According to the Game of the Year Picks blog, whose five year mission is apparently to list Game of the Year awards in a pink colour scheme, Fallout 3 comes out the clear winner of last year's struggle. It has so far received 44 GotY awards from various respectable sites, with another one pending, and this is more than runners-up GTA IV and LBP combined. It should perhaps be noted that reader vote awards have been counted along with staff awards. Also, pink.

Pretty unexpected to me. I expected GTA to win more GOTYs.

So did I. But threethings work against GTA IV:

1. It was overhyped, like any mainstream game, but unlike titles like BioShock or Fallout 3, it was released so long ago that the hype has gone full circle and turned into backlash hate by now. The game's not as good as the hype, it's not as bad as the backlash, but it is what it is.

2. No DLCs. Odd, isn't it? But that's how the mainstream mindset works now, GTA IV hasn't kept itself in people's minds.

2. The PC port was absolute crap.

From what I've played (I played GTA IV PC, crap port, great game), GTA IV should've won. It's not game of the year, that's a tie between World of Goo and King's Bounty: The Legend, but it's the best mainstream game (that I played, which obv excludes the likes of LittleBigPlanet)

It was the best mainstream game offered in 2008 just judging from the general response of the media so being a clear GOTY is just a logical conclusion of it all

As such the game already has a far broader impact as its prequels hence the future of the franchise is guaranteed

No.

Check the to rated games at metacritic.

GTA IV and Gears of War 2 rated higher on the Xbox 360. Fallout 3 didn't even make the top on PS3. The only platform Fallout 3 got tops in was PC, and that was due to lack of competition, the rest of the top 5 consisting of Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Grand Theft Auto IV and World of Goo.

Fallout 3 was not the #1 critically received game. With ease, that was GTA IV: 98/100 on Xbox 360, 98/100 on PS3, compared to 93 and 91 for Fallout 3.

Essentially, the journos are calling themselves liars by doing this 180.

Note that even with it now up to 45 GotY awards, that is not the majority of GotY awards given. 45 / 131 = 34%. It is true though that the spread between the winner and the runner-ups is a bit higher this year. However if you look back at some of this year's and previous years' GotY recipients it is fairly apparent that neither the most deep nor the most innovative titles get the most GotY awards - Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Katamari Damacy, and the Witcher only received a smattering of GotY awards. Portal got quite a few awards last year, but that is more of the exception.

The bottom line is that most GotY awards are given to action games or with Bethesda action RPGs (does Knights of the Old Republic count as an action RPG?). Other genre's hardly register - even with the ultra-popular Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises. Instead of comparing GotY awards to Year's Best Picture Oscar, we should compare it to the MTV awards' Best Action Movie. Sure the winners are usually mildly innovative, but it's more about having good graphics and playing well (if stupidly in the case of FO3).

The game industry is dead apparently. Everything is FPS or action first person RPG? Strategy games are in a pretty bad shape, the best one is Sins of a Solar Empire, with has no campaign!

This GotY's are totally meaningless anyway. Just take a look on the competition of Fallout 3 had in the last 2 years. If some healthy athlete won gold in the para olympics is it then well deserved? (I know some are almost or as good like usual athletes, but its just to make some point).

I mean it could be only my feeling but yea ... it seems the PC (or gaming as whole) has droped in some black hole.

Particularly for someone that really likes to play deep RPGs.

GTA4 was game of the year for me, though on 360. Did hear the PC port was pretty terrible.

That said, I only played 3 2008 games. GTA4, Fallout 3, and C&C3 Kane's Wrath. Pretty much everything else I was interested in I didn't buy due to DRM.

King's Bounty: the Legend was this year's best game for me personally. FO3 doesn't even enter my top 5 for this year. I would put X3:TC (basically a modded 2006 game), World of Goo, and even GTA IV PC (shit performance and all) above it.
