Fallout 3 won't be Morrowind-with-guns

I've been laughing at that thread all week. I think the best part is that korodullin twit who's said all kinds of things about me like:

  • Saint_Proverbius has been active in the Fallout community for over five years. Eh? I didn't sign on to help out with(and basically run) Vault13.net until 2001. Three and a half years, basically.
  • Saint_Proverbius got DAC kicked off GameSpy because of his attitude. Eh eh? I didn't start working on DAC until after Vault13.net went down, and Vault13.net covered DAC quitting from GameSpy. DAC was never kicked off, DAC didn't like GameSpy censoring the news posts, so they(Kreegle and Killian) told Silverdawn they quit.
  • I sure would like to lick the hair off Saint_Proverbius' balls, because I've had a crush on him for years. He's dreamy. You scary boy, you.

Okay, well, maybe he didn't say the last one, but he's brought me up a number of times in that thread, and he's never actually right about anything I've done or said. He's got some kind of unhealthy fixation on me for some reason.

Come on tho, Saint. Anyone who has ever been active in the Fallout community wants to lick your balls, it's just there aren't many comfortable saying it.

I’ve been reading through NMA News for some time, be never the forums. Now I’ve read through some of the hot topics. I would like to express my opinions on some of the matters.

1) Someone mentioned that there haven’t been any good games in ISO perspective. Guess they haven’t heard of WARCRAFT3, SIMCITY4, lmao, how on earth would you build your city in FP view?, It would be possible I guess but with so much frustration, and would have to have lots more detail that it wouldn’t run on today’s top systems, and people wouldn’t really bother with it. Its just like I can’t imagine F3 in FP view, being PROPERLY done. Without ISO F3 is not a PROPER successor to F1/2. Sure it can be done, but I haven’t played any game that came close to having at least GOOD TB combat in FP view. As someone mentioned, Wizardry 8 came close to being GOOD. F1/2 had EXELENT TB combat. Fallout Tactics tried Real-time combat in an ISO view. Guess what, It was total shit. Yes you could do a few first levels, but later on when it became more “interesting” you were pretty screwed, there was no fun, no Tactics, hardly any character control (god save the people using 6 characters at once in RT) and pretty impossible unless you saved often. Now I’m sure that someone finished it that way, but that would have to be maybe 0.001% of all the people that played FT. And I don’t see why you would want to really, being a game that was a letdown. Anyway, a recent release SACRED has ISO, and is selling well. But I guess that some kiddies can’t get their poor minds past FPS.

2) I must say that I am a small Fan of Bethseda. When I hear that name I think of 3 things, Daggerfall, Morrowind but also something less appealing. I loved playing Daggerfall. It was a game of its time to me, and a lot of good ideas have been passed onto Morrowind and the expansions(I’m not going to go into how boring the combat is, the quests are and most of the world it self, but it has a lot of appealing things, that kept me going till the end, rushed of course because the side quest usually aren’t worth jack) . Bethseda can make good games for “what it is that we do best“. There is ONE MAJOR problem with its games that stop it being anything better than good games, and that is BUGS!!!. I haven’t heard anyone mention anything about that yet here. As stated above I haven’t read the whole forums.

Anyone remembers that you COULD NOT finish Daggerfall without Patches that were released later on? It wasn’t recommended to be played by ALL 3 of the gaming magazines in my Country until a few months later when they got rid of a lot of bugs and made IT POSSIBLE TO FINISH. Morrowind seems to follow with its bugs, but the most annoying is frequent crashes to the desktop. On average every 45 mins for me, and that is with both expansions and Bloodmoon patch 1.6.1820. This does not only happen to me, but a MAJORITY of all people playing this game. To some more frequent, to some less. This is what I fear, even if F3 would be made as a TRUE successor to F1/2, with ISO, TB, SPECIAL (omg, omg ,omg I cant belive some people say that Fallout and Morrowind have a very simular “SPECIAL” system, that’s like saying all mammals are nearly the same because they are warm blooded), Dialog trees, huge free to explore world (one thing that “it is that we do best“) and humor.

But in todays games there is not much honor put in, Its all about the least effort with the biggest possible money return. I Fear that I will never be up for 2 whole days and nights playing F2, totally immersed in the fantastic game.

I was more comfortable when the F3 license still had IP, there was a chance that some Dev team that knew and DO what they do best, would buy it and CONTINUE and FINISH VB. There was that medium % due to IP’s financial status, but now that Bethseda have it, it is gone. Even being a Bethseda fan, when looking into this matter, I do not belive they will even come close to Fallout Tactics.

I apologies for my bad grammar. English is not my native language.

edit: changed ppl to people, sorry about that.

With you there IMissLark....althouigh I didn't finish for until three years after release. I couldn't get passed the electric locked door field room at the end...it sucked. But one time I loaded it up and managed to pick a door and I was all set.

I rarely ran into problems with Fallout, for the most part it was crash free. Fallout 2 on the other hand, even after every single patch, is unstable at best and it's just a fucking nightmare if you want to box or streetfight in San Francisco, it's just going to fuck you like a bitch. Save early and often, never go caravaning, take critical chance boosts, or use long distance sniper, gauss, or laser rifles, and you otta be fine.

Maybe.

If you get lucky.

And in multiple slots :). I remember getting to san fran and saving during one of the ring fights. Every time I loaded my game after that it crashed :-\. If only I saved just before that, woulda saved a lot of time. But oh well, gave me the opportunity to replay again :-D. But aye, I'm off topic... sorry.

I had no problems with Fallout, only minor glitches under Win2k even. EXCEPT, for some reason, whenever I try to go on a killing spree and kill everyone, the game is corrupt after I save. It's like it's on purpose. :wtf:

Um, I almost never have any crash problems unless I use a mod.

