I found inconsistent use of
Code:
Code:
Code:
´
Code:
'
in the .msg files. Some only contain one or two variants, others have them all mixed together.

Which is the preferred one?

you're actually making the mod ? because i haven't seen important people on the forum for weeks

@Killap, my copy of the Fallout 2 Hint Book indicates that the Great Wanamingo Mine Elevator (explicitly identified as the one where Frog Morton is hiding out) isn't supposed to work unless the nearby power generator (on the surface) is repaired.

I don't know if this was scrapped because of problems with the script, or maybe if the Chosen One comes from elsewhere in the caverns before repairing it might prove inconvenient to have to backtrack from underground because the elevator won't work.

In any event, the explosives around the generator (at least in vanilla?) makes me think that it was meant to be one of those "wading-through-hell-and-back" things, perhaps increasing for some characters the difficulty of the game.

In any event, has this ever been pointed out and is it worth implementing?

No, I don't actually make the mod. :P
Though killap seems to be busy, he will surely check this thread when he has time again.

I consider the mixed use of those symbols an issue, though not one that harms playing. But if the mod shall look professional, it should be resolved.

Agreed. I noticed that a while back, too. I don't know if it will be a "blocking" issue on the newest RP, but Killap and everyone are putting in so much effort I won't be surprised if this is the last Killap-driven RP release for a loooong time, so... would be nice to fix. :)

Well, if the ' symbol is the standard, then the fix is really easy. Any text editor with find and replace functionality can do it without too much modder intervention, and consistently replace all of the other ones. Of course, it implies going a file at a time. Maybe there is some kind of sed tool for Windows (I believe killap uses Windows) to do it in a more automated way. The other ones implies some intervention, since substituting every occurence of ' would malform apostrophes in words, and the others require to check if it's the start or the end of the quoted sections.

I noticed something funny.

One of the Ranger safehouses has a weather vane on the wall. If you examine it, the description says "This simple weather vane helps the people of Shady Sands study the weather". So, since Shady Sands doesn't exist anymore (and the location is wrong anyway), any chance some changes could be made for it?

Not like it's a serious issue. Don't really care about it tbh.

Also, why in the hell some of my companions NEVER heal themselves even if I give them Stimpaks, or supers? Especially Vic doesn't seem to heal. He just runs away and gets himself killed.

And I have the "use stimpaks when hurt a lot" option for all my companions.

Marcus and Sulik seems to be the only ones who actually heal themselves properly.

I've noticed that as well and I'm about to finish 2.1.2b so I guess that part wasn't altered. (or it can't be)

For me though I rarely see ANY OF THEM them healing themselves. (checked their combat settings).

Possible reasons imho: (guesses)

They are not soldiers so they don't know how to act/they panic (especially Vic).

They would heal but don't have a chance to do so. What this means is that maybe NPC healing themselves works only with enemies that do damage "slowly" aka few hit points per round.

With tougher ones like Enclave patrol they are dead before the healing is triggered.

Just thinking out loud. Never had chance to verify that as on early parts of the game I don't give the fuckers any stimpaks :P

It's also strange that they don't even seem to heal outside of combat (are they even supposed to?) with stimpaks. For example, I had 6 stimpaks and 2 supers on Cassidy. After he was severely wounded and the combat was over, instead of using them, he says that he's hurt pretty bad and asked that do I have any stims. :l Myron did though, but he's a pussy anyway, so.. :D

Does the combat setting "Use stimpaks when hurt a lot" mean that they are in Almost dead condition, or severely wounded?

And what about "Hurt a bit"? Is that for "Wounded" or "Severely wounded " condition?

Enough of companions for now. I noticed something else too.

After I had bought the wine from the Abbey for Father Tully (two or three bottles), I brought it to him, and got the 500XP reward.

Later in the game, I got the quest to inform Father Tully's and Brother Samuel's whereabouts to each other. When I went to Tully, and told him what Samuel was doing, I got option to give Tully the extra bottle of wine I had bought. So I completed the same quest TWICE, and got the usual 500XP reward.

On "Use stimpacks when hurt a bit" they do heal themselves.

This seems to be the only setting that works but they are often more than "hurt a bit" :)

On "Use stimpacks when hurt a lot" they would rather need some equivalent of Phoenix Down :P

Hmmm..."Use reanimate kit on Cassidy"

I know Notepad++ allows you to open an arbitrary number of files simultaneously and it allows you to do find/replace across all open tabs at once, so that might help at least some for such an endeavor.

I'd be happy to take a crack at it. A couple of questions for anybody who knows (I think this will benefit any other volunteers, too):

- To whom should we send the revised files?
- What's the easiest/best way to get all the dialogue files together?
- Is there a "master list" of these files so we don't miss anything?

