Don't Buy the Hype

Bump for a great well-written and prescient article, though very long, I couldn't help but reading all the way through, and I must say it was well worth the time. I was enlightened far more than I have expected. Its unfortunate that I didn't read this earlier, since it was posted over a year ago, and I confess that I didn't know much about Bethsoft's history until now. I'm a longtime Fallout fan and I willingly bought into the hype, hoping that finally someone would make a true sequel to this great series.

I guess every company, no matter how noble it might seem or how modest it's roots are, turns into greedy soulless profit-venturing machines.

It must have taken the OP a long time to collect all the overwhelming evidence of Bethsoft's shitiness and presenting them in a lengthy but well articulated piece. Respect to the OP

Thanks for the bump. Now I have read it, too.
Very interesting and throughout information.
I now like Beth even less.

Excellent article

I'm not buying FO3. I have never bought a Bethesda product. Now I have further reasons to distrust them.

Brilliant Article.

I didn't know a lot of stuff there. The link between Fallout 3 and Terminator/Skynet is tangible indeed, if you have played them you can see the parallels - dead scenery, rubble, wooden houses still standing, etc.

I praise you for taking the time to write and research this!

Looks great. Looks like you opened quite a can of worms. I was a Morrowind fan, but I do believe Oblivion was dumbed down, even from Morrowind. I should try Daggerfall then.

People tend to believe that the same developer means the same quality, but if they clear out the entire staff, including the people responsible for the games that were actually GOOD, what's left of that developer anyways?

I know I'm rather late at posting this so it's all looking back now, but game-content wise, you were quite right. A dumb, shallow game. Although slightly more RPG-ish than Oblivion, which is surprising, considering this game contains guns. I mean, this would have been even easier: "Where are the RPG elements?" "It's an action game! It has guns? Duh?"

Although I DID read some humble replies on Bethesda's side (such as, admitting mistakes on level caps and closed-ending (its not a lot, but ye know)) and the whole community destruction side of it doesn't seem to be working out. We must have lucked out of that one. I'm (as noticed by post count) very new to NMA but I just checked out DaC as well and it seems they haven't been biting the game either. Bethesda doesn't seem to make any effort at making them change their minds. Not a good thing, but definitely not as bad as as the whole Devide and Conquer technique.

I wonder if there's ever gonna be a new and truely good game out there. I'm starting to fear the worst. EA manages to release a game a week, most of which are hyped pieces of shit, in the mean time they make games "in association with" companies like Bioware, one of the spare companies that seemed somewhat independent. Guess that's over...

I guess we'll have to give it a go in gaming industry then d:

This is great, in my innocence I never knew that the industry was thus. I'm not surprised, since p(l)aying F4 made me aware of Bethy's manoeuvres. They got me, but it won't happen again. I think that the fans should react... like a massive petition by the communities Bethesda loves to ignore. Send to it outlets that reviews games and wherever else. I mean, seriously, I know petitions are kinda corny, but at least they would have to pretend to pay attention to some of these criticisms, and more people would be aware of ''Godd'' Howard and minion's strategy.

The necromancy is real.

Though in the original article, my eye was caught by the Douglas Goodall interview. That quote by Michael Kirkbride was Kirkbride's alone. Anyone familiar with Bethsoft.com's forums should know about MK and what a little bitch he is. I'm not defending Todd, but MK's hissy fit wasn't on behalf of the company. He was just upset that anyone would dare dislike Morrowind. The ironic part is that Goodall actually praised MK's writing earlier in the interview, but apparently that wasn't enough. MK's reaction to the Goodall interview is more in line with a first-time writer receiving criticism. It's hard for me to imagine him as anything besides an immature egomaniac now.

Very good article about the decline of the Fallout franchise due to Bethesda's marketing machine. 7 years ago and still making valid points relevant today.

Yeah, this thread was necroed so hard, it's made me believe in magic again.

It's a good article, but a little mouthy. Also, may I add, MK is an effin' moron. He wrote C0DA. How dare he?
