I just don't see what's offensive about it.

I didn't say it was offensive, I said it was racist. Listing a bunch of racial identities and then picking out one to list as a ethno-cultural identity is racist.

Potatoe patato

Meh. FeelTheRads' negativity at the Perks is a bit far-fetched here,

Don't really have anything against the perks, except the damage part which is simply stupid.

In fact I'm for more misogynism and racism in games in general.

I was just making fun of Petey's nonsensical excuse.

involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others
Supremacism. Not racism.

dict.org on racism said:
discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race

dict.org on discrimination said:
The act of discriminating, distinguishing, or noting and marking differences.

Apart from what some people think "Affirmative Action" is positive discrimination, not only because it discriminates against the "out-group", but mainly because it marks a distinction between races.

RACISM is not necessarily a bad thing. It's just a concept and it has no inherent value judgement. "Ethnicism" would probably be a more PC and more modern word, because "race" carries a negative connotation (because, historically, racism is linked to racial supremacism), but it's already taken.

Just because the TV tells you so, doesn't mean all "bad words" describe bad things. Innuit really are stubbier and Ethiopians really do seem to be better runners -- it's just wrong to assume there's no shades of grey.

Don't be mistaken, though: other ethnicities (and sexes!) can be supremacist, too! Just think of the Black Power movement or Feminism (not to be confused with egalitarianism, mind you).

Maybe they used "African-American" instead of "black" or whatever because if you are gonna be let into the vault, and you lived in the US and were US citizen, you probably are not Jamaican, or Zimbabwean, or Nairobiean, therefore black, and are truly and only African-American ?

She doesn't like the Lady Killer perk because it's chauvinistic. Pete says that it's not, because there's also Black Widow.

It's not racism if you're hated in return. Good one, Pete & The Afro-Americans.
Pete didn't said that the perk isn't chauvinistic. He only stated that including such perk in game doesn't make developers chauvinists.

And I think it's not about liking (in fact, she picked this perk :)). She just found it is not consistent with political correctness. Anyway, I would love to hear response: "F**ck the political correctness."

Supremacism. Not racism.

Dictionary.com considers it to be racism. There are thousands of other definitions from online and physical dictionaries which also consider racism to be the belief that certain races are inferior/superior.

Racism explained as discrimination against specific races would (at least I would expect) assume negative discrimination - discrimation because it is believed a race or races are inferior/superior.

Also I don't know about Feminism being supremacism - at least not the more mainstream discourses :D

No rly.

Dictionary definitions don't work like that. There is no definite dictionary, so you have to check more than one if you can and see what they have in common.

Supremacism is a distinct concept that is NOT integral to racism. It's in the words as well:

racism = race + -ism
(i.e. an ideology based on the concept of "races")

vs.

supremacism = supremacy + -ism
(i.e. an ideology based on the supremacism of one group towards another)

Racism isn't the same as racial supremacism, it just often has a connotation of supremacism, so you'll see it used that way a lot. It's a matter of context, though.

If you don't understand how language works, don't be dissin' mah dictionary skillz, bro'.

I'm just going to say that in order to be african american you must possess dual citizenship in both a country in africa and america.

Why are there even 'races' at all? Does it have any meaningful impact on the game other than appearance? Are the stats different for each race (that would be considered racist I suppose), or can you be barred from certain places/people/quests because of race? Mass Effect allowed you to make characters of varying racial backgrounds without actually specifying race.

If it just determines appearance, then it's simply stupid and unnecessary.

Well, unnecessary doesn't mean it shouldn't be in the game, only that it could be left out without harming it.

Now, I agree that customization is not always a good thing - Oblivion's much lauded character generator had way too many options which would often result in nonsensical characters; the first thing I do when using such systems is moving the slider all the way up or down in each option to better see what it affects, and there this got me a glowing-white freak with an actually sunken-in face and blue beard - but removing it just because of naming sounds a bit extreme.

Lord.... Seriously guys, in america you are african american, not black.

Seriously, there is not a single "government" form about race or ethnicity that refers to someone as black.

They are either african or they are african american.

As I believe character creation is done at birth, it would make sense for the race designation to be a government type of designation.

So therefore, black is african american whereas asian is asian and hispanic is hispanic, just like any form in america today. and caucasian is caucasian.

And yes it is all a load of PC garbage, but it is acurate.

And there is nothing wrong with lady killer....

BTW - Regarding race, I'm going to guess that you're stuck with a Caucasian father, regardless of the race you choose?

Well peetey like to dig himself 6 feet under and pile the dirt on top, he feels safe there.

And I believe any game that doesn't let you customize at least 8 layers of unnecessary visual characteristics get laughed right out of E3.

So if I go to europe they call all the black people there africans or african americans? If I go to canada they call all the blacks there africans or african americans?

I like to believe that ignorance leads to more ignorance and try to correct it whenever I can.

There are actually a lot of black americans who just simply want to be called black. The only people who use the term african american to define themselves are the people who are abnormally defensive about anything that might even hint of racism.

"Why does the Black Hole have to be black?"

Now you're stretching this very thin, Czecho-Slovakian, dakuje :P

It just stands out funnily, now cut it out before this devolves into an Obama thread.

They described the father as having similar features upon unmasking, so I guess he may be black or yellow as well. Who cares what race he has, it's Liam Neeson!

Im not sure, but I have a vague recollection of hearing something long ago about your fathers face having similar traits as the ones you picked in character creation. So if they dont botch it, yer papa is gonna be whatever you choose, or, hes gonna be caucasian with African features.
