...just got a newer gaming laptop. had no clue how much of a disaster getting games to run on windows 8 is.

finally got fallout 2 to run on its own, but i've never used this mod (heard its incredible). i had to change the draw ddl (rendering it obsolete) to get it to run. because of that when i install the mod, it says it cant load the cities.

can someone in layman's terms give me some aid?

thanks in advance.

Why did you modify ddraw? Also how did you go about installing F2 (GoG/Steam) and did you use the installer version of the RP?

Fallout 2 would not run whatsoever until I modified. I renamed the file, adding--- .old to the end. This, I believe renders it useless.

I am a computer idiot (work in sports) and downloaded to steam. I run steam as the adminstrator (that was the only way i could get Fallout 3 and Skyrim to say Play and not Install at startup).

The game files are in C:/ProgramFilesx86/Steam/SteamApps/common/Fallout2

So wait, you renamed ddraw before you installed the RP? Didn't the RP just copy over a new one? I'd suggest uninstalling F2 (be sure to delete SteamApps/common/Fallout2), reinstalling via Steam, and then installing the RP via the installer from my signature. Don't run the game until AFTER installing the RP. Also be sure to tell Steam to not update game files. I think you just right click on Fallout 2, choose properties (maybe) and then there should be the option under one of the tab.

If this is what you already did, then I suggest going through the same process I just outlined but instead install the game to a different directory. Steam lets you do this.

I don't have Steam in front of me at the moment, so sorry, I can't get specific details.

I only started the game a few days ago, using RP 2.2. All I've done if most of Klamath, The Den and Gecko, but It's still more than I'd like to redo. Would there be too much risk of stuff breaking? Should I just stick with 2.2?

I haven't created a character. But it boots up and see the RP 2.3 at the bottom of the front screen. Just had to change it to run as admin and make sure it didnt run in compatibility mode.

I appreciate your help. Can't wait to see the changes.

I don't think you run a big risk, I just give the warning in the event odd issues come up. Reports from fresh installs make my life way easier.

I'd suggest finishing off those areas completely and then installing RP 2.3. Just don't go to any new areas until you have to and then install the update at that point.

Huh, I'll just blame Win 8. Took me years to go from XP to Win 7 and it will be a cold day in hell when I go to another version. Anyway, you should also see a rock behind the guy at the start of the game. If it says RP 2.3 then you should be good to go. Don't hesitate to post any other issues you run into. Enjoy!

.

This should have been released earlier... but the extra time did allow us to pack in more bug fixes and even a Russian translation.

So that's what the wait was all about. ;-) Well I do happen to have a Russian brother-in-law and he already has a Fallout 2 CD - I sent it to him for Christmas a year or two ago.

Congratulations Killap (and all others involved in this project) - it really is a great accomplishment. And Merry Christmas!!!

EDIT:

Took me years to go from XP to Win 7

I'm still using XP, I'll probably go to Win 7 at the last possible moment.

I'm gonna have to stick with 2.2. After instaling 2.3, the main menu wasn't working. I couldn't move the cursor, with my mouse or with my keyboard.

Hmm, interesting. Sounds like something with sfall or the high res patch. I suspect the latter. What happens if you edit f2_res.ini and change ALT_MOUSE_INPUT to 1? Also, what's your setup (OS, etc)? And lastly, experiment with various settings with the high res patch like no directx 9, etc.

I hear you. I only switched over a year ago. Used it for a good 10 years (was using Win 2000 before that). Honestly, Win 7 has grown on me, but you have to turn off a few features for that.

@killap,
That is very amazing news! Thank you very much for your dedication and patience fixing all those bugs! So, when exactly can we expect the sources to be released?

This is the best Christmas present. Mind you, I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but very much looking forward to it. Thanks for all your efforts hardly seems sufficient, but there it is nonetheless. Much gratitude and appreciation.

*waiting since 3 months for new patch, getting christmas hopes up*

looks like I called it :P there are quite a few new options since 2.2 if I'm not mistaken. I hope that ammo balance mod doesn't make gauss crap :P

is it still correct that it'd be best if you grabbed all npcs as soon as possible for leveling purposes? companions can level 6 times or? and they level 1 time each 3 times you do. so, if you pick up one at lvl30, it's too late already, right? (I'm looking forward to the dialogue option to recruit Lenny as well)

Thanks for the xmas present, it nullifies my 1st present. That was, the power distributor to my pc died lol.. :eyebrow: .. on christmas.. but having no cell since 4 months cause the company screwed up, nothing really surprises me anymore. I just hope 2014 is gonna be better than 2013...

Thank you so much for this wonderful Xmas present, killap!

May the bear never find obstacles on his path!

lol just found new grind spot. chance to successfully move HALF a square is about 10%, it's ridiculous. I got 5 luck, is that connected to random encounters?
