FacetiousF*ckBoy's Fallout 4 review

Yknow for a while I thought Phipps just kinda had lower standards than everyone else. he didn't ask too much and so long as he had a fun-ish time, he would forgive a game its faults and not get too bogged down in negativity. Hes nothing like me, but hes cheery enough that I can let that go. BUT his bashing of the Witcher 3 makes me think there's something else is going on here, some true fanboyism at work, perhaps....

I feel the need to nip this in the bud before it becomes part of the forum lore about me. The Witcher 3 is probably the best video game of all time. I actually defend it vigorously on the CD Projekt Red forums because the people there have savaged it as inferior in quality to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and a hatchet to the lore of the franchise.

Which, admittedly, like Bethesda is true to a point as they had no hesitation to change vast sections of Sapkowski's original lore and pretty much wholesale ignored all of the political, socio, and economic developments of the second game to tell a less nuanced story between a whitewashed Nilfgaard and the North's evil Radovid. But I wrote a six part essay about the nuances of its politics and, again, rank my all time favorite games as the follows.

1. The Witcher 3
2. Skyrim
3. Fallout: New Vegas
4. Fallout 3
5. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
6. Dragon Age: Origins
7. Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
8. Fallout 2
9. Saints Row 2
10. Fallout

Quite possibly the ONLY thing wrong with the Witcher 3 is it's largely empty map. It's a mature, sexy, and well-written title with amazing acting, graphics, and writing. The DLC is actually even better than the main game too, despite the absence of Ciri.

Wait, why isn't Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 tied for the top spot? I thought you gave them both 10/10? Or are you being indecisive about your opinion here?

As an aside, my advice is that you play more RPGs if those are the only games on your list for the moment. Try out more of the classics and look beyond any superficial qualities.

I expanded it more. Honestly, I'm tempted to move up Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines but it's 2/3rds of the best video game of all time and 1/3rd just stabbing things. Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2 are games which I very much enjoyed but just didn't stick with me the same way as the Witcher or Fallout games.

I didn't actually give Fallout 4 a 10 out of 10 until I came to this forum. I'm annoyed with myself because I went to look at my original review and it turned out I gave it a 9 out of 10. Hell, if I regret giving a game 10 out of 10 it's Dragon Age: Inquisition. That game has NOT aged well in the back of my brain.

How could you have missed the irony of that.

:puke:
Why? Don't tell me, because the Stormcloaks and Imperials were grey? Cause being barely thought out and described does tend to make you 'two sided'.

The Stormcloaks vs. Imperials conflict is one I always wanted to write an essay on because I think a lot of players miss something. The conflict is IRRELEVANT. Bethesda smartly gave both sides good and evil qualities but made it something which is just a distraction from the actual threats of the land. If they had done the same with the Institute and the Brotherhood then I would have been more impressed. Instead, they seemed so obsessed with the shooting, they forgot that destroying either side ends in the murder of children.

The Sole Survivor needs the Child Killer Flaw!

:)

But no, I love Skryim for simply the immersive beauty, lore, and sense of power I have as the Dragonborn.

Beauty yes. Lore... Morrowind was better but yes. Power? Sorry but no. You have very little actual power, give me a good example of this power. Unless it;s merely being good at killing stuff.

I actually felt the Dark Brotherhood quest gave me the largest sense of actual power in the game. I never got the sense of being the head of the Companions, College of Magi, or even Thieves Guild. However, with the DB I felt like I really was their spiritual leader and the head of the network.

I also loved the Dawnguard expansion as being the Lord of the Vampires with Kate Beckinsale was awesome--albeit, I really wanted her as my bride.

You mean sense of power you have because of no level cap and as a result no C&C for your characters skills?

In Skyrim, that's fine because you're a demigod like Herakles.

In Fallout 4, it's just confusing. Why is the Sole Survivor the ultimate badass to end all badasses?

But all the time you were doing work for others. I mean sure, you do that for all questlines, but at least they don't make you the Chosen one.

Yeah, as Arl Howe said, "Titles seem to breed titles" in Skyrim but almost none of them were necessary.

Fallout 3, you becoming a Paladin was a big deal and that's after a comparatively lengthy series of services for the BOS.

In Fallout 4, you get it on your second week of the job.

Hell, I thought it was brave the Brotherhood of Steel is all but completely irrelevant in Fallout 2. I think Elder Maxson giving you Paladinship should have been reserved for you destroying the Institute and he only should have given you the status of Knight after you took down Danse.

It would have required different dialogue but I wouldn't have had you promoted if you spared Danse and you'd "only" be a Knight if you spared him.

I'm glad Bethesda showed some restraint by not letting you challenge Maxson for the status of Elder or Danse as the BoS shouldn't be Necromongers.

I hated that, the BOS are my favourite faction after the Legion. Well, only the Fallout 1 Brotherhood.

I love the BOS but I like them to have setbacks because I'm their abusive spouse who blames them for making me shoot them with Mini-Nukes.
