Dialogue & Intelligence

A thread on the Bethesda forums speaking on dialogue and intelligence managed to extract some fairly clear answers. First community managers Matt Grandstaff forwards a bit from Emil:
Anyhow, I just chatted with Emil on the matter and he had this to say:

We don't have full dialogue options for characters with low intelligence. That is to say, you cannot simply "Ughhh" and "Agghh" your way through dialogue. That said, there are some Intelligence-specific dialogue options in the game.

That's all I've got for now
And lead designer Emil Pagliarulo clarifies a bit.
I know you guys haven't seen a lot of dialogue, but I really don't think you'll be wanting for options in that regard. The dialogue trees are pretty detailed, and there are plenty of response options, including those that check for skills, perks, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes, etc.

The one screenshot with dialogue that we did release -- shows a guy with a couple of "do you want to come with me" type of responses -- is actually an example of the smallest set of responses. The majority of NPCs have several more.

In general, what you can say depends on who the NPC is, all your combinations of stats and skills, events that have transpired, how you want to respond (different "attitudes" or "voices"), and more.
Sounds good.

Thanks Grimhound.

I hope that this is true. But it would still be better, to see some screens from a dialog with more options and maybe a small example of choice and consequence.

Maybe I can get through Fallout 3 without killing anyone; I'll just get the NPCs to do the dirty work for me.

:silly:

It does sound good, and Emil seems a lot less annoying than Todd to be honest.

By "detailed" dialog trees I do hope they mean a large branch instead of just one or two main branches with a few questions for each branch.

With many characters in Fallout you could select from more than four initial responses at first, I hope that's the case with FO3, and they're not just telling us there's a lot of little branches.

Sounds promising, but the fact that they shun showing any dialog is a bit suspicious... hope it won't gonna look like that:

1. Do you want to come with me?
1. Come with me! (CHA check)
3. Come with me or die!
4. um, die?
5. [strangle] (STR check)
6. Bye

... it DOES go together with what E.P. said...

There are plenty of conversation options. Here are possible dialogue paths:

Hi, will you do my quest for me?
R: Yes -> End dialogue
R: No -> Enter infinite loop of "Are you sure?" until you say yes
R: Die! -> Enter combat

Dialogue options are based upon the 'platform test' if you have a console it is assumed your character can only say "Ughhh" and "Agghh" and all dialogue is removed from the game and instead using the VATS system you can chose where to shoot them as your response (except for the nuts, that would be immature).

To clarify, he didn't say that speech and dialogue is linked to intelligence only that there are 'some intelligence specific dialogue options'.

In other words, in a few cases an intelligence check is made during dialogue but the speech stat is not linked to intelligence.

It sounds good, but then again, so do a lot of Bethesda's empty promises. I'll believe it when I see it.

He was doing well until he used the Yes/No dialogue screen as a frame of reference.

"Emil: The majority of NPCs have several more."

Several more? You mean in addition to those two totally awesome options we'll have several more? No way!

Check out VD here, handing out burns like a blowtorch. That quote never EVEN knew what hit it!

Real RPGs have at least 3 options, with the third one being cleverly reworded to pass off as a fourth option.

So ehm, why didn't you show any of the other dialogue paths or options that apparently all feature much better and expanded dialogue instead of one of the smallest ones?

What does AoD have to do with Fallout 3 again? My criticism of FO3 is based exclusively on comparisons with Fallout 1 and 2. Not with AoD, or with Baldur's Gate, or with Darklands, or even with Wasteland. I don't care if the game is much better or worse than Oblivion. It's [supposed to be] a Fallout game, in case you have forgotten.

I know you guys haven't seen a lot of dialogue, but I really don't think you'll be wanting for options in that regard.

Anyone else reminded of:

"Dialogue in Oblivion will be great. Trust us."

To be fair, they weren't specifically targeting Fallout fans with that claim. I think most of you here would agree there's a subtle difference.

And the dialogue itself wasn't bad, at least based on my roughly 30% playthrough, there just wasn't much in the way of choice and consequence. Probably because that was never the point.

Maybe after the game is released people will start calling Fallout 3 Oblivion with choice and consequence. And guns.