In case you haven't gotten round to to your epic quest for the uniform apostrophe yet, I'd use Windows Grep rather than notepad++ to make replacements in multiple text files; you don't have to open multiple tabs or anything like that. I think in general it's indispensible when modding, but maybe that's just me.

I've been using Sublime Text 2 for this, in case anyone cares. ;-)

I have done the following:

- Replaced all left curly quotes with right curly quotes where they needed to be switched (it was not a "replace all" operation)
- I replaced the acute accent with right curly quotes in the few places I found it

@Oppen, the straight quotes are indeed too frequent ("21147 matches across 583 files," according to ST2) to replace with curlies.

I'm concerned about "demoting" the existing curly quotes, though (5851 matches across 196 files for the right curly before any of my changes). In many cases the mixing of quote styles is in dialog from Vanilla, too.

@Sotho Tal Ker and anyone else, does a mixture of straight quotes and "proper" use of the curly quotes that were there already sound good?

*wakes from his slumber*

Well, not really slumber, just too much RL.

Yeah, I really need to buckle down and finish this release. It's the last content addition that has been a blocker and I just haven't had the time/desire recently to mod. This addition probably shouldn't have happened, but it's too good to not include.

But, bug reports do continue to trickle in, so perhaps the delays have been worthwhile. ;) Plus, the latest unreleased unofficial patch has also gone through testing, which is good news for all.

The plan is to spend my entire weekend working on this, cause it's gotta happen.

In regards to the apostrophes you all are discussing, the mod is indeed inconsistent about it, depending upon what my writers send me.

@JimTheDinosaur: Windows Grep is something I use on a daily basis, so I will definitely make use of that. Plus I have my Windows machine configured to run all unix progs/commands anyway, so I have ways to quickly accomplish these tasks.

@merenbach: It sounds like you are in the process of doing this for me? I assume you are using the latest files in this beta release?

I'll keep everyone posted on progress.

@killap: Yes, I installed a fresh copy of 2.2 public beta prior to beginning the process.

- Acute accents are now curly quotes.
- Left single curly quotes have been changed to right curly quotes when they substitute for the first syllable of a word ('bout, 'round, 'til) or where they are used in a standard contraction (I'm, won't).

Those are the "easiest." Next, straight quotes:

- Whenever there is a space, then a group of letters/numbers, then a straight quote, then a group of letters/numbers, then a space, it seems reasonable to assume that the word is a contraction and to use a right curly quote. This is done. Relevant search regex for nerds like me or anyone wanting to do some checking:

/ ([A-Za-z0-9]+)'([A-Za-z0-9]+) /

- Same for space, letters/numbers, straight quote, space--this is either a contraction or the end of a quote (never the beginning):

/ ([A-Za-z0-9]+)' /

That leaves only 5566 straight quotes across 462 files. I will be happy to work out some additional regexes as time permits.

@Killap: Should these be submitted directly to you and, if so, is the email address on your home page the one I should use?

Yeah, once you've got all this done just send it to that address. Please include a text file outlining the changes you've made.

Before the final release, what about some soundtrack upgrade?

Personally, I'd prefer to hear the original music of Vault 13 from Fallout 1 ("Vault of the Future;" 06VAULT.ACM) in Fallout 2 in there as well.

The actual track ("Vats of Goo;" 08VATS.ACM) is heavy used in the game in many other locations -- Broken Hills, SAD, EPA and outside of Mariposa Military Base, I suppose... so nobody should miss it.

And there are many more of interesting tracks, for example:

* Metallic Monks (04BRTHRH.ACM)
* Second Chance (15SHADY.ACM) -- to Vault Village, probably...
* Radiation Storm (04GLOW.ACM)
* ...

Fallout 2, especially with the RP is a very long act so that would be cool for a bit of variegation, wouldn't it? :)

What about this?

And if not, is it possible to do it somehow manually? I simply want to hear "Vault of the Future" in the Vault 13, "Metallic Monks" in SAD, "Radiation Storm" in EPA and "Second Chance" in Vault Village. Because the actual track – "Vats of Goo" – is a bit over-used in the whole game in my opinion.

I have Fallout Classic Collection and yes, I've purchased the original, so I can simply import the music from FO1 (the pack include FO1, FO2 and FO Tactics).

Some of the other players and fans were excited about this option as well.

Great.. As soon as I climb up the stairs in the Hubologists base, the game crashes. :( I feel like I've had this before, long time ago.

Too bad that my 2nd latest save is about 2 months away (in game time of course! :p ).
