Dungeon Siege III

George Ziets/Rich Taylor Interview from Atomic Gamer

Also NMA gets mentioned
AG: Now, Dungeon Siege 3 is not really a game for the hardcore old-school RPG fan. Those guys, the guys from sites like Duck and Cover, or NMA Fallout, they haven't said much about Dungeon Siege 3, but overall they don't seem terribly hopeful that any developer is going to sell them the game they want to buy. Do you think those days are over?

RT: I don't think those days are over.

^ That's a very silly question to ask, considering that DS franchise has never been the definition of an old-school, classical RPG in any shape or form - in fact it's been quite the opposite. So the answer is more or less expected - of course they're not going to try to make it into a non-linear RPG with complex C&C.

Uhm, he didn't ask about DSIII. It was a general Question.

Read the interview.

Hmm, now that I look at it more closely, you're right.

He still does make it sound like there's universal hate for new games among old-school fans. Oh well, that's how stereotypes work.

Some Scores by German Reviewers are in

PC Games: 85%
Gamestar: 80%
MMagazine: 74%
360 Live 85%

Complaints vary widely so they probably come down to personal preference. Sadly in the review build state the M&KB controls were critizized by all of em (Well Gamestar and PC Games. The other two are consoles)

So, those that can't/won't use a pad I suggest trying out the demo before buying.

sheeesh why is it so fucking hard even after DECADES of ports to get the controls right for the PC ...

JeuxVideo.com also says to make your life easier and just plug in a controller from the get-go, apparently many moves require you to hold down 2 or more keys. They also said that gameplay quality and balance vary widely in between levels and characters, respectively, with the girl turning into a fire spirit being utterly broken. But they also praised the story and stated the character you choose makes some amounts of difference, in the ends it feels more like an action-RPG than a hack-and-slash.

All the german magazines said that the charachters are exceptionally well balanced, so this counts into what I said "varies wildly". We'll see when it comes out about that.

Demo is out on XBOX - Obsidian is already accused of ruining everything good about ARPGs/Dungeon Siege.

I really couldn't handle working at Obsidian if every game you release is viewed as a travesty against humanity.

Still more interested in seeing what PC gameplay looks like, but thanks.

Honestly, I wouldn't take the claims that it's terrible too strongly just yet. There are a lot of people who dislike Obsidian games for no discernible reason (I guess because they're not BioWare and don't have the best-looking games ever?); I'd much rather wait for thoughts from GameBanshee, RPG Codex etc.

Well its mostly because people expected a Diablo clone with strong MP.

Edit: Though, there also seems to be some good impressions by D2 players if just for the singleplayer.

Watched the vid, don't see what the problem is. Looks exactly like the older DS games, except with updated GFX, more interesting combat and actual dialogue.

DS series was never Diablo 2 so I don't see where those expectations may be coming from, other than ignorance.

It's especially funny because GPG were the ones who wanted to go that way in the first place.

That is from a interview with Chris Taylor (GPG)

RPS: Tons of loot.

CT: Yeah. Really. And a progression through a world. But while historically we’ve been light on story, they’re going heavy on story. We’re trying to pull up our story-pants, and we’ve made positive steps with each iteration. Our company is very mechanical and technological, so [Gas Powered Games] tend to start with a technological innovation, and then design the game around that. The way Obsidian works, they do a better job of balancing all the various elements. They have a beautiful engine called the Onyx engine which is balanced and really state of the art, and they’ve got great storytelling, and then they’ve got good gameplay instincts on top of that.

I daresay they’re doing a better job than I would have done. I know that’s bull, but it’s true, because I’ve really taken to focusing on RTS.
