Diablo 3 will shit all over Fallout 3 in sales. Starcraft 2 will as well. Just in South Korea I bet more people will buy Starcraft 2 than Fallout 3 will sell worldwide. A simple hack and slash and an iconic RTS will garner a much wider worldwide audience than a niche setting like post-apocalypse USA. Yes, it is a niche setting despite the sales that have been mostly on the back of a brilliant marketing strategy.

Of course it will, it would have outsold a Fallout 1 and 2 clone also. Fallout isn't a huge franchise.

The reasoning behind this is simple. Competitive online games are all the rave nowadays. Starcraft is still being played by rabid RTS players all over the world. Diablo 2 is the same as evident even by the NMA Diablo thread. Games like those never die. Making a game single player in this day and age limits it's market quite a bit. I really hope Vault 13 is what we all think it is.

That was already the case for past Fallout titles and Diablo 1/2. So what, action titles always sold better compared to the "traditional" RPGs (or cRPGs as some call it). Diablo was one of the few games that manged to sold more then 1 Million copies while Fallout 1 maybe 300 000 or 400 000 ? I dont have any numbers at my hand. I am just estimating, but still.

Already in the 19th century regardless of beeing respectively the most skilled actor of her time Sarah Bernhardt's fee was outtmached by the famous "farter" Le Petomane and his shows even included such audience like Edward, Prince of Wales or King Leopold II . People already back then seemed to prefer "pop culture" and toilet humor over other fine arts. Just as today Fallout 3 over Fallout 1/2 ...

Thats neither good or bad. It just means that a game like Diablo can be played in the same sense like Doom or Duke Nukem. Fast pased action without a need to think much.

To give a example. Before going to work or school you could start a game of Diablo or play a round of Doom/Quacke MP without any issues which is not something that works with games like Planescape or Fallout 1/2 in the same way. And that for a reason. The truth is that its awesome to have both kind of games. What happens sadly today is that a lot of the diverstiy the PC was known for is disapearing and you get many monotonous experiences. Particulary with RPGs where everything is going mainly for the action.
