Gunman kills 21 on Virginia Tech campus.

I'm (more) glad I decided to leave Virginia Tech last year.

Wikipedia said:
Virginia Tech shooting incident occurred on April 16, 2007. At least 22 students have been killed, and at least 28 injured, making it the deadliest school shooting in United States history.

The first shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory, where one person was killed. Shooting was also reported at Norris Hall, an engineering building. All classes for the day and the following day were canceled and students were instructed to stay inside away from windows. Also, all schools in Montgomery County have been closed for the day. It appears earlier reports that the police have arrested one suspected gunman were false.

At a noon press conference, authorities indicated there may have been over 20 fatalities and 28 injuries. Two students were injured after they panicked and jumped out an upper level window.

As of 12:22 PM EDT, Fox News was reporting 22 dead, including one gunman who is reported to be an Asian-American student. The AP is reporting 22 dead, including the one gunman.

Oh Great not another one!
Now when they find the asshole he'll probably blame video games and movies like the rest of them have and we have another exceedingly stupid surge of censorship.
Gawd Mother Fucking Damnit! :x

Edit: I grieve for the loss of human life... It's just that I'm also dreading the reaction of the public and what's worse is that this happened as deep in the bible belt you can get so the reactions will be worse than they would be otherwise

Virginia Tech has a large ROTC program, it could have something to do with that. Though it is worthless to speculate until there is more information on the shooter(s).

I'm glad to see your priorities are in the right place, 10mmCurator.

<s>Angrim, information about the gunman/men is confused at this point. There may be more than one.</s>

I wonder if anyone I know was killed? As an engineering student, not only did I have classes in Norris hall, but many of the students I know also had classes there. Time to call some people, though the county telephone lines might be overwhelmed.

Edit: Nope, can't get a call through, damn.

Edit 2:

News reports indicated that the gunman used two 9-MM handguns before turning a gun on himself.
. . .
2:00 p.m.: Federal authorities confirm 32 dead.

Sad news :( . People really should stop shooting random people when they have problems :( .

I heard this in the morning on the radio while driving to my university.

Well Tannhauser I thought maybe you were being a little sensitive when you said the people you met while working towards your degree were "not the people I want to work with the rest of my life". I think you were right.

32 dead? This could end up being as remembered as that clock tower shooting in Texas a long time ago.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

The television news (NBC) is reporting that the gunman chained the exits of the class building closed, to prevent easy escape.

VD, this is more than double the number of people killed in the University of Texas tower incident. It ranks at or near the top of many categories; it is safe to say this will be remembered.

Apparently George Bush will give an address at 4:15 PM (EST).

Edit: Well, finally was able to contact the people I know over at VT, they are all fine. It was unlikely that anyone I know was even involved, with the huge numbers of students at the university; but it is nice to be sure.

I think that this tragedy could be easily avoided if more students would have guns with them.

Weapons are flatly illegal on campus, which is hardly unusual; even if Virginia is rather open with it's laws on handguns.

Any further discussion on gun laws will be split and possibly vatted.

Wikipedia said:
Eyewitnesses described the killer as a young Asian man wearing a maroon cap and a black leather jacket or a vest. His identity is presently unknown. He is reported to have been killed, though whether by police gunfire or suicide is unclear. The gunman is believed to have used one 9 mm caliber handgun and one 22-caliber handgun, which have been found at the scene.

Comparison

With current death toll estimates at 31 or 32, the massacre has been confirmed as being the single deadliest civilian shooting in United States history, surpassing the Luby's massacre of 1991, which saw 24 deaths.

It is also the deadliest school shooting, well surpassing the 13 deaths of the infamous Columbine High School massacre of 1999, and the 16 deaths at the University of Texas massacre. It is the second deadliest school related massacre in the nation's history, the deadliest being the 1927 Bath School disaster.

Glad to hear none of your friends got hurt Tannhauser.

I read in a swedish news paper that the shooter was "looking for his girlfriend". Sounds a little strange and taken out of context though (which is rather common for that particular paper). Still waiting for it on the tv news.

