating modes and MW2 branding. That's pretty awesome, but we gotta imagine it's gonna demand a pretty penny - this is definitely more than that $80 "collector's edition" for $80 GameStop is currently listing. You won't be able to get your actual hands on the game until November at the earliest, so in the meantime, hit up the YouTube link to get a glimpse of the "official" unboxing:

The NVG idea is so stupid, it's mind boggling.

Any guesses as to what the "Prestige" Edition is going to cost?

It's 150 dollars American, without tax of course.

Someone had to outdo the stupidity behind Halo 3's Legendary Box and Fallout 3's Survival Edition.

I wonder how many people are going to be blinded by attempting to use their Night Vision Goggles to see even better during the daytime.

Did anyone read the words "fully functioning"?

Bloddy sure it's better to get NVG's than some silly artbook or T-shirt. Of course, if it's a lie, than it's crap indeed.

About the price, well... how much does a NVG cost?

You're sitting around, wondering that?

Depends on quality, you can get a cheap one for about 50 quid or an expensive one that will cost a couple of thou.

Well, screw the NVG's and all stuff in the box. The most important thing is the US Capitol Building partially destroyed in that pic.

What do you guys think that may happen in the game? Just a terrorist strike, or full scale war?

Both the capitol building and the "call of duty" additions to the box art look sloppily 'chopped in.

Prank?

I dunno, IIRC the action takes place in Brazil, Russia and some other place I can't remember very well... what I do remember is that they dropped the whole 'call of duty' name entirely for this game.

Except that they confirmed that they're retaining the Call of Duty name, source.

Apparently they will continue to focus on Modern Warfare as the main brand, but will retain the Call of Duty brand as it takes place in the same universe (and vastly increases brand awareness).

Also, the capitol building might as well mean absolutely nothing and just be cool, or it might not be the capitol building at all. There are a ton of big, domed buildings in the world.

In any case, anything said about it now is pure speculation.

No.

I spent an hour driving around wondering that.

Then I stopped and had some lunch.

Then I played Painkiller for an hour.

Then I went to work and polled the children about it.

They were not amused.

I can, I saw a friggin Dao-X in some of the trailers, if that crap's in MP from an early level that is gonna SUCK, it better either have like no ammo, be inaccurate, have some massive recoil, or just have a med-slow rate of fire.

In one screenshot or trailer for MW2 I saw a Dao-X or street sweeper or whatever you'd like to call it, an automatic shotgun with a barrel on the bottom.

I was saying that if I do play the multiplayer I just pray that it's not in there at all or that it just has some kind of good disadvantage to it to keep it from being a monster of a weapon that everyone constantly slings around.
