Fallout 3 at E3 - Armchair Empire

Your logic got flawed by not discriminating between a series and a sequel.

For example, Final Fantasy 2 is not a sequel of Final Fantasy 1. It's the next in a series, but not a sequel.

I don't know what that says for Fallout 3... but I get the impression that Fallout is becoming a series, where Fallout 3 is the next in the series, but not a direct sequel to Fallout 2, as the stories aren't related except in universe and setting. That doesn't make it a spin-off, It just means that the story and legacy of the vault dweller from Fallout 1 and his descendant in Fallout 2 are finished (probably). A closed book. I don't mind that one bit, it's perfect as it is anyway, and that specific story arc doesn't need to be expanded upon. But the world does need more elaboration, and they can do that from any other part of the United States, while starting a fresh story arc, continuing the series. Think of the way story arcs work in some comic boks as a prime example of this.

Then by that logic, why does the Brotherhood and the Super Mutants have to be on the East Coast.
We could consider their chapters 'closed' as well.

I'm going to argue and say that without those two amazing staples of the fallout franchise, the game would go from pretty cool to "just another post apocalypse game".

If anything, it signifies the widespread effects of the first fallout and the ramifications it can have on even remnote locations.

Meh, I put it more under the category of "We really don't have ideas of our own, and if displacing 'iconic' factions screws up the lore more, so be it, because we are the creators of Fallout now!"

While both the Brotherhood and the Super Mutants are indeed a significant part of Fallout, Fallout doesn't revolve around them, and we could have lived without them in a new Fallout game.

You are right, we could have.

But would you have wanted to?
Or would you rather they find a way to make it work?

Honestly?
I would have preferred that neither factions had appeared and that instead the developers had chosen the daring path of creating * gasp * complete new and perhaps memorable factions.

I mentioned plenty of suggestions in my earlier posts.

If you need guys in power armour and heavy weaponry, how about this?
The descendants of the soldiers that were assigned to Washintgon DC before the War, when they realised that the missiles and the bombs were going to fall they 'headed for the hills' so to speak.
Now several generations later they have returned to retake back what was theirs; Washington DC, and kick out all the raider and mutant scum that has claimed it as their own.

As for Super Mutants; why not loads of raiders and new human mutants?
Scavengers; the descendants of humans who got 'hit' by the radiation of the bombs, not enough to turn them into Ghouls, but enough to make them a somewhat different kind of human.

They are more smaller and thin shaped than normal humans, and more animalistic in behavior.
Though it is possible to have a conversation and trade with them, travellers have to be wary as scavengers are known to turn on people if they see an opportunity.

They survive by searching the remnants of the capital and other towns for food and supplies they need, but occasionally they also attack caravans and small settlements.

Here, that wasn't so hard, was it?

Edit: one more idea I had in mind.

Behemoths (ignore the Super Duper Mutant connection)

Pre War anti riot robots that were deployed in Washington DC just before the War to put down the riots caused by fear for the New Plague and the food and resource shortage.

Unfortunate due to their maintenance bays surviving the War these things are still up and running, patrolling the streets as programmed two hundred years ago.

They come in various sizes, from small compared to a human to very large.
While the small ones may be easily dispatched the bigger ones require more strategy.
Interesting note: the big ones generate a powerful electromagnetic field that screws up other nearby electronics, if your Pipboy is displaying nothing but static, be very, very wary.

The strategy of handling these things would be to avoid them, try to find the security passes they demand when you run into them, or trick them with a good hacking skill, or fight them if you feel brave enough (and pack much fire power).

No not at all and I applaud your creativity, but id rather have the icons i know and love.

What would be even cooler is if they had super mutants, bos, AND the groups you mentioned.

two rivalling groups with power armor would be fantastic...

but it might seem a little too much like the enclave.

I would prefer if there wasn't BoS and SM. Frankly, when I saw the PA in the trailer for the first time I thought that it's an ordinary US Army soldier.
