Fallout 2 mod Fallout: Nevada (extended)

I know no Russian and no programming, but I'm a professional editor in English (also, I played the mod all the way through on your last version and loved it).

First of all, a huge thanks to the translators for making Nevada playable. This mod is an incredible accomplishment and testament to the cult following the classic Fallout titles still deserve. I wanted to give my 2 cents on the recently released translation, since I feel like a lot of the immersion is lost as I/others run into major dialogue errors.

I'll edit this post as I find more major issues. I'm only an hour or so into the game so far. The mod could definitely could use some seasoned English editors to comb through some of the rough patches. Sorry I don't have much initial feedback to offer.

1. Mr. Chase and Bertolini have some painfully flawed dialogue (New Reno). The conversations between both are consistently odd and confusing.
Dialogue Example (Mr. Chase): http://imgur.com/a/FQGRT
2. Jay's Message (Pip Boy) displays in Russian
3. Larry Geller in Las Vegas Dead Hotel displays Russian convo options.
4. Salt Lake City Underground Communications - Switch near terminal displays Russian text
5. Salt Lake City Ghetto (Family Shelter below ground) - Trapped Man's note is in Russian
6. Broken Diligence (caravan attack site) - Encrypted Holodisc is in Russian

We have an excellent American editor Snikers, but he is just one guy, the project does need many editors but it also needs editors that are Fallout fans and know how Fallout dialog works and is presented. A lot of immersion is lost true, but nothing can be done in one day, quality comes in time. So we will edit the text and fix all errors as playerbase reports issues. It's a huge mod we could never fix enough before releasing.

I downloaded the latest patch and did everything as described. Nothing has changend, can't change the resolution. It might be interesting that I also can't change the resolution in the Vanilla FoN.

That's odd. Pyran worked for two days to fix the issue, and we tested it before and it ran excellent.
Can you explain what you do step by step, but in another thread http://www.nma-fallout.com/threads/fallout-nevada-bugs-and-errors-report.214138/ that is for error reports. This thread is for all progress report and other info.

I was laughing my ass off at some of the dialogue translation, I try to pretend the npc is retarded or because of the apocalypse was never educated. I'm having a lot of fun though, great work from the team, you guys are awesome for making this game. And also the translators for doing the best they can with limited resources.

What you can do (I did) is go to the official (russian) fallout Nevada site, enable Bing translation (or any other translation program), navigate to the russian faq (it contains a description of quests), translate it through bing/google and save it on your computer.

it's a very rough automatic translation, but look at it as a challenge, it adds to the experience :)

Ah ill do that then, thanks for the good idea.

I will take that as a compliment :silly:, sorry we never said we are excellent writers or translators, we were just people that were ready to get shit done, the translation is made for purpose of American editors to understand what they edit and for everyone at least to experience the mod for early versions of translation.
To be honest I feel like my work as a translation project director is done, and I should pass all responsibility to a reliable editor like Snikers that already runs all the editing.

I'm in middle of New Vages at the moment. The game is tough and stuffed with quests. I like it. I actually felt lost at the start, the game world was too huge since quests require you to find certain npc's cross multiple towns. Good stuff. The Military Base was sweet. Killing robot with electricity and evading turrets through roof was really fun.

Does editing the files take any previous experience? If so I can help out I'm a native English speaker.

Yes you have to be preferably an American and skilled editor that is used working for hours on boring text, you have to explore the quests you try to edit, compare and correct all the names and stuff, you have to know the mod itself pretty well in lore and story, and you have to play all the previous classic fallout games...
But don't let that discourage you contact Snikers he may find something more simple for you to edit, but don't even bother if you gonna take the files and then won't respond or disappear, you just will end up wasting yours and everybody's time.

Hey guys! I've messed something up regarding Striker and I'm unable to talk to him about certain quest, since everyone is immediately starting to shoot at me? Is there any possible fix to that (even through Fallout 2 Save Editor) or do I have to face more than 5 armed guys?

