fallout gameplay questions

ugh, i'm having serious problems:

1. i can sneak to the elevator that should take me to the surface, but there is a force-field in the way, and i don't know how to disable it...i tried using plastic explosives and i tried repairing it (it said it was too damaged to repair)

2. i made the very stupid mistake of saving over the saves i had of before i went to the military base...now it looks like i'm going to have to either play trial-and-error until i can get out of here, or start over from the beginning :(.

3. i'm now trying to kill both the guards near the elevator with one plastic explosive, but trying to time it correctly is driving me insane! can anyone tell me how time is calculated in fallout? for example, does time pass when i'm looking through my inventory, or when i'm trying to decide where to move? do timed explosives have a proximity detonator as well? i'm finding that i can successfully blow up one of the guards, but not both at the same time!

4. also, does anyone know if there are any shortcuts in fallout, or where i could find a list of them? clicking through menus takes a lot of time when you're racing against the clock...

F1 - gives you a list shortcut keys

in dialog menus - use 1-9 to pick an option, 1 being the first item in a dialog choice

cool, thanks for the info, its really useful!

anyway, it looks like when the ultramutant in black armor moves to the space on which the bomb is placed, the bomb just disappears and never detonates! does anyone know what might be causing this?

edit:
wow, i was able to kill the guard by putting the explosive on the space adjacent to the spot where he always moved, but when he died from the explosion, he just stayed in the upright position, and it looked like he was still alive!

edit2: i've finally killed all the guards and gotten my equipment back!!!!! that took WAY too long...but now i'm facing the same problem: how do i disable the forcefield in front of the elevator?

edit3: does the "one handed" trait consider rifles a 2 handed weapon?

Be warned, since I have not playrf Fallout (1) in so long and not as much this info is not reliable at best.

IIRC the four ways to disable are
1.Using repair on it which would disable it temp, but enough time so you can run through. Though if you fail three times something bad happens either the alarm is set off, or something.
2.Using explosives to disable the emitter shutting it off perm.
3.If you have a radio then you should be able to use it on the emitter part and be able to toggle it on or off.
4.There should be a comp on the first lvl of the base toward in the corridor of the comp I believe or nearby and if you have a high science you can hack it to turn off all force fields.

Hope I can help, Peace

i believe you can only disable force fields that are yellow, the red ones, you cannot, but you can pass thru them (but you take damage) - IIRC

the problem is that its red but i get killed every time i try to go through it!

what level are you? and what armor do you have? (i do believe it makes a little difference)

i'm level 6, and now that i think about it, i was wairing only robes and probably had low health when i tried to run through. the only problem is, fallout crashed, and now when i try to run it it says i don't have enough hard disk space, while the drive that fallout is on has 22gb free!

level 6, eh? your character really has no business being at that location... as far as armor goes, you should have at least combat armor when entering that location

basically, in my opinion, you are there WAY to early :)

trust me, if i could revert back to an old savegame, i would! (i'm such an idiot for saving over it! :x). luckily i do have combat armor (thats the $9000 one, right?), and i can kick some serious ass with my sniper rifle and assault rifle (well, not that much ass, but i can hold my own 8)). the problem i was having before was that i didn't have any of my gear, so i died very easily. now the problem i'm having is that fallout won't start up!!!

if you are running XP, try right clicking the app, select "properties", go to the compatability tab, and choose to run in Win98/ME mode.... then try starting the fallout and see if it helps

if you are not running in XP, or have already done this... oops :(

thanks for the tip, but i was actually already using compatibility mode. i was, however, able to find a solution by searching the forum! here's the thread if you're interested...

edit:
i just tried it again, and i was able to run through the force field!!! it looks like i'm finally gonna get out of this hell-hole!!!!!

edit2:
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
god damn, i was ready to give up so many times!!!!!!!!
unfortunately it looks like my dog didn't make it, he must've been fried by a forcefield when i wasn't paying attention, and i had to leave my buddies behind (they were getting fried by the forcefield as well). no matter, i'll go back for them when i'm stronger...

but seriously, that was probably the most intense thing i've ever done in a videogame; not just because it was hard, but because the WHOLE time i had NO IDEA whether i would actually make it out or not. for all i knew, there would be some insurmountable obstacle up around the corner. and there were times when i honestly thought there was no way i could go further (like when my buddies were all on the verge of dieing, i had only 4 shots left in my pistol, and there were 4 guards right in front of the elevator). but i made it through using some insanely cool (although also insanely frustrating) ideas. jesus christ, i've never played a game where something like this has happened! i think the reason it is so much cooler than in other games is because in other games you know that if you are in a certain area, you have "led" there by the designers, and that you must be able to move on, because the game is pretty much scripted from start to finish; but in this game, there is no scripting, so you have to watch your own ass! the game pretty much forces you to think, to be tactical, and to be wary...awesome...just awesome...

yah awsome game... when I got captured there was an error and instead of all my stuff going into the locker in the room, it all just disapeared. Try fighting all the super mutants with a 10mm pistol and a lazer rifle, the latter of which sucks. But good job at getting out of there at level 6. Dogmeat almost always dies at the military base, he just can resist walking through those force fields... over and over again. Its like he's playing some demented dog game.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Fallout.

Shame about Dogmeat. Mourn him a bit after you're safe.

new question!

while i've been playing fallout, my biggest source of income has been the stuff that my enemies drop. up until now, i would just match up the amount of money they had with the value of my stuff, and everything would be fine.

now, however, i'm running into a problem; when i line up the values, the person i'm bartering with tells me that the deal isn't good enough! why is this suddenly happening?

Some items even though they have values, merchents wont trade for (Gieger counter for some reasons) A few items are that annoying, can't rember them though.

ah, that must've been it; one of the things i was trying to trade away was the geiger counter...thanks for the help!

new questions!

for some reason, the bars that tell you that you are in sneak mode or that you have gained a level aren't showing up for me anymore! has anyone else ever had this problem? how can i fix it?

also, does anyone know exactly what the explorer perk does?

thanks!

edit: my sneak/level bars started working again, idk why... :?:
