Everything in Fallout 4 looks too new

Aside from being bulky and greenskinned they look like just ugly humans to me...
By the way, I've just noticed that one of them has a bayonet on his rifle. That's kinda neat. Bet they can't use them, bur expecting that would be too much.

Melee with guns has been confirmed for players, though, so it's probably safe to assume NPCs can do it, too.

I think Beth just wanted to make their mutants look more like the Mariposa Mutants after all the complaints about yellow orcs. Or maybe after NV they thought they looked better green. So they retcon'd them. They do look better now, in any case.

Or the dreaded third option: It's another new strain.

Ugh, another strain, Institute Super Duper Mutants, made my dipping androids on a third strain of FEV that the Institute got their hands on before the war....

That was mostly a joke. That's...probably too stupid to actually happen.

My money's on retcon. Boston is close enough that the 87s could have gotten that far.

It's possible they're a new strain, and Bethesda might make a stil stupid but not too stupid explanation. My bet is they're the unholy offspring of Mariposa mutants and the CW mutant strain.

I prefer the idea that somebody brought the Vault 87 strain of FEV to the Commonwealth and basically modified it, which is why these super mutants look different.

I agree with Crni Vuk about those buildings looking like Lego blocks, those mutants look like orcs from Skyrim without the teeth as well as having those silly titles in their names like Skyrim's Dragons. Should've named him "Super Mutant Cannon Fodder" and thebackground buildings have a Borderlands-like cartoony look to it...am I wrong about that or is it just me?

The question though is, why have them there in the first place? I mean even in New Vegas they didn't really played THAT much of a role outside of a few quests. You had one location with them as enemy and that was it. In F3 they have been like all over the place, at least for DC and that vault you have to visit. In F4 they seem to be just generic low-level enemies that you beat till you get to the behemoth or some high level raider or what is replacing the Enclave. I don't mind Super Mutants really or the BoS and Enclave even, if it's done in a way like New Vegas did. But since Vault Tech or some other generic company has this FEV virus now ... I guess EVERY Fallout game will contain them. And what was once a unique plot of Fallout 1 becomes the generic orc/ogger to fight for the player ... because you need something else as target practise outside of raiders collecting human meat.

It seems like a 'comfortable' apocalypse, rather than a destructive event that wiped almost everything out. (this describes Bethesda's Fallout rather well)

I have the same with Boston, the buildings are way to much intact including that government building with the golden dome and that monument on bunker hill. That stuff should have collapsed a long time ago due to lack of maintenance and the shockwaves of the nuclear detonations.

If anything, I think the setting should have been more like what we see in Lonesome Road (minus the torn apart land and canyons which were caused by nuclear armed missiles going off in their silos).
Lots of 'skeletons' of buildings or collapsed buildings with only a few standing, painstakingly restored with various kinds of materials the occupants managed to salvage from all over the place.

I would like to point out that it's going to be set in the commonwealth, which is supposedly going to be one of the more civilized areas of The West Coast. Its entirely plausible that the ruins have simply been rebuilt.

As for your suggestion for it to look more like Lonesome Road, I don't think that's a good example. Lonesome Road took place just after a nuke hit, and The Divide was totally destroyed. I think it should be something more like how the Boneyard is described in the Vault Dweller's Memoirs. With the "skeletons" of buildings everywhere, although a few major buildings still intact. Maybe the outskirts of Boston with a few trees, not like the stupid dead trees in Fallout 3, more like an autumn type feel to it, where the trees have a few leaves still on them.

I assume that you mean the east coast, but what Zimmer in Fallout 3 says is contrary to the Commonwealth being one of the more civilized places.

The Commonwealth itself is nothing but a war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair. Inside the sealed environment of the Institute, however... But... the Institute's affairs are none of your concern. Your undeveloped mind couldn't even begin to comprehend what we've accomplished. - Dr. Zimmer.

He's doesn't seem wrong so far, because we see from the E3 trailer that raiders abound and super mutants have a large presence in Boston. There are other accounts of the Commonwealth that aren't as desperate, such as Tobar making trips to the Commonwealth, but I think Zimmer's right about the region in general. Personally, I'm a little upset that the super mutants have such a large presence in Fallout 4. That sentiment also applies to the BoS most likely being one of the main factions.

@crack_assault_paladin, I think you should seriously consider to scale down your amount of vitriol. We have no problem with sarcastic comments here and there, not even if they are directed at NMA, but seriously, if every single one of your posts is just that ... than why bother? Say about Bethesda what ever you want and how much you think that their developers are wrong, but at least you should abstain from insults, no matter how much you dislike them.

We are after all talking just about a game here and not drug dealers or such.

Here is the explanation that is brought to you by the National Clean up Paint up Fix up Bureau with the cooperation of Federal Civil Defense Administration.

Atomic tests at the Nevada Proving Grounds (later the Nevada Test Site) show effects on well-kept homes, homes filled with trash and combustibles, and homes painted with reflective white paint. Asserts that cleanliness is an essential part of civil defense preparedness and that it increased survivability.

Sadly, most Bethesda fans assume No Mutants Allowed is a community completely full of people exactly like crack_assault_paladin, and that not continuously insulting Bethesda gets you kicked out. Rumours, eh?

Nevermind "glittering gem of hatred" or "jewel" or whatever. NMA is exactly like nearly every faction in a proper Fallout (how meta is that). A community no one can ever get to, and is seen as xenophobic, so the only thing people on the outside can do is make up rumours about them.

We're the... Uh... Boomers? Anyone have any better examples?