Okay then I probably won't since I'm still trying to figure out how to install the translation, thank you for the information though.

On the front page, it says the English translation is finished? I wish I could have helped out before you guys finished the job but I've been very busy lately.

Hi, I've been playing Fallout 1 & 2 since 1999 (with some breaks of course), but now I registered here just because of your recent release. I assume Dionis is the current manager of the project, so this post is for him.

First thing is a help offer. I noticed installers (both for the game and the translation patch) have Russian GUI (why?). I understand you aim for a all-in-one, bilingual installer. And here is where I can provide you with quality Inno Setup script, that will take care of installation, language choices, source files extraction and ddraw.ini manipulation. You will only compile it into final package. Let me know if you are interested.

Second is a voice of concern. Don't get me wrong, the mod is fantastic, but unlike others (Sfall, Resurrection, etc), it is STANDALONE - it contains multiple copies of Fallout 2 executable, which puts it in warez category rather than just mods. Even worse, it is available for download from this site, which makes it complicit and puts whoever downloads it at risk of criminal prosecution. Seriously, copyright trolls never sleep. It would be best if the mod was just an overwrite of a humongous installation. Fallout2.exe is the only thing that makes the difference. This way you could shrink it's size (no more critters.dat and common stuff from master.dat) and also post it on ModDB, along with Resurrection, where it would reach bigger audience. Those who are interested in the mod already own the game, anyway.

I also found some few bugs. Will post them in the other thread.

Ok you got me officially worried about that copyright stuff, but the game is released in 2015 and no issues, copyright rules were in order. I don't know what the file names have to do with it. You mean I should shut down the link? And just stop all the error hunting we do right now? I will contact the mod developer right now to see if it's true and if they took precautions.
No English installer is needed right now because the project is not finished, the translation is, but there is still editing and tons of stuff to do, small size updates are essential, to fix something and update once in a while.
Pyran handles all our installer business, he did all this stuff for years on the mod and now he does everything for translation patches, but I will contact you if we need your help.
About moving the mod somewhere... sure download the mod and upload it wherever you want, but we started at NMA, had all our support here, finished this in record time and now people here and everyone else that is interested can enjoy it, it would be a shame to take it all away from this site, I would faster delete my Gmail account than leaving NMA. And no not everyone interested have the mod, there are many fans still unaware of it.
We found so many bugs my head is going to explode, there are a lot of issues, and we try to fix them all.

I mean that Fallout 2 game = Fallout2 executable. Modding in general has unregulated legal status, but no company will allow anyone sharing their programs without license. There are reasons why all other projects dance around this issue. For example, Sfall patches the memory areas rather than distributes the exe. This is just a good, well-established practice.

I'm not ordering you to do anything - it's just a warning. Remember, you go international now, so you will have international eyes on you. I'm not going to rat you out, but don't be surprised if someone receives a C&D letter because of this someday. In my opinion, the final version (after translation is finished) should simply not contain the game exe. You can delete it now as well - just ship all needed utilities (hi-res patch, etc) with the mod.

What I meant with fans is that those who are going to be interested in the mod probably already have their legal Fallout 2 copy. I don't think someone who never played it will suddenly feel an urge to play. But if they will (hopefully), then they should buy the game, not get a pirated one. It's $5 or something on GOG.

Installer: yes, I mean after the project is finished. Just send me a PM. Though I will not help you if you aren't going to resolve the above issue. This is serious matter - don't hand-wave it.

Moving: I'm not going to take your stuff, just suggesting you guys can post it later in multiple, also-well-know locations, in addition to NMA. This is purely optional, of course.

Ok I'll remove the link and see what we have to do next. I don't want to put the site or our members in danger. Dammit we don't need this right now....

I don't think we have to do anything complicated. If we just remove Fallout2.exe from the download, then everything should be fine.

We'll have to keep master.dat and critters.dat, as both of those have been changed.

I hope it's nothing complicated Snikers, we have enough things to worry about right now.