Thats not a bug, its a puzzle. It's possible to get thru, just open the doors (via the consoles in each chamber) intil you get thru.

If you still cant figure it out, read Per's walkthru, which gives the answer of the puzzle if I recall right, only having glanced over the walkthru once to see if I had missed anything.

Yes, I too am surprised. I never had any problems, only got the car trunk bug stuck at Vault 13, and the large size of savegames in the earler versions of F2, but that wasnt a bug. Other then that it was smooth playing.

Daggerfall+Morrowind have the most bugs I've ever seen, only to be just now beaten by Sacred.

What a lot of Bethseda fans don't realize IMO is that IF and most likely Bethseda will develope F3 from scratch, there will not be much if any activity around possible Morrowind2/Daggerfall2 or anything simular. Being a Bethseda fan and a BIS/Fallout fan I feel/fear I have been struck by lighning twice in one day. It will be a very long time for any future M2/D2 to be made, and lost hope in a truely good F3 being developed.

Now my only hope in seeing a good game is HL2, and maybe a few Russian projects. Seems the gaming selection of at least good games IMO is getting thinner and thinner. I don't think I want to see what the year 2010 will be like with Quality gaming.

Try playing Neverwinter Nights out of the box. You'll be amazed. Specially if you look at the reception it got, including Best Programming awards

Role Player is right on that, quite amazing really...

Still Fallout2 was indeed buggier than even Morrowind, although this last one crashed on me more times, and i only played a litlle bit. I don`t get the Fallout1 reference though, besides the complaints with the loading times when it was released it really didn`t have much bugs.

Thats quite true. Fallout 2 had many bugs, but amazingly, never once crashed during my playtroughs. Morrowind, however, crashed very often; specially when in combat against multiple foes.

Hell, The Sims, one of the biggest selling games ever, was isometric. The Sims 2 will be isometric. The entire RTS genre is isometric, with the exception of the odd ones like BattleZone and Dark Ore. Most turn baed strategy games are isometric, like the Civilization series. Nearly all Tycoon games are isometric, and Rollercoaster Tycoon made a bundle. ToEE was turn based and isometric, and it was Atari's 3rd best selling PC game last year behind UT2004 and Enter the Matrix.

The idea that isometric is obsolete is completely ludicrious. People who say that are completely out of touch with reality.

As someone mentioned, Wizardry 8 came close to being GOOD.

Yeah, but the combat sucked. If it had been isometric, there would have been movement based tactics allowed rather than your party being lashed together in the silly fashion it was. It felt more like you were just one entity with hit locations rather than being a party. If Elfy Bob and Wizard Jim are in the back, and a monster creeps up from behind, they take the damage - just like you can't hit the front center torso armor from behind in Battletech.

(god save the people using 6 characters at once in RT)

It's actually pretty easy in FOT's real time. Just make sure no one is using a burst weapon, put them all on aggressive, and march them around the map until you win. In fact, it's boring.

I'm looking forward to Doom 3. The PC Gamer review said it's over 20 hours long, which, if true, will be great given how short recent FPS titles are.

According to CNN it's going to be released next month.

Also, in case you've missed it, there's something in my .sig you might be interested in.

I was just asking myself why so many people are sending PMs about my sign. Here is the answer. Some people here do not read the whole post or didn't noticed that this quote is not right. I didn't said that but Rosh said. So some noobs read that, look for my avatar, check my sign, read the small message and sent a PM to me to complain about that. And they don't want to be killed!!!

Dude, PM him next time ok. Saint, there is something really weird going on with you. I think all this time involved in the fallout scene is affecting your sexu--- err... your sense of reality. Anyway I don't think that's the right place to talk about it. It's going to attract all types of trollers to this topic.

We're not worried about bugs, I mean, come on, we played Fallout 2. It can't get any buggier.

Daggerfall that was already mentioned. Ultima IX hits a new level of bugs, making the game almost impossible to finish.

I agree with you. Best mode for fallout. There are tons of games with that perspective that makes millions of caps . And there is a tradition on that mode too. I would love to see SPECIAL and TB too. At least they could make fallout 3 with an optional turn based mode.

Do you know how many copies ToEE actually sold? Troika seems to be unwilling to cough up the numbers.

well I think we should all assume that SPECIAL will be changed. In my mind I see KOTOR when I think about how Bethesda might approach this game. I think everyone should be open to this scenario.

Guess what, video games are expensive to make. They're stressful to make; and MOST importantly they're risky business. The fact that somehow the grace of god has come down and taken this game which we all love and handed it to a capable studio should, in itself, be enough to satisfy everyone on this board.

Bethesda is not a crap company and they're going to want to put their mark on this title. Expect changes. HOWEVER. You should also expect the finest Fallout game you've seen since Fallout 2. This game WILL be an improvement over Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel.

"But those games totally sucked!"

Yep, and I'd be willing to bet that the people at Bethesda feel the exact same way. They wouldn't go out of their way to buy a failing title unless they felt very passionate about the game itself and what they believe they can do for the franchise.

And seriously think about what they can do for the franchise.

Polygon counts are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
This means a vivid, 3d Wasteland.
and it'll be a BIG wasteland!

Consider, if you will, travelling on foot (much like in Morrowind) through the wasteland. Am I the only one who thinks that shit seems really fucking cool? The possibility for innovation in a world like that is limitless!

The most important thing in the video game industry, as in any entertainment industry, is innovation. Without Bethesda our game would be either dead or quite possibly in the hands of some less qualified studio. Now they're going to take their shot at dusting it off, and overhauling the entire thing. I'm fucking excited!
