Do you think it's perfectly okay to dismiss Fallout 3...

Quoth

First time out of the vault
And play this one instead? I haven't played Falluot 3, but if this is gonna feel like a better sequel to Fallout 2 I might save the money to buy New Vegas.

I'm going to go with yes. I don't think you would be missing out on all that much.

Besides the gameplay elements that have been improved upon, I just find the whole setting much more fun that the Capital Wasteland of Fallout 3.

New Vegas is better than Fallout 3, and storywise you'll have need to played Fallout 2 more than Fallout 3. So yeah, if you're going to play one, play New Vegas.

If you don't like FPSRPGs, don't play either.

You won't miss out on anything if you go straight to FONV simply because there's practically no continuity between the stories. Same world, different place and time.

That said, if you find you enjoy FONV, I'd go ahead and give FO3 a try. Unlike some people here, I think FO3 has its own charms and is a totally worthwhile experience. YMMV

Although I thought FO3 was decent, the fact that the engine is the same for this and the story is so much superior, FO3 can be ignored. Any enjoyment I found in 3 is present in New Vegas with more potency.

If you want a good Storyline, good characters and loads of action, then go for New Vegas.

If you want strong conpanions, good game setting and helpful glitches, go for FO3.

But it's to try them both, both are excellent in my opinion.

Go ahead, skip it. You won't miss a thing. The story and setting are insultingly shallow. The wrigting is bad, the voicework is lazy, the game is nothing more than ok action and metro tunnels. And your choices don't really have an impact on the world. So just jump to New Vegas. NV is the real Fallout 3.

Storywise, you don't need to play FO3 first, since it takes place in a completely different place than FONV.

Also, FO3 sucks balls, it's plain bad compared to NV.

New Vegas is a better game overall and better RPG offering more choice, options and playthrough paths.
But funny thing, you have to play FO3 to really appreciate that, cause its pretty much the same game but improved.

FO3 has good companions? What?

Anyway, OP, I'd suggest getting them both, FO3 is a bad RPG, and simply isn't a Fallout game, nor is it coherent at times, but there is some good exploration and fun stuff to do, you'll like it if you liked Oblivion.

FONV is just, pretty dam good.

The Fallout 3 setting is hardly mentioned in New Vegas where as you can meet someone who originates from Klamath talking about a tribal from Arroyo. I think Obsidian did the best they could wit the time and tools they were given.

You certainly do not need to play FO3 to enjoy New Vegas. Sometimes I wish I could go and unplay FO3 to help me appreciate NV more.

Actually, I'd agree with Erny. NV is a huge improvement from FO3, but I'd say that it's not as good as, say, FO2-- RPG elements are dumbed down, more shooter stuff, etc. Playing New Vegas without having played FO3 won't really allow you to understand why it's being heralded with such relief.

.
Short answer:

Don't bother with FO3 unless you're prepared to invest time installing mods to improve the experience. The questlines, dialogue, and gameplay of FO3 seem primitive by comparison to Obsidian's work.

Longer answer:

I view FONV as an evolution of the gameplay and concepts introduced in FO3. I've played both games extensively, and wouldn't feel comfortable moving backwards. In its vanilla state, without mods, FO3's gameplay feels somewhat primitive by comparison to FONV. Much of the gameplay I enjoy in New Vegas, only becomes available in FO3 via mods. Specifically: Hardcore mode, iron sights, reduced meds; limited ammunition. To my knowledge, no one has improved the shallow writing and character development via mods.

If you feel comfortable investing a lot of time tweaking and modifying FO3, then you'll probably enjoy the gameplay experience. Otherwise, stick to FONV.
