For me the perfect Fallout would be New Vegas, if it hadn't been so rushed along. I think New Vegas really shows the growth of the franchise, really shows what a group of passionate developers, people who care about the franchise can do, and I also prefer the FPS gameplay over the old isometric games (heresy to some, I know).
But the thing is, and the reason I love to hang out in here, despite the fact that I'm not crazy about the old isometric gameplay (even in modern games, like Pillars of Eternity), is that Fallout 1 and 2 are awesome RPGs, the second one in particular (in my humble opinion), and that matters to me MUCH, MUCH more. And that's why I fell in love with the old games, not because of gameplay, but because they are great rpgs in a great setting. New Vegas just adds a gameplay that I like better and more "modern" mechanics, if you catch my drift, but it does, at times, feel a bit rushed even after all these years, which makes me like Fallout 2 over it at times. That said, modded right New Vegas is one my favorite RPGs of all time, if not THE favorite.
The fact that is Bethesda making the games now and raking in the millions, while the people that are passionate about it get left out is just heart-breaking for me. I've never fell in love with a universe like I did with Fallout's, and it makes me want to bang my head against the wall that it's being ruined with each installment. But NMA is catharsis, and I didn't regret joining even for one minute
