Companions: Thoughts about them?

Curious about the italian voice acting, was it better than Fallout 3's Stanislao?

Way better and quite good on the whole, considering the amount of characters. There are a handful of exceptions (all single characters), though, with the absolute worst being Benny. I put a bullet in his skull as soon as I could just for that. The companions thankfully have all good voices with the exception of Lily, But I don't care about her. :V

Stiull, it's not always perfect. Sometimes the VOs use the wrong tone of voice (lack of info on the context I guess), and rarely some lines are spoken without the 'accent' they are using for the character, which is weird. FO3 had the same problems.

On the whole a good work, anyway.

The translation on the other hand is a bit of a mess. Whoever made it translated sayings, jokes and figures of speech basically verbatim which is awful. Add some mistakes due to lack of info on the context and the occasional mistake and you end up with things like the fire axe (you know, the tool used by firemen) translated as if it was some kind of magical Fire Axe +1. Or the hunting rifle and the hunting shotgun translated with the same name (?). The worst is Boone's quest, half of what he says make absolutely no sense.

I don't really dabble in more than one companion per playthrough.

I first thought about bringing Boone along but it felt like he was way too 'gloom and doom' just judging from when you meet him. Sorta boring. So I brought Cass along and really liked her. Fiery and funny, a pretty successful nod to Cassidy I'd say.
Also brought along Rex (after ED-E died like 5 minutes after I got it up and running). Fun little sidequest for him, and having a canine companion always feels right in these games, but controlling him is such a pain in the ass.

At least with the followers that have ranged weapons, they usually stay back and shoot but Rex will gladly run into the middle of a deathclaw nest to fight.

Bringing Raul along this time around and I must say that I think the actor did a great job with his voice, can't relate to the complaints there.

I think as far as the Fallouts go, New Vegas seem to have the best companions. But yeah, it's a shame that it can be such a pain to control them. The companion wheel made it a bit easier but honestly... It's still a real mess, and they're still as stupid as ever unfortunately.

Boone is awesome in both battle and story.
Cass is ok I guess, never used her much since she was a cowboy like me.
Arcade sucks balls and I never managed to get the PA off him before the game was almost over.
ED-D get stuck fucking everywhere and needs babysitting. And she reveals the entire wasteland worth of critters, making fasttravel unavailable.
Rex runs into fights and dies.

Well, that's the point. The power armor and the training become available short before "the final act."

Uh? You can fast travel if there aren't enemies nearby, it doesn't matter if they are shown on your compass.

Cass was my favorite. I kept her with me for the entire game and only sent her back in order to do all the other companion quests. I thought her quests, dialogue and back-story was some of the best stuff the franchise has seen to date.

I just wish their quests were longer and more involved. Oh well.

Alsoplustoo: I actually really liked Raul and thought his voice-acting was appropriate.

Just a curiosity, after I upgraded ED-E at the Followers of the Apocalypse, he turned out to be a useless piece of junk, he simply stays wherever I fast travel to, hasn't attacked once since I got him back, and just sometimes he will follow me, usually on places that it doesn't matter (casinos etc).

Has anyone else experienced that those bugs?

ED-E and the dog were both fucked for me. I don't even know where the hell ED-E who doesn't shoot anymore and is holding half my shit is. just disappeared.

In case he disappears I recall that there's a code like that:

player.moveto <ED> code

or player.moveatme <ED> code

Something like that, first time that my ED-E went missing I got ported to Lucky 38.

Second time, when I was on the desert and I noticed ed-e wasn't following me and I used the command I ported to an empty room, basically stuck. So save before trying it.

I did, a couple of times. Sending him back to the Lucky 38 and recruiting him back worked. I had the same problem with Arcade a handful of times and once I had to reload to solve the problem.

Gotta say, even though I hear Raul's quest/story is very lacking in content compared to some of the other companions, I really enjoy his backstory. Could listen to him talking about his experiences after the bombs fell all day.

It's also welcome in another sense. Namely that since New Vegas is so long after the war, it's nice to hear tales from the times when the world was "fresh post-apocalyptic".

[spoiler:792c954a97]Srsly, is it true that during the NCR ending, Cass just goes and does 'it' with a random NCR fledling?[/spoiler:792c954a97]

Not ED-E, the brotherhood scribe who contacts you via ED-E.

Here

LOL

Also, doesn't that message sound rather dubious anyway? We'd love to "examine your tech"? From what I understand of the western Brotherhood "examine your tech" means, "strip you naked" and either kill you or send you back out into the wastes.

I have to admit, after getting Raul to join up with me for a bit, he does add a good bit of back story. It was interesting to see what happened in Mexico during the great war.

He was also a foreigner that made sense geographically. None of that Tenpenny or Moriarty, which they never bothered explaining.

they did explained it from where they came. It just made no sense ;)

I know. But yeah, I remember when they said Tenpenny came from England, I had to turn of the game and think about that for a few mins lol.

i haven't yet found ed-e, but i enjoy k9, [spoiler:fba1afad0f]particularly after the good doc put lupa's brain in his noggin[/spoiler:fba1afad0f].

boone just didn't do anything for me as a character. i next met veronica, who i've used quite a bit (and i only just realized she is gay from this thread, which is cool, since as i mentioned in another post, i find the handling of arcade's homosexuality very refreshing and mature). cassidy, what can i say, i love her foul mouth and the whiskey rose perk, and she does good work with the gauss rifle. arcade was also fun, though i didn't have him for very long since we wrapped his quest up quickly (already had map points filled in near the places we needed to visit). i didn't use raul for long because he didn't stay alive for long.

but lily... i'm gonna have to say that she's generally my favorite. and i'm her little pumpkin. <3 cassidy's my choice for deathclaw hunting expeditions.