On another note:
It is at times like these people remembers how fragile they are. Though I do hope people thinks this over, I wish they don't get any ideas from it. There will always be nut jobs. Don't feed their imagination. Please.

Before the mass shooting in the class building, remember that there was a lesser shooting in a dormitory.

The (shaky) theories I have heard, from televised news and my friends in Blacksburg, is that it was related to a relationship. Either that the killer first shot his girlfriend and/or a RA in the dormitory, then went to his own classes before going on a rampage; or she wasn't in her room, he killed her roommate in the dormitory, and then he went to her class building looking for her.

I believe those are the rumors going through the student body, and have been reported on in the press. However, I doubt it is anywhere close to accurate, the VT grapevine rarely is.

Maybe too much sun. People get more nervous and more active - and some people with neurosis get agressive too.

April 20th is on Adolf Hitler's birthday.

Which means his parents had sex the month before august which is the time of death for Stephen I of Hungary who afterwards got a celebration in his name on, behold, August 16, except in Hungary where it is observed on August 20!*

back on topic:
How are things in the state atm? I don't understand why they wont cover this thing more on national tv. I've met several people who haven't heard about it yet.

This makes me sick, seeing something like this happen so close to the Columbine shooting. I may be from Iowa, but I can sympathize with people who have lost loved ones today. This has fucked my day up.

Edit: You know that you're a cold bastard, alec? It's not like we don't know that innocent Iraqis have been killed over there. But, who says that we're doing most of the killing? Remember, IEDs don't discriminate.

Yeah, I know, I'm truly sorry about that post. It won't happen again, I promise. I forgot to take my medication in time, that's all.
Anyway: I saw 'Bowling For Columbine' and the Gus Van Sant movie about the Columbine tragedy, and I must say those movies really filled me with disgust. What happened on Virginia Tech Campus (I saw some pics on BBC World) is a sad affair. I feel for the families of those students. Let's just hope such a tragical affair never happens again.

Wikipedia: Running Amok said:
Running amok was both a way of escaping the world (since perpetrators were normally killed) and re-establishing one's reputation as a man to be feared and respected.

Attempts of suicide by police isn't uncommon, nor is it uncommon for someone who wishes to commit suicide to deliberately do something so horrible that the shame of their acts overpowers their cowardice towards death. Many people who are constantly belittled or who have secluded themselves and think themselves victims tend towards thoughts of violence thinking that making others fear them will afford them some respect, even if it's after their death. Others who think themselves invisible (usually because, again, they have secluded themselves) want to become visible, much in the childish "they'll remember me when I'm gone" or "I'll give them something to remember" line of thinking.

There's any number of things that can lead a person to "Running Amok" but for the most part it is feelings of repression or depression, which are usually linked. Much of the time their situation is self inflicted really. People who resign themselves to depression create for themself a cycle, where they cut themselves off from the world, then begin to think the world has abandoned them or forced them down, which simply furthers their downward spiral.

I've personally known two people who have been caught shortly before going postal. One in high-school, who was caught with a pack full of pure ammonium nitrate (used for fertilizer for wheat fields) stolen from his family's farm and was attempting to create a bomb under the bleachers of the school field (the evacuation point for a bomb threat, the school's evacuation plan was changed drastically afterward so as to not bring all of the students to a single point) and again in the military when a squadmate was caught trying to smuggle over a hundred rounds of live 5.56 ammo into a blank-firing exersize involving the entire squadron (what was more frightening was that I was assigned to the command post along with most of the officers, who were most of the top people on his list, even if I wasn't on it).

Edit: Oh, and Alec, Bowling for Columbine was a biased piece of shit, not a documentary by any means.

Bowling For Columbine isn't really a documentary, this fact was discovered by Dinosaur archeologists. Moving along.

So a couple of guys thought they found the perp's livejournal profile

wanus-facebook-0b4.png

Turns out it's not him.

Updated his website today with a drudge report claiming that him being the shooter was a hoax. :)

Well, at this point, 11:30 PM EST, there has not been any significant additions to the information on this shooting. I doubt there will be anything new until tomorrow.
