Fallout of Nevada

Hello all

I am a native Russian speaker and I've been living in the US for last 10 years, so my English is fairly good. I also have played F1-2 a lot (I've completed each game at least 10-20 times) in the past so I know the original games through and through.

I'm willing to put in the hours, but I'm going to need the decently formatted text in Russian (I don't know how to extract the text from the game in a manageable form).

Send what you have. A Word or rtf file would be preferred. My email is predeus at gmail dot com

That's a good news!

The text files can be found in the master.dat\text\english folder.
Here is the link to download the mod :
http://fallout-nevada.ucoz.ru/index/fontec/0-5

The text files come in 2 format : .txt and .msg. Both of which can be easily edited with the notepad. The .txt files don't need special precaution but the .msg files have some brackets ({}) that you need to very careful of : don't remove them and don't add a "space" between a word and a bracket or the game will display an error message.

There were few patch after the release of the mod, so I took the opportunity to compile the whole thing in one archive :
http://www.mediafire.com/?f93a1d0bjs5w85d

For the record, I took the text folder from the original mod then add
the patch in that order :
patch 0.99a
fix1 > fix5

I hope I compiled the files in the right order....

Well first we need to agree on names, items and locations (see that little flame war about Wind of War). Google has fine feature sharing documents between users, so I would start with that.

Then we need to ask Alexander a few things:

1.) which text files did he use from original F2 (might save some time - no need to translate skills, perks, scenery and other stuff)
2.) if he could provide his ingame fonts
3.) about artwork - most of them are luckily in english, but I was wondering about readme pdf, loading screens and other stuff
4.) since he's right now deciding the fate of the mod and votes on both options are pretty even, I think we should wait until he makes his final move. That means we will not have to translate the game again.
5.) + other stuff I'll think of :)

To Deus: I was looking for some fine editor for translating and I found Notepad++ a good choice, since you can have opened two files at the one screen. But feel free to use anyone you like of course :)

It would be great if you could do some translation of the Mod Deus! But maybe you should start with something smaller first? I bett there are some small russian mod that could be translated first. Just my 2 cent. Do whatever you like ofcourse :)

This is important, half of the dialogue files are the original, but the modders have used the original names, so it's impossible to tell the difference until you open them...so getting the original files will save a lot of time.

2.) if he could provide his ingame fonts

Just replace any fonts with the originals, there shouldn't be any problems here.

3.) about artwork - most of them are luckily in english, but I was wondering about readme pdf, loading screens and other stuff.

I've replaced all of the Russian artworks with the originals / new interfaces. There was just one or two towns that are still in Russian, I can adjust those very easily when I get a proper translation. An English "readme" pdf and loading screens would be helpful.

4.) since he's right now deciding the fate of the mod and votes on both options are pretty even, I think we should wait until he makes his final move. That means we will not have to translate the game again.

I think we should go ahead, any future change would involve very few files, the vast majority will remain the same, and any translation shouldn't effect the maps or scripts.

Well I'm a 30yr old science worker and I do have quite a few other engagements at this time :) This mode is special in a way that it's reasonably complete and also has a lot of effort put into it.

So I figured I can do this in my spare time. I'm pretty well experienced with translation so I don't think I'll need too much warmup :) I only hope I won't lose the momentum and bring it to completion fast.

Yay! Thank you :)

Well, let's wait till it's done :)

I have an issue and whoever else is interested in getting the translation done is more than welcome to help me. The dialogues and description files from the mod are mixed with the original ones. I'm not sure what to do here, but I'm certain that I don't want to translate original text (that was translated from English in the first place).

If someone would create a list of files that need to be translated in each directory (or at least give me the original un-modded directory, I think I can write a script to look for the differences), that would be a great help.

Let me know what you think.

We need someone to contact the original maker to pass the Russian dialogue files.

The files are here: FON Translation All ...just use them as a reference (these are the broken English versions), it will help you to separate them from the original text files.

I used this tool to help translate the Fallout text files into the proper Russian text. CYRCON: Latinitza & Cyrillic Converter - http://www.benya.com/cyrillic/cyrcon/

Meanwhile, I've estimated the amount of work and it seems hard, but doable. I hope to get most of the work done in January, if everything will go as expected.

A little PR for our English-speaking community ;) You DEFINITELY want to get this one.

The mod is essentially big enough and different enough to be Fallout 3 we all waited for after F2. The amount of work done by the author is ASTOUNDING. He really should consider a job as a game designer, for he is certainly very talented... And very, very persistent.

The game has original (albeit not comprehensive) soundtrack, multiple (and quite well done) movies, and truly interesting and rewarding quests. A lot of scripted action that actually works. There are also people reverse engineering the engine to fix broken perks, add new ones, change game dates, allow people to play for more than 13 years and much, much more.

I think the goal I am looking forward to is to incorporate proper English translation into version 1.00. Version 0.99b (stable beta) is expected quite soon. What I would like to do is publish my translation of 0.99b, then de-bug and polish it with the help of the community, and finally, incorporate a final version into 1.00.

I also plan to (eventually...) translate the walk-through that is in the works right now, and also make a brief English manual.

Deus:

I found many text files which are from Fallout 2, so be careful and do not translate them (if they are about Arroyo, Chosen One etc.), since it's pretty much useless.

I am translating the game into the czech languange, since well, my english is kinda dull. But right now I've got some dilemma: should I translate Страйкер as Stryker or Striker? Both seems good but Striker is better I guess.

Edit: I've created a Google doc file for names and their czech/english translation and suggestions. More work to come.

hey

you can translate it as "honest driver". Desription: "You are a legend of local highways. Men are jealous of you, women are crazy about you, and kids keep asking for a ride in your pickup truck."

so you do get the title if you get the car LEGALLY, e.g. if you buy it.

if you steal it, the trait is called "лихой угонщик" - something like a "daring car thief".

Thanks Deus, that means another file translated. Unless there will be major changes there in following patch. Would be nice to have it patched already to 1.00 so that you will know you won't have to translate some stuff again.

1000 lines of russian patch notes?! Man, that's some serious reading in any language... but some changes look awesome!

anyway...

Alexander told me he edited half of the dialogue files, which means 300 - 400 files. So there is no reason why to bother translate anything before he releases 0.99b patch (soon).

I will meanwhile gather arts, movies and loading screen that needs to be translated. Not sure if there's any scenery that is in Cyrillic (I guess not, but better to check).

Grand theft auto

yeah I actually thought it would be a good translation! except it's a name of a felony charge rather then a description of a person.

well, it's doesn't have to be that. I think I'll call the perk "grand theft auto" in the translation, I like it.
