Dead Space : about creating an atmosphere

Vault Fossil
A rather interesting video about creating the scary moments and atmosphere of Dead Space, the soon to be released survival-horror :

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38102.html

Makes you realise somehow why Fallout 3 fails to recreate the atmosphere of the first two episodes : playing retro music through the pip-boy and having Vault Boys here and there is just lazy design.

i really like how they implement the hud. always wondered why scifi shooters had huds that were inspired by bad 80s scifi movies. that one looks appropriate. ill buy it.

Isn't this the game that started out as System Shock 3?

Anyway, I'm not too excited by this game, I'll probably rent it, get a few spooks, then return it.

looks alright, but i hope the choppy aiming is due to being played on a console...

This game reminds me a famous quote....

"In space, no one can hear you scream"........

A mash of The Things and Alien. Promising idea but the end results? :?

Has anyone here ever heard of a game called Run Like Hell?
Because regarding story and setting Dead Space reminds me of that.

i like the setting, looking forward to this one.Haven't played a scary game for some time now.

Anyone but me pick this game up today? I'd dare to say it's the closest survival horror games have come lately to their 'roots' since the old haydays of resident evils and silent hills. Also its genuinely VERY creepy. Not to mention the art design, it rocks.

Judging by the trailer's gameplay moments, it's not that good. But I'd have to play it first to say for sure.

So, do you recommend it? How much does it resemble RE4?

The Combat DOES resemble RE4 quite a bit. Obviously the addition of stasis and "grav-gun" make a difference there. In fact the more and more I think about what to write here I realize that the game is incredible similar to RE4. The major difference is the upgrade bench in the game...(but wait..couldn't you upgrade guns in RE4 too?) where you can deck out your guns and suit who all have their own 'upgrade trees. Is it scarier than RE4? Defenetly In some places the game reminds me of my first sit down with Doom3 (which is a very good thing) The zero G and zero atmosphere sections obviously set it apart again and there is a couple short segments where you grab a hold of the Ishimura`s asteroid defense mass driver cannons (Giant awesome rail guns) to blast away debris or in one case [spoiler:1fdffc3010]a giant slug boss monster attached to the hull[/spoiler:1fdffc3010] the plot is good and I'm generally interested in where it`s going and the art direction is fantastic come to think of it a lot of the environments really remind me of the master's vault. One more part that is pretty cool are there are these quicktime sequences that arent exxaaaccttllyy quicktime moment like RE4 spoiler for info on that.

[spoiler:1fdffc3010]
you'll be walking down a hallway and a necromorph tendril... arm...whatever you wanna call it grabs you by the ankle and starts dragging you down the hall way to a gruesome death, you need to aim and hit it in it's elbow to try and break its hold on you. Thing is that your aiming is incredibly hindered and shaky which makes for a really nail biting creepy experience.[/spoiler:1fdffc3010]

please elaborate. the RE4 gameplay SUCKED harder than a vacuum on PC. hell, a guy coded a mouse aim patch in a matter of hours after release. because the porting guys were too careless to do it themself.

so saying a game's combat resembles RE4 is pretty much a big DO NOT BUY OR RISK GOING ON A MURDEROUS RAMPAGE.

Lets put it this way, if you didn't like RE4. Don't play dead space.

EDIT: then again I'm playing it on a 360, the PC version comes out in a couple days, I have no idea what the controls will be like on the PC but you're right about RE4 SUCKING on the PC the controls were shit. So who knows, maybe the delay between releases means that the PC version will have controls built for PC not a gamepad.

Only thing that sucked about a PC release was lazy porting - not adjusting controls for keyboard and mouse. So what, I bought a cheap gamepad and enjoyed it a lot. (Or are the gamepads cheap only in my country, I don't know..)
I know they should've done a better port, but what the hell, it's still a great action game once you've got the gamepad. Other than keyboard control issues it was still the same game, so I have no idea why so many people bitch about the PC release constantly.. I still play it from time to time. And also you can make it even better with some mods on PC.
But I gotta say that RE4 is not scary at all. I didn't even think it was meant to be scary, I just saw it as a shift from survival horror to survival action for a series. Which I thought was good cause RE games were never really scary to me after my first encounter with Silent Hill series.

But I'm hoping Dead Space will be scary, I haven't been scared by a game for a long time, and it's about time.. Really looking forward to this.

Whatifgaming about Dead Space PC :

"

For all our hardcore PC audience, that means everyone of you, we recently got hands on with an early copy of EA’s Dead Space for the PC. Good news? It’s still Dead Space!

Bad news? The controls are 2nd to the worst controls we’ve seen ever since Path of Neo came to the PC platforms. The smoothness compared to consoles is just not there, and from what we can tell it doesn’t seem like a patch can fix most of the issues. Inventory stack access becomes frustrating when fighting with monsters and aiming for on-the-fly changes. The controls just aren’t smooth. When contacting EA Redwood Shores regarding these issues:

Dead Space for PC is an equivalent experience to that on consoles. The controls are different and customizable, but we feel it’s in the best ability for the players to match what the console experience is like.

It’s ironic that it needs to be argued that it matches the console experience from the controls in EA’s eyes. The fact isn’t a matter of customization as much as it’s just not feasible to do most of the mapped controls on the keyboard and still maintain a fluid transition between interface and gameplay. If you have a console, go with the console version of Dead Space. The PC one is just not the same thing. If you’re tight on $20 extra for the console version, rent it and then settle for the PC one after. It’s such a shame.

FUCK...Not this game, DAMMNIT, NOT THIS GAME !
